Is Trog behaving (gifting) correctly?

I don't like creating bugs if I don't have to, and I figured here is the best place to ask.

I have a Spriggan Berserker.

He has the following skills:
Fighting: 10
Short Blades: 13
Long Blades: 2
Axes: 2

Bows: 8
Throwing: 3
Slings: 2

In my equipment I have a sling, a bow, some short swords and a blowgun.

Trog has gifted me (not necessarily in order)
4 short swords
2 war axes
a bow (at 0 Bow skill)

And after gaining level 8 in Bows
5 poisoned needles (I hadn't even tried the blowgun)
another war axe
and
a crossbow

Is Trog supposed to be gifting me items I can't really (or don't want to) use?

Also maybe there should be a bug speculation subforum for asking whether or not something is a bug before going to the tracker.

Just making sure. I was under the impression he gifted skewed based on known / experienced skills.

So... getting that crossbow, but having zero skill in it is basically an instance of Trog bucking the gifting trend?

Well, good old Trog is kind of....special, It's from all the knocks on the head, you understand. So don't be surprised if he sometimes decides you should be using axes when you're a swordsman. Just keep going, he's gonna get the idea eventually.

He never really got the idea with my last kobold, but luckily Margery decided to "gift" me a demon whip of speed.

He keeps giving me slings now. This is like the first time I played a SpBe and Trog gave me seven negative valued sling artifacts.

Re: Is Trog behaving (gifting) correctly?

Torg will generally provide weapons & ammo geared towards your skills, though this can be frustrating if you have unwanted skill ranks (SpBe's and axes, or the few levels in throwing almost everyone picks up).

Trog will occasionally also gift you something you have no skill in. Mid to late game, these items are generally useless. Early game though, they can be awesome. Getting a long blade if you were planning on upgrading from short is pretty cool. An early crossbow can be very powerful- especially if you get penetration.

So when Trog gifts you something off the wall, it's not that He's ignorant of your current interests. He's just making a suggestion, trying to expand your horizons, expose you to a new hobby. And if you don't like it, don't worry. There's plenty more gifts around the corner. ;)

My last few zerkers I've tried to never throw anything so that I don't get buried in a hail of darts and needles from trog.

And sometimes you're just going to get a few dozen slings. Just use them for jock straps.

Re: Is Trog behaving (gifting) correctly?

IIRC, the chance of getting a weapon that trains a particular weapon skill is (1+ weapon skill) / (8+(sum of all weapon skills except Unarmed)).

This formula should work for weapon gifts from all gods (probably except Xom), as well as for weapons acquired via the scroll. You'll never receive a weapon you can not use at all or any such that would cause a statdeath (again, except Xom).

As we forgive our developers,
And lead us not into the Abyss,
But deliver us from Sigmund,
For Thine is the Roguelike,
the Orb and the Victory,
now and forever.

I think with missiles it also somehow factors in how many you are carrying.

On the subject of missile gifts, are throwing nets a possible god gift? All I seem to get is needles and javelins with throwing, and would love some nets once in a while since they degrade so fast.

Re: Is Trog behaving (gifting) correctly?

That's true. Nets are a cool mechanic but they are mostly an early-game gimmick.

Maybe there should be a randart unbreakable net in the game that can be reused infinitely. A steel net, perhaps? Or just more drops of them.
