Cheibriados player losing piety over time

My character serves Cheibriados and has never used any god abilities but still I see piety is going back and forth from 0 stars to 1 star. I did not cast any hasty spells, did not wear any speedy items. There are no relevant messages in log either.
I tried source diving but it didn't help.
What am I missing with Chei?

Version 0.12 (I updated it yesterday and started a new game).

You may just be too quick for your own good -- some species are not good for Chei because they are inherently faster than most of the monsters and so you won't get the piety increases for killing them.

Except you do once you do get enough piety to become slower than them.

Re: Cheibriados player losing piety over time

But you can't lose already gained piety - it wouldn't go down to 0 from 1. In any case, centaurs and spriggans aren't good chei worshippers for this reason. I don't believe chei piety decays over time but I suppose it's possible I am wrong about this?

Make sure you aren't hasting anyone else - you can't haste mobs either, although I doubt this is the case. People generally only try that before slouching, and you can't do that with 1 star.

Why are you not killing lots of things faster than you are to be above the 0/1 star threshold already?

I tested chei piety in 0.12 wizmode and it did not decrease after waiting for a few thousand turns.

I am not sure how it was possible either. Perhaps I am mistaken. Unfortunately I can't investigate it further because the character is already dead :(
