Poison Arrow for a 3-runer

Is Poison Arrow sufficient for dealing with Orbs/ALiches in Zot 5?

If not, what would be the best thing for say, this guy here to branch into:

Vejumet's final 3 were firestorm/shatter/some form of lightning...I've also got a book of annihilations and a bunch of other books scattered around so I think my options are pretty open, I just need to formulate a plan before I go down the wrong road. (hopefully that ship has not already sailed)

In my experience, poison arrow deals with aliches fine, it will take care of orbs of fire too but I prefer orb of destruction or strong melee (the former of which you should be able to get, the latter of which you should probably train) for those.

Personally Poison Arrow comes off as pretty weak against the fiercer Denizens of Zot - even in current and previous versions. Throw your weight into something more dependable - Orb of Destruction can work 'okayish', Strong Melee will require a lot of training but will properly carry you through to the Orb and out if you push for it.

If you are uncomfortable with trying to melee with a mage, Strong Longbow is an acceptable alternative. Or actually, do crossbows so you can silver bolt the OoFs while relying on some other Conj for Ancient Liches.

Yes, but it makes Haste useless. I experienced the same issue and stopped using Haste when casting OoD.

I'm not certain but I think you can fire spells through your OoD without blowing it up? So you can alternate casting OoD and your level 6 conjuration. I guess taking steps back is still helpful though because you can get away if the fight is going bad.

The point (1) is to maintain distance and (2) if the situation goes bad, you're hasted (which is a lot better than being in a bad situation and not hasted).

Yup, that's the risk. I usually see how the first 2 or 3 go and stage a 'strategic withdrawal' if they miss. In any case, if relying purely on OoD, then the last couple might well be only wavering anyway.

Right, OoD is immune to many elements. But since I mostly use OoD against enemies who are immune to my main elements it still does not make sense for me to cast other spells.

I agree. I am happy to use OoD against melee monsters like tentacled monstrosity who are resistant/immune to my main elemental spells. But not against ranged/magic users where they attack me while I am retreating. Keeping distance is good but Haste can make you actually weaker: if you retreat every other turn, you cast OoD every 1.4 turn, without haste it would be every 1 turn.

As far as I remember I killed my own OoD by some spell and got frustrated. Perhaps I am wrong and it dissipated on its own.

I think some bugs where you could hit OoDs with spells have been fixed in the last few years. So if it was a long time ago, it might have been a thing that isn't anymore.

IIRC, you used to be able to Haunt and Imprison your own orbs, as well, which lead to some unintended uses :)

My favourite was to use them as a conduit for Chain Lightning - suddenly I could blow up stuff like I was close-range so long as I wasn't in an inconvenient corridor.

I thought undead were totally immune to poison?? Not just for standard fantasy setting/dnd whatever, but I stab the unliving crap out of undead monsters with daggers of venom and Ive never seen them get the poisoned sprite, or is that just because they just dont show status effects at all..

Poison Arrow has a physical component to it, not all of the damage it inflicts is poison. However, you won't do a whole lot of damage with it against targets that are poison resistant or immune since the physical component is only a small weighting.

It's about 30% for poison arrow. Inefficient but can get the job done against undead that are fragile or slow. Problem is, there are other rPois+++ targets out there who you don't want to waste time using poison arrow against.
