Sickness from contaminated chunks

Am I imagining things, or does this seem to have less of a chance to be inflicted on your character as they gain levels? Is there a stat or intrinsic the game checks against to see if you become sick?

From experience, it seems like low-level chars get this pretty often, whereas when you get somewhere past level 10-12, it hardly ever seems to happen...

No, probably just a coincidence.

Although Hill Orcs and Ogres have a slightly lower chance of sickness, Trolls and Kobolds have an extremely low chance of sickness, and Ghouls are immune to sickness (but changed in 0.8).

You blink. You feel slightly more hungry. Prince Ribbit hits you. You die...
"Hey, that's my toy!"
Xom revives you!
