Help Jim(MDFi) out!

After playing several types of spellcasters, I've been trying to create a succesful Melee character. I decided to go with a MDFi, because the idea of having a big beard appeals to me. After about ten deaths (one with a quite amusing banishment to the abyss by Erolcha, didn't know she was capable of that :D), I finally have a decent character up and running. He's cleared most of the lair, succesfully navigated (my first) labyrinth and can now comfortably kill beasts like hydra's and death yaks one to one. So, after finally getting spellcasting by reading scrolls and being quite fortunate with the books he found, he's starting to learn some buff spells. His god is Okawaru. He also got lucky by drinking a mutation potion, getting teleport control and magical resistance.

Basically I'm wondering if I'm building him alright. I'm thinking of getting translocation up to a decent level so I can control blink and teleport self. I also want the stoneskin spell powered up, and that Stone Giant Transformation spell is catching my eye as well. Being able to cast berserk sounds pretty good to me as well. Should I continue victory dancing myself into a decent magician?

Any tips or advice would be most welcome! Feeling good about this one.

Blarg, heavy rediting of post after seeing the dump.

You're gonna want to start investing in int if you ever want to cast anything. Those are not happy success rates.

Escape spells are always useful, especially w/ cTele. So it's worth training a fell levels in translocations- pick up blink, teleport self, and the always useful apportation. Other good support spells for a mele character include repel/deflect arrows, swiftness, and phase shift. You have a nice racial aptitude for earth magic, so you might be able to pull off statue form, but that's best use unarmed. And If you're using an axe or mace, it's kind of a waste. Stoneskin prolly doesn't offer you much on top of your existing armor.

It might be hard getting swiftness or deflect arrows trained up since they're air and you already have levels in earth. Although, that might be a good thing, as it means more points will go strait to enchantments.

Maxwell's Silver hammer is useless.

You prolly want to do the hive now- it'll be nice and easy with rPois.

'Good' success rate with spells is a filthy, malicious lie. That word actually describes a 20% failure rate, and a translocations miscast can potentially result in self-banishment to the Abyss. Grind your magic skills one at a time, since having two buffs at 'Good' is still completely worthless. Get one to 'Excellent', and then work on the other. Translocations and enchantments are going to be better investments than transmutations or elemental skills. Especially translocations, since you have the crazy-lucky teleport control mutation.

You are going to want to find some dragon armor. Regular dragon armor, ice dragon armor, swamp dragon armor, and pearl dragon armor are probably the only ones worth considering, but mind the elemental weaknesses of the first two. Swamp dragon armor is very likely to be found in the Swamp, logically enough. You merely need to liberate a swamp dragon hide from its former owner, which should be manageable only due to your buckler. Watch out for the other nasties down there; most of them move much faster in the water than you're likely to be expecting.

Thanks for all the advice! Jim's still alive and kicking, having fun blowing up - and consequently eating - Nessos with a wand of disintegration and squashing bees. The hive was kind enough to give me a ring of protection +5, and the mass murder of insects pleased Okawaru into giving me a decent cloak of darkness. Tempted to crank up Evocation so I'll be able to become invisible...

I wasn't aware having a high Earth skill made training Air more difficult... Interesting, makes sense too. I didn't know Maxwell's silver hammer, so I thought I'd give it a go, and ... Yes, it seems rather useless. I've been able to improve my succes rates with a ring of wizardry, but still have a long way to go if I want to cast teleport self. I guess the statue form spell is rather pointless, but the idea of crushing things with my bare hands sounded amusing. I guess I was enticed by the spell description. :D Put my lvl 15 stat point in intelligence, so with my trusty mace I at least have... 8 intelligence.

I actually encountered and killed a swamp dragon, and am now the proud owner of its skin. I have no idea what to do with it in order to make proper armor of it though. ;)

EDIT: Sorry, but I had to add this: I just found a distressingly furry helmet! I don't think I've ever been more excited to read an identify scroll.

Use an enchant armor scroll on it. Well worth it. It will not hinder your casting any more than the ring mail you had, but its base AC is the same as banded mail.

You don't need to spend an identify scroll trying to ID armour because it automatically and fully ID's on wearing. Unless you were scared of a curse, in which case you should have just had a detect curse or remove curse scroll handy.

I would actually recommend sticking with your current armour because while rPois from the swamp dragon armour is nice, you already have it from your buckler. Your ring mail is at least Dwarven in nature and offers rN+. But you'll want to upgrade to some ego heavier armour ASAP like a chain mail or banded mail (hope Okie gifts you something good).

Are you still using that +5,+5 hammer (crush, Int+1)? That weapon is WAY too weak for this point in the game, you want at least a spiked flail or something. Okie should have gifted you a nice weapon by now, but if he hasn't, you'll want to keep on the lookout for one. You seem to have gotten a +5,+6 dire flail earlier, why not use it? Unless it has something awful like +MUT.

And as for spellcasting, I would honestly recommend forgetting about it because if you're like most heavy armour fighters, you're gonna want to use a gold dragon armour and large shield in the endgame, and those things are so heavy that level 1 spells will be at Useless, even with a ring of wizardry. Unless, of course, you plan to stick with something lighter and somewhat better (like a +6 chain mail {rF+}). Still, the large shield will cause trouble, especially with your low Intelligence. Don't hope for anything beyond level 2 spells (Apportation, Repel Missiles, Swiftness, and Blink are still manageable). Forget about Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Stoneskin; the latter only provides earth_magic/5 + 2 AC, which, at your current level, is a mere +3 AC. It's a crappy spell in general that maxes out at +7 AC, but there's no way any normal 3-runer will ever reach that point.

Quaff your potions or ID them. Seriously.

Keep Fighting turned on forever, absolutely no reason to turn it off. I would also recommend keeping Armour and Shields on because they scale nicely with skill and train rather passively. Turn off Evocations because it is rarely used and has negligible effects (unless you worship Nemelex, which you don't). Turn off Fire magic, Earth magic, and Transmutations.

Phew! I'm gonna call it a night. Just had a quite exciting encounter with Wayne, almost got myself killed. Had to use a lot of blinks to get away from his hasted ass, which got me a nasty glow. Along with some other unfortunate mutations my character has endured, my body is now slowly deteriorating. Now, I know Crawl isn't a 'nice' game, but that just sounds mean. Oh, I didn't know wearing armor identified everything, I just though it ID'd the stuff that was 'obvious'. I'd use the Dire flail, but it's two handed and I rather appreciate my shield. :D I actually wasn't quaffing my potions because I didn't want to accidentally lose the teleport control by drinking a potion of cure mutation. As my last encounter with Wayne showed me, Controlled blink is a lifesaver.

Wearing armor and weapons ID's everything- but you should read detect curse first, or have remove curse handy, so you don't get trapped in bad gear. Rings and amulets only give away "obvious" features when test ID-ing, and usually need the scroll.

You're right to not test ID potions till you find cure mut. Scroll ID potions till you find it- start with small stacks since it's rarer. Once you've found it, it's safe to test ID.

You may want to make a stash. You don't need to carry that much food, and carrying big stacks of scrolls is just asking for something to pop up and reduce them to so much ash.

Crawl isn't 'nice' per say. It just isn't a committed sociopathic sadist like some rougelikes out there, and seems nice by comparison. (Cue lengthy, indulgent off topic debate on the hypothetical personalities, dispositions, and motivations of Crawl and it's various siblings, and their RGN's :p ).
