Is summoning a good complement to a SpVM of Vehumet?

Just starting up a SpVM of Vehumet, and I've found both the book of callings and the book of summonings on the dungeon floor.

Is the game trying to tell me something?

I want to try the poison arrow gatling gun, but I realize that there is the weakness with the SpVM of stuff that is poison resistant. What to SpVMs typically develop as their fallback for poison resistant monsters?

Incidentally, I've found a nice little dagger of electrocution too. And the Book of Control.

Re: Is summoning a good complement to a SpEn of Vehumet?

Well, Shadow Creatures is pretty cool. I cast it twice on entering Orc:2. The first time, I get a single orc. The second time, I get an orc warrior, an Orc high priest, an orc priest and a few more grunts. And then the high priest starts summoning demons for me. Nice.

But I realize there is an incompatibility with conjurations - all those summons get in the way of my conjurations. I guess as a Spriggan I can run around for a better vantage point and then start blasting.

Walking away? Never! Maybe that's why I always die...

You're playing a spen. You should invisi-stab everything and use summons on stupid stuff with sinv. I don't really see the point of having poison arrow on a spen unless you haven't found a good summoning spell (anything level 4+ should be fine).

This is embarrassing. It's actually a SpVM. Typo in the title.

Summoning is far from necessary until the late game (Hell, Pand, Tomb). Poison Arrow, OOD, Freezing Cloud and utility spells like flight, dispel missiles, and haste should allow you to do a 3 rune run. The only summoning spell you should consider for the early game is Animate Dead...
