Abyss Exit Portal

Does going deeper into the Abyss increase the likelihood of finding an exit portal?

I know that it makes the enemies harder and increases the likelihood of spawning the rune, but I was sent here through distortion and I'm only interested in leaving right now.

I've never hated this game more. A perfectly amazing Djinni Berserker with an early Vampiric Bardiche wasted to an early Abyss from a harmless Hobgoblin wielding distortion. So pissed right now.

I think this is leaving out important information. If you're just trying to escape it's basically never a good idea to go deeper- It'll just get you killed.

As seen here. (I presume. Did you go deeper, or just get unlucky on Abyss:1?)
On IRC my nick is reaverb. I play online under the name reaver, though.

Unlucky? No need to get unlucky, Abyss:1 is unsurvivable unless you are a very strong character above XL 20.

Re: Abyss Exit Portal

I've escaped with multiple characters much lower than XL20... there was some luck involved in that the exit portal appeared before something I couldn't handle... but to say its unsurvivable is a stretch.

Re: Abyss Exit Portal

I died on Abyss:3. My character was XL15 but there was no surviving what was thrown against me. I'm amazed I lasted as long as I did. Even at low 20's it wouldn't have mattered.

I know the wiki says there is only a 9.9% chance of being banished by a distortion hit but I'm pretty sure its 100% of the time. I can't remember ever blinking, teleporting or even taking added damage from a distortion hit. Its always been banishment in the moment I enter melee range.

Then perhaps you might consider Ashenzari? Ashy will warn you about distortion weapons, at which point you can take whatever precautions you need to.

Not sure about it... It is a place where you REALLY want to be careful
Looking for an abyss exit portal, my XL 14 VpEn, grabbed the rune on Abyss:4 and I didn't meant to look for it
I just went deeper and deeper to escape monsters...

While possible, It's tricky, being fast helps, flying helps (Flying over lava/water to avoid things) Regeneration helps (Actually any form of healing) Stealth helps (a LOT) Ash's passive mapping helps. I primarily dove deeper when I found a staircase, *and* was being chased by nasty stuff I wanted to get away from, staircase gave me a clean slate (If I wasn't being chased I made sure to heal to full before diving). Made sure to rest to full whenever I was *not* being chased. Avoid killing, but kill when you encounter things that will follow you and do things to you at range or move faster than you do, move away *immediately* after any combat. Walk in the opposite direction from things that haven't spotted you yet. And yes, get lucky.

I've found that once I start diving, I can often dive more and more frequently, as the staircases seem to get more popular, I typically *won't* dive unless I'm being chased by something nasty however. If I'm being chased by something I can kill, I try to "circle" to make sure an area is empty and try to kill the thing in the middle of an empty area.

At Level 10 you can kill very very few things in the abyss It's pretty hard to survive, by level 15 you should be able to kill many of the less-powerful critters but need to restrain yourself from doing so because you'll attract more traffic that way, by level 17 you can probably kill many of the harder things but again, should do so with restraint, and by level 20 or so you can probably kill the hardest things in abyss:1, but you're still in significant danger of being overwhelmed by too many critters. I find I'm usually prepared to voluntarily try to retrieve the Abyss rune somewhere around level 23-25.

It must be a general bug, my own detector is buzzing ;)
