Is there a way to don't die in this situation?

After an awesome start, with plenty of rings, boots of quickness and an awesome +5+8 whip (slay orc, str+3, see invisible), I put on a random ring and it's a cursed intelligence one.
Not a problem I think, then I read on a remove curse scroll but.. "you are too dumb to read".. ssshit, that was a -6 ring and my intelligence as a minotaur is 5!

What can I do? Drinked all my unidentified potions, and none of them was brillance.

Seems like you're screwed! As a last resort, cut your finger ;)

Re: Is there a way to don't die in this situation?

that happened once to me, via orange bloody statue in the elven halls. i was aware of the risk, and i was carrying a couple potions of restore abilities just in case, except... that i wasn't. i dropped them in the stash by mistake. so i died. but what i wanted to say is that i had nothing else to do so i auto-run like mad towards the stash and actually got quite close. so you may die in the next turn, or may have a few dozen to try and fix it, you never know. i'd say run like mad towards the heart of the dungeon, to see if you find unidentified potions or a royal jelly, or to the exit stairs (you may make it with a little luck).

Umm... why don't you read one of your scrolls of remove curse and take off the ring?

EDIT: apparently I'm too dumb to fully read the OB. Sorry.

I guess it still is important to raise those stats to a minimum of 8!

Are you playing 0.8?

In my last game (0.8), I've had my Int drop well below 0 and that did not affect my character. Have there been any changes to stat death?

The ring was cursed before you put it on. It won't autocurse unless it is an artefact that specifically has the re-curse property. So the way to avoid dying in that situation would be to use a scroll of detect curse before trying on jewelry, and use a scroll of identify on anything potentially dangerous.

I drank the potion on haste and runned downstairs.. lurked as much as I could searching for unidentified potions but didn't find anything and obviously forgot to breath in the whole process.

True but I'll not do it anyway, it's the first time I die this way.. and btw I think a best thing would be always carrying at least a potion of brillance.

royal jellies and potions of restore abilities don't cure stats penalties from cursed items. So it wouldn't have helped him. Only a potion of brilliance could have.

.. this was my best char ever.
8 potions of gain dexterity.. uber demon whip of electricity.. wand of hasting, 10 scroll of recharge, +3 artifact cloak +3 damage, +1 buckler of protection, etc etc etc.

Nothing I can do right now to save my ass, I guess.

Pro tip: use detect curse scrolls before wear id any rings or amulets.

That's really the only thing to say about this situation. At some point I got so annoyed by being teleported randomly that I swore to never wear a piece of jewelry without checking if it's cursed first.

I too made such a swear, and the one time I forgot and didn't check, I put on two hunger rings on like DL 2.
