There's a fancy looking ring on d:1, but it's on a teleport trap. When I try to apport it, it says "the mass is resisting your pull". Will it work eventually if I keep trying? Or do I need to find an amulet of stasis?

It's a long walk back and forth to try it -- any idea how high? My translocation was at zero (my char is only level 8).

Rings are pretty light so you shouldnt need much, maybe 1 or 2 levels of tloc.

I did three levels and it worked. Not bad for d:1:

Unless he had gone to Temple or Lair to make a stash already, I'd say that quaffing a potion for a Un-ID D:1 artifact ring is a pretty fair trade - if it works.

He could also just kill half a floor while training only Translocations and save the potion for an emergency.

Apportation is a spell that every single character who picks up items and does not worship Trog wants to learn (this equates to every character who does not worship Trog). Tloc skill to make apportation good enough to pick up a ring is never wasted.

It depends on what you want to accomplish. If you want quick and dirty it's ok, if you can wait and return later, it's a potion use.
