Not sure about Sure Blade

Is Sure Blade worth learning with a SpEn?

[15:37] <Henzell> protip[6/21]: For the record, Sure Blade is far from useless both early and late in the game. If anything, the spell is closer to being overpowered than underpowered. --rwbarton

If you intend to do anything with your weapon besides stab, then it's very useful.

Henzell is this really awesome dude who comes up with all sorts of great quotes.
Sometimes he rips the rest of us off though

I was a bit surprised that someone with 600+ posts here hadn't heard of Henzell.

Use the bots all the time, just never saw that it was called Henzell lol Just assumed he was someone's alter ego on crawl IRC.

Given the general nature and quality of these 600+ posts I'm not surprised at all.

(post deleted by a mod in 5...4...3... (despite being accurate and relevant (NO FUN ALLOWED)))

by the way I'm still not convinced that sure blade's usefulness isn't some running joke, but then again it's reid's quote there and I know that whatever reid does just works

Re: Not sure about Sure Blade

fyi Henzell is named after Linley Henzell, the writer of the original Dungeon Crawl lo these many years ago. Gretell cements the pun.

I found it helpful in Zot on my SpEn^Kiku, who murdered everything with a pain dagger.

How good can it be? How big exactly is the bonus to hit? I assume there's no +Dam bonus.

Well, mostly it acts as a damage per unit time multiplier. Not in terms of a damage boost, or cutting time between attacks, but in increasing the number of hits that connect. If you pay attention to your message spam, misses are kind of a regular occurrence. Sure blade turns many of this missed opportunities into damage.

It's hard for me to put into numbers, but you experiment with it on and off in the late game, you will definitely notice targets going down faster with it on.

Granted, stabbing is better, but if you're doing endgame stuff you can't get away stabbing everything.

Yeah but I don't think I put sure blade in it. It's been a while.

At reasonably high power, Sure Blade provides a +10 to accuracy. Compare that to the EV scores of typical high-EV monsters, like orc casters which have EV scores of… 10. Enemy spriggans tend to have EV scores in the 20-25 range, and dodging stuff is one of their two gimmicks, the other being the fact that they are nigh-impossible to outrun. Top-end EV uniques like Ereshkigal and The Enchantress have 30 and 40 EV respectively, but remember you're stacking that +10 onto a character than has accuracy from fighting, weapon skill, and is using a weapon with an accuracy bonus besides.

Crawl is really not geared to handle a slotless +10 to accuracy that stacks with all the other boosts you can find.

What KL means is that Sure Blade is very, very good if you don't mind the tedium of using it. +10 acc slotless is really quite powerful.
What made you happy today?
