Okawaru gifted Distortion...

Shortly after I entered the Lair, Okawaru gave me a randart battleaxe as a gift. I equipped it to see what it was, and much to my dismay, I got this:

  Code:
 B - the +7,+6 battleaxe of the Hall of Blades (weapon) {distort, Dex+3}
(Okawaru gifted it to you on level 5 of the Lair of Beasts)

The axe is stupidly powerful this early in the game, and it's letting me one-shot kill almost everything I see, and I wouldn't have a problem with using this axe if it wasn't for the fact that there are Hydras in the Lair now and I have no way of killing them. I have Axes at level 23, and I cross-trained Maces & Flails to level 15 so I would have a weapon I could use to deal with Hydras, but now I'm stuck with Axes only and I really don't want to push my luck by trying to chop a Hydra to death.

I don't want to risk getting banished this early in the game. I have a lot of high power wands (Fire, Drain) that I could use, but then I'd be out of wands (or close to it) by the time I get out of the Lair. Is there any way to safely unwield a distortion weapon, and/or are there any alternative ways to kill Hydras that I could use right now besides using up my wands?

Re: Okawaru gifted Distortion...

using the wands is fine. You can also walk away from hydras, then go upstairs and come down other stairs. You'll still get to explore most of the level.

If javelins exist those can help too. You can use wands or javelins to do some damage, and then finish it with the axe if you are concerned about saving wand charges.

Your AC is pretty good, so you can probably even axe the hydras until they get banished or horribly warped. If not now, then soon and/or with heroism.

Re: Okawaru gifted Distortion...

and I cross-trained Maces & Flails to level 15 so I would have a weapon I could use to deal with Hydras

you don't want to do this ever, btw

Re: Okawaru gifted Distortion...

All that experience could've been used in something more useful, like armour or even better - fighting. (Better because armour is already "high" up at 13, while fighting at a miserable 3.6)

you don't want to do this ever, btw

Why not? I only planned on training it to level 10, but it went up so fast, it was already at level 15 by the time I noticed. Also, I tried using Heroism on the Hydras like rchandra suggested, and much to my surprise they die easily in only two/three hits. This axe is ridiculous.

One last question, would this axe be a good weapon during mid/end game? Or should I try to find something better like an Executioner's Axe and enchant it manually?

When Crawl gives you disto, make tears in reality.

Even if hydras didn't die that fast (and yeah, they will) you'd eventually abyss 'em. You can clear the game with this axe.

Invest in rMsl/dmsl because yaktaurs will piss you off, though.

Instead of blowing a crapton of experience on a useless skill, you could deal with hydras by:

-walking away from them
-using wands on them
-just having a reasonably powerful character and using tab on them (I swear some people have never tried this)

I went from level 0 to level 15 M&F in only two floors of Lair... I really don't think it was as big of a waste of XP as you are all making it out to be...

Re: Okawaru gifted Distortion...

Because that M&F is basically only good for hydra... you need it for nothing else (and don't really need it for hydra either).

That XP could have gone into Fighting, Armour or Dodging and any of that would have been more valuable than M&F, which you may never even use again. Even some Traps or working on spells would be a better choice, since those would be valuable for more than just one enemy type in one branch.

Had that XP gone into Fighting you'd be well over 16 since you already had a bit, and have an even better apt there.

The problem is the opportunity cost - you could have spent that XP on Fighting or something else instead.
Consider it this way- If you hadn't spent the XP you could go up 10 levels in Fighting instead, but would have had to use two of your "high power wands" to defeat hydras. Isn't two wands worth 10 levels in Fighting? That's around 20 permanent HP and melee power ups for the rest of the game.

By training a useless weapon skill you're also reducing the probability of Okawaru gifting you a good weapon.

I can take out Hydrae with a vampiric handaxe. Just do it.

Re: Okawaru gifted Distortion...

While cool, I'm not sure I'd actually endorse the vampiric handaxe strategy very often. But you can just kill them with your axe/sword/whatever if that's what you've built your guy to do. And decent wands/recharging scrolls are generally not all that rare. I save most of my scrolls for haste/heal wounds/teleport wands, but I'll use a couple on fire/draining/cold if I've got a decent number and/or I haven't found the other wands yet.

Re: Okawaru gifted Distortion...

I honestly think the early fire/cold wands are expendables that you can use it on tough mobs/uniques. After I finish a game I always have 3~4 wands lying around that I've never used. It's not like you're going to use wand of draining/fire/cold on late game unless being under a very extraordinary situation.

Re: Okawaru gifted Distortion...

Not long ago I was playing Oka and using polearms, and I grabbed a handcaxe of returning to supplement when I ran out of javelins and forgot to turn the skill off for a bit. So many potential gifts were wasted.

I don't really like distortion though, too much blinking. It's annoying to me.

Granted, I was playing a Lava Orc with a regular shield, having downed a full Manual of Shields prior to Lair (I found it!) and I threw shit at every Hydra prior to engagement...

Meanwhile, I just got a red DrFE killed by unwielding a flail of distortion in Lair. I found a gate deeper into the abyss, but not so much in the way of gates out. Or even a Lugonu altar.

Distortion would be so nice if it didnt blink/teleport monsters away from you ALL THE F-ING TIME..

Second(or fourth or fifth) on wanding the hydras to death: Fire, Cold, and especially draining work wonders on them, soften them up real good then you can usually melee them in a couple hits before they end up at 27+ heads...

Re: Okawaru gifted Distortion...

Also worth considering is that instead of dumping that experience into maces & flails, you could dump it into Evocations, add > 50% to your wand damage (after factoring in accuracy and AC), and then have better wand power, a chance to ID number of wand charges on each zap, and an easier time activating other evokables for the rest of the game.

Not that Fighting is a bad choice, of course, but if you're looking to add utility or alternate attack methods, Evocations is pretty solid.

The blinking can be usefull against mosnters with nothing but melee attacks. It gives you a few more turns of throwing stuff at them before they can attack you again.

Well, dumping that XP into Maces & Flails didn't hurt too badly. This character went on to become my first win ever!

And the new elemental evokers are actually useful, instead of things I carried to eat up inventory slots, weigh me down, and add a hostile elemental to a tough fight. :)
