Your first win?

As someone who has never won, I'm curious about how you got your first win - not just race/class choice, but the way you progressed your character.

The best I've done so far has been with an Orc Priest (22nd level and cleared a few mid-tier dungeons) - the character himself felt pretty weak, but I was able to get some seriously badass followers. Problem was, they were a pain to move through the dungeon (and they drowned, but that's just YASD), and that made things boring.

A few others have also gone far: Merfolk Crusader (but without followers, I'm not great with a melee heavy character because they're not that versatile), DDNe (had a string of bad luck, but this one might have legs), and DEWi (so good, so versatile, but so fragile you can't make one mistake).

I've never made it past the middle/early-late dungeon and the middle tier branches, so I'm curious on what you think my best chances of getting there to experience the later parts of the game are. I love trying different kinds of characters, but I'd like to actually see what Hell and Ziggaruts are like too!

Re: Your first win?

My one (and only) win came with a Naga Wizard, following the Conjurator guide on the wiki. Once I had Fire Storm reliable, I just blasted my way through Zot:5, retreating when MP was low. 3-rune win, of course.

I've gotten fairly comfortable getting the two Lair runes and with other characters, what happens at Vault:8 determines whether or not I'll get a chance for a win. I'm just not comfortable enough yet delving into Hell for runes.

Have come close on other occasions. Had a KoBe on Zot:5 get surrounded by Curse Toe summons with no escape.. same with a SpEn. Currently working on an OgCK that looks quite promising.

Re: Your first win?

spirggan venom mage for me.

just posted this in the character builds section...

spriggans -> Venom Mage that can kite with no buffs is a roflstomp. You can use the starter poison spell and a backup like magic dart for half the game. 5 wins with it 8-) .

As far as progression goes, turn off all skills except spellcasting until it gets to level 6 or so (mostly to make some key spells hunger-less as early as possible), then turn on poison, conjuration and any other casting skills you aquire along with dodge. Keep everything else off (like stealth, doors and traps, etc).

By the time you start seeing a lot of poision resist monsters you should have poison arrow (not what it used to be but still solid) and several others to use in that situation. Pretty easy to play really.

Re: Your first win?

My first win was with a Deep Dwarf Necromancer (v0.5). I won with them a few other times, since they're easy.

1. Find a butchering tool.
2. Spam Pain (it doesn't hurt you) and learn Vampiric Draining.
3. Keep casting until both spells are at 'Excellent'.
4. Find the temple and worship Makhleb.
5. Learn Dispel Undead and Borgnjor's Revivification.

Re: Your first win?

My first win was a MDBe - awesome creatures, those mountain dwarf berserkers, in fact, I'm playing one (my first ever since 0.5.2) to check out the armour buffs!

Funnily enough it was not one of the four times I found a crystal plate or gold dragon armour on the first seven floors. I guess those inflicted a fatal brain implosion in me, and caused me to play even more moronically. The progress was pretty simple - bump into stuff until they die. I'm really proud of it, though, because it was a five-rune win, not a petty three-rune one :P I lucked out and found the Abyss rune in my one and only journey there and then decided that hell, I might as well go splat the Royal Jelly while I was at it. I didn't even have to berserk in Zot 5, I would just find a herd of orbs and smacked them around.

Ah, the memories. I still have the dump, too. Here, I'll post it for nostalgia's sake :)

Re: Your first win?

TrBe back when resist slowing still existed. IIRC if you berserked with that amulet, you would be "exhausted" afterwards so you couldn't zerk again but you would be HASTED of all things. So I pretty much just turned on fighting, UC, and dodging, zerked repeatedly the entire game and went ham on everything.
oh but who are they to judge us
