Shields

Or, why experienced players continually tell people to stop using them.

1. In crawl, shields don't affect your ac, they impair your ev by a bit and give you blocking. Blocking allows you to block all damage from some attacks, including some spells, arrows, and melee. Shields also prevent you from using your off hand for auxiliary unarmed attacks and slow your attack speed without enough skill (see shield[2]).
2. You need 5/15/25 skill to eliminate evasion, melee speed, damage, and casting penalties for bucklers/shields/large shields for normal races, 7/21/- for kobolds and halflings, 9/-/- for spriggans, 3/9/15 for nagas and centaurs, -/9/15 for trolls and ogres.
3. When wearing a robe (or other EVP 0 armour), you need less shield skill to eliminate just the casting penalties: 1/11/21 for normal races, 1.4/15.4/- for kobolds and halflings, 1.8/- for spriggans, 0.6/6.6/12.6 for nagas and centaurs, -/6.6/12.6 for trolls and ogres.
4. Shields can be enchanted to +3. Each enchantment increases the shielding by 1. Bucklers (5 SH, -1 EV); Shields (8 SH, -3 EV); Large Shield (13 SH, -5 EV). Every level of shield skill increases the shielding by 1/20 of the base shield value. You also get an effective SH bonus based on your str and dex (for large and regular) or dex (for bucklers).
5. You will block a missile if a random number up to 130% of the missile to-hit is less than a random number (on 2 dice) up to 2/3 of your SH; a melee instead uses a random number up to 15 + to-hit / 2. Both to-pass-shield values are inflated by 5 * (previous blocks this turn)^2.

Why shields are, in general, bad:
1. The best defense is a good offense. 9 times out of 10 you will take less damage by killing the dude faster with a bigger weapon, rather than swatting him with a smaller weapon and hoping you block his extra attacks.
2. The biggest/most annoying threats in crawl (torment,hellfire,smite,mutation,paralysis,constriction,fireball,most bolts,miasma,dispel undead,hell effects,zot traps) cannot be blocked. Whether you have 70 SH or 0, they hurt just the same.
3. AC and EV work against more threats than SH. HP and killdudesing work against everything. XP that would be spent on shield skill is almost always better spent developing other skills instead.
4. Shields become less effective based on how many times you block in a turn (see learndb #5). This means when you stair dance vaults:8 or charge that yaktaur pack, your other defensive stats end up working much harder than your SH.

Situations where I would use a:
Buckler:
- stabbers
- spriggan who doesn't want a 1.5 hander
- kobold/halfling
- normal sized race who has a good reason* to not use a two handed weapon

Shield:
- large race who has a good reason* to not use a two handed weapon (in general, trolls should UC and ogres should GSC)
- normal sized race who finds a good ego (resistance,rF,rC), can spare the XP, and has a good reason* to not use a two handed weapon
- you find The Gong and you want awesome points

Large Shield:
- Never. I mean it.

*good reasons: UC, enhancer staff (you mainly killdudes with spells), autumn katana (more awesome points)

Also, this is why I keep suggesting at higher levels of skill, some weapon types should provide a low SH value; for fun!

(though in regards to large shields... "after 5 zigs" could replace that :P)

@XuaXua: I would think that a buckler is better for that char. That shield requires a lot of investment. Think of it this way: a ton of experience invested in spellcasting skills is a lot more useful than INT +3 and a small increase in defence.

eeviac: what you say is very true for extended. Inexperienced players who "stick to the basics" will face only smite, paralysis and maybe fireball, in this case shields have higher value.
Problem is that what's irrelevant in extended game, is suboptimal for a three-run win but viable for someone just trying to survive Vaults.

Most players who cast conjurations or summons to kill things probably want a buckler. In the late game perhaps they want a shield. In that sense shields are good because they just require some XP to complement spells well. If you want to use weapons to kill things (apart from stabbing, large rocks, kobolds, as pointed out enhancer staff, etc.) shields are not so good because in addition to the potential XP investment they reduce your killdudsing by restricting weapon choice.

Also, if you charge that yaktaur pack they'll be shooting missiles at you, which shields are good at blocking. One probably should not charge a yaktaur pack anyway (retreat around a corner instead; you might want to charge the centaur pack tho).

For a 3 rune game almost all of the functionality of shields is replaced by getting better at positioning for characters who kill everything with melee. Once you are actually next to whatever you want to kill a two-handed weapon is better than a one-hander plus shield in general.

Eh, seems a bit oversold. For a general-case primary-melee character that gets a fairly typical distribution of item drops, two-handed weapons are generally going to be the most favorable choice. This inclination is subject to the influence of the RNG, however, and also the player's judgment. A D2 demon whip, for instance, is still an enormous windfall that will carry such a character to Zot, and as long as you're committing to using this D2 demon whip until Zot you might as well train up some shield skill to pair with it. Post-endgame is eminently do-able with a holy scourge, too, so you might never feel the need to switch. The fact that two-handed weapons are generally favorable for the character type doesn't necessarily mean the choice will always be one of those no-brainers I hear so much about.

One point in the shield's favor is that it's really easy to get a good score in SH. 5 shields and a buckler will get around 14~16SH, which is going to be pretty solid damage mitigation against orcs and yaks in the early game. 15 shield skill and a regular shield will bring you up to 32~36SH, which is really darn hard to reach with EV. Even Cerebov is going to be whiffing most of the time against that, at least in melee, so go right ahead and snuggle up close.

SH drops off in efficacy fast if you allow yourself to get mobbed, but you generally shouldn't be allowing yourself to get mobbed whether you have a shield or not. Face-to-face with a single opponent in a corridor, it's every bit as good as the same value of EV.

Even if you do switch to a two-handed weapon at some point, it isn't like it's a waste to sink some xp into shields if it helps you get to the point where you can switch. If Leech spawns for you early enough to matter, and you're either going long blades or willing to switch, you use that sucker and train up a buckler, and when it's time to upgrade to a triple sword for the demonic branches you can toss your shield without a moment's thought. Those skill levels already did their job getting you to this point, so they're not wasted.

Maybe it's worth overselling the point, though. I more often see people clutching a shield that isn't doing them any favors, than I see people passing over a shield in favor a two-handed weapon that isn't actually any good.

Question: how exactly do shields compare to EV, defense-wise? Say I've got 10 AC, 15 EV, and 10 SH. Is that more or less optimal than 10 AC, 25 EV, O SH? I'm guessing the numbers aren't just interchangeable like that, but why exactly would a super high EV be preferred over mid-range EV and SH together?

I'm speaking mainly about casters and hybrids, where damage may not come from executioner axes and triple swords.

basically SH is EV that doesn't block magical bolts, decreases when multiple monsters attack you, and imposes penalties if you don't have high skill levels or basically none of it

On "casters" and hybrids that do a lot of damage with their magical skills and don't have really high weapon apts (most Mf "hybrids" do want a bardiche IMO), I do recommend using a buckler and not more than that though, despite SH being quite bad.
10/25 is better than 10/15/10 in my experience (not backed by exact calculations here, just experience from thousands of games). I would not follow this blindly though because 10/25 being better in my experience might also be the case because when I lack SH, I am using two-handers more often.

Take an eight-headed hydra as an example. A character with high EV gets to roll their full EV against the first head, which either hits or misses. Then the character gets to roll their full EV against the second head, which likewise hits or misses. So on for all eight heads. They are likely to dodge several heads each turn, significantly reducing the hydra's damage output.

A character with high SH, on the other hand, starts off similarly rolling their full SH against the first head. If that head still hits, they get to continue to the second head still rolling their full SH, but if that first head is blocked successfully they get a major penalty to their SH for the second head. Every time they successfully block a head, the penalty to SH gets even more massive for all the following heads, and it's already crippling after the first successful block. So the SH character is likely to block only one of eight heads, and will almost certainly not block more than two. The hydra is only mildly inconvenienced.

The situation isn't always so bleak, though. A stone giant throws one big rock per turn, and after closing to melee will punch one time per turn. The EV character gets to check their full EV against the stone giant, and the SH character likewise gets to check their full SH against that stone giant. By the time the stone giant gets to attack again, the SH character has had time for the SH penalty for a successful block to time out, so both characters get to use their full EV/SH score every time. Unless, heaven forbid, there's a giant bat too, in which case the bat will dart in, get shield-blocked, and then the SH character gets to suck up the SH penalty when the stone giant gets its turn.
