Or worship Kiku, cast necromancy spells and hit things till they die, maybe.

Ghoul Monks have been the class I have been able to descend the furthest with, yet I still can't seem to get very far.

Plus the "That rotting meat was DELICIOUS" message makes me SMILE. SUCH AN ADORABLE GHOUL.

I say Makhleb. Oddly enough, undead don't make the best necromancers. Too many of their best spells require a metabolism.

Plenty of necromancy spells are great for Ghouls - regeneration, agony, corpse rot, dispel undead, sublimation. Kiku's corpse invocation also means you'll never have rot issues!

Should I just keep meleeing stuff forever or perhaps train up a branch of magic so I can get a few utility spells for when I'm in a tight spot?

With Vehumet, you're missing out on the god's benefits if you are not casting conjuration spells. Get magic dart or throw flame / frost or something and start blasting away. A few utility spells are always a good idea too if you can get them.

Okawaru might even be nice. Might is the bomb and Haste might be useful in major battles. After the early game you wont need to eat as many corpses so you can sac them. Weapon gifts are wasted but armour gifts are always nice.

They are gone, but don't cry - Heroism is not quite as big a buff, but it is also very useful. Unlike Might, it can stack with berserk rage, which makes for a very powerful combo.

And Finesse is like Haste. Except Haste has been nerfed to only 1.5x speed, while Finesse is still 2x speed, though it no longer applies to movement.

I went zig raiding with a ghoul monk who was rocking PDA and casting spells for the glory of kiku even with only 9 int.
Too bad he was dispelled in hell by shadow fiends. :(
But yeah +1 for monks of okie, spam heroism all the time because other okie is going to be gifting you +0 gloves forever (which you should have for hydras though) and rock dragon armor.

What exactly is heroism? I've never played trunk.
And doesn't heavy armour like Dragon Armour cripple your Unarmed Combat?

Heroism adds +5 to all your melee / ranged skill levels, which makes it pretty amazing with unarmed.

Armour does affect unarmed combat speed, but talk of it crippling it, or being unwearable is just a myth. Dragon armours are pretty light anyways.

That refers to Fighting and Unarmed Combat skill right? Also, if you're already at level 27 in those skills, does it go up to 32? Or is it capped at 27?

It's capped at 27, and applies to all non-magic/invocation/evocation skills.
