Jesters!

So, the new, long awaited background is finally in! (in trunk)
Any good strategies? Races to use?
I personally ditch the starting spellbook (got a gift namelex for it), an go full combat-namelexite. Especially since the staff is pretty strong.

But really, is this still the tavern? Where are the discussions about viability of pies. Or what race is best to take jester into extended. Or that we should bring back MD instead of adding new background.

I guess not many people play trunk..

It's been up for like 12 hours. Not many people stop the game they're playing just to start a new one with a class they don't even know is there.

All the talk happens on ##crawl.

Ditching the starting book is a big mistake IMO. Butterflies and Blink are very powerful survival tools. A Jester should never die to a lone Ogre or Orc Warrior.

I'm playing a MiJr... had an easy time during the first few levels, but now my starting weapon really sucks (Lair:2). I think I'll switch to maces. Nemelex has been useless as well so far. I sacrifice a ton of corpses and he gives me 2 decks of summoning over the whole game, thanks a lot buddy.

Yeah, but how do I download it? It wasn't on the trunk website, just online. Tried doing the compiling whatever but that's pretty tricky to figure out. People who know what they're doing already probably know how to get it, but that's why I'm asking, 'cause I'm dumb.

Re: Jesters!

Jesters were added to 0.13, and I don't see a downloadable package for that. You can definitely compile your own copy if you want to.

If you're on Windows, you'll want to download msysGit from here: http://msysgit.github.com/
The instructions for getting a copy of the code and compiling it can be found here or in the INSTALL.txt file that comes with download packages.

Re: Jesters!

Are you using windows? If so, download and install msysGit from the link in my previous post. Once it's installed, browse to the directory (default is c:\msysgit) and run msys.bat. That will start a command prompt window. Run the following:
  Code:
git clone git://gitorious.org/crawl/crawl.git
cd crawl
git submodule update --init
cd crawl-ref/source
make
(or, if you want tiles: make TILES=y)

make (TILES=y)

A fun way to play Jesters: go Spriggan, drop potion of porridge, sacrifice it to Nemelex, draw a couple cards from the deck of war, receive a gift, voila:

  Code:
_g - a plain deck of cards (in hand) {god gift}
You draw a card... It is Experience.
This is a plain deck of wonders {drawn: 1}.
 You feel more experienced.
Your Evocations skill gained 12 levels and is now at level 14!
 You have reached level 2!

get ornate decks for improved results:

Of course not. :) The card will only grant you one experience level, but the amount of skill experience is variable.

Also, cannot seem to find any crawl.exe file

Re: Jesters!

Well, i did try an old version first of Git; 1.7.1 long ago. Didnt work as i had no clue to what to do even by reading the installation files (I´m really bad with puters). So i installed the lastest beta version 1.8.1.2 and it downloaded all the stuff then at the same last line (make TILES=y) got a weird error message.
So i uninstalled both & instead reinstalled 1.7.1.1. This time i got to the "sh exe": make: command" not found.
So i uninstalled it again, and installed 1.8.1.2 one more time. And got the same result.

I am at a complete loss but i get the feeling that maybe the solution is quite simple.
This is all very confusing to me. It kills me to know that this is exactly what i have been looking for, a program that installs the game and then auto updates (sort of) so you don't have to dl every single new dev. build, and change all your personal preferences in the init.txt-file again and again.

Anyway, i just wanna make this work so i´m very grateful for your help and anyone else´s. Meanwhile I am trying to think of what i could have done wrong. Might it have something to do with having 2 different versions of GiT installed at first?

Can I check: you keep saying "git" and not "msysgit" - did you definitely download msysgit (from the link someone gave)? There is a very important difference.

Secondly, did you run msys.bat to get into an msys command line? This is a special command line that should have different colours to the normal Windows one.

Because if you've done these two things then it's very strange that it cannot find "make".

prozacelf: that's not really very helpful and also wildly inaccurate; many of us compile on Windows every day and have no problems whatsoever.

Actually, here's something far more useful:

The 0.13 builds are there, it's just that page hasn't been updated to list them yet.

So here's a link to the latest Windows installer: http://crawl.develz.org/trunk/crawl_setup-0.13-a0-188-g716d182.exe

I was wondering why i couldn't find the required bat files and why the git program installed in C:Program: (rather than C:).
That was exactly the reason why it didn´t work.
Thx so much, so glad i finally got this working. :D

Edit: one question; the msysgit prompt should always be kept in the background as i play that version, correct?

Skill point applicability reduces based on the amount of skill points you have, so subsequent experience cards should appear to provide fewer skill points.

The first action Experience card basically maximizes the amount received.
