Evocations - When should I turn it off?

Hey guys, playing a DDFi and wondering when I should turn Evocations off? Should I just leave it on all the time or does it have a soft cap? I'm at 12.3 skill level right now if that helps.

Unless you're following Nemelex or using an elemental staff (which were nerfed I think?), the answer is "about 6 levels ago."Alternatively, "once your evocation sucess rates are good enough" if you have an amulet of rage or whatever

Evocations doesn't increase the efficacy of wands of heal wounds, if that's why you've been upping it..

I'm upping it to identify charges left in wands (nothing sucks more than trying to use a key wand and finding it empty) and also because I may be switching to earth magic if I come across the staff of earth at a reasonable time (since I have found the starting earth book). My +Rage has 6% failure at Evo 13 right now which is good enough for me so I've turned it off there (I dislike uncompleted levels) but mostly it's been on in the background of my other abilities and I noticed it was high which is why I asked here

If you're worried about wand identification, just use a scroll of identify on it. You should have plenty lying around. If you're specializing in staves, Evocations can be worth training, but chances are you're going for axes and if so, you should just stick with axes. Evocations in general requires a lot of skill investment for little return.

Wands ID with Evo/27 chance per zap, so you have ~47% chance of identifying on cast. Don't worry about it.

Rods and Wands are adjusted for damage based on Evo, right? So if you use either quite frequently, it makes sense to keep Evo on.

LearnDB wrote:This skill affects wands, abilities related to decks, and abilities gained from items. Evocation skill adds to wand power, though spell power caps are still respected.At 27 evocations, wands are on average a bit less than twice as powerful.

It does take lvl. 27 though. IMO unless wands (LearnDB said nothing of rods, although I suspect they should be affected as well, but take that with a grain of salt) is your primary method of dealing damage 13 evo is high enough.

So this info should probably be put on LearnDB...

Re: Evocations - When should I turn it off?

The correct formula for wands is this one:
  Code:
power = 15 + 2.5 * evo

As One-Eyed Jack said, zapping yourself with wand of heal wounds is just like quaffing a potion of heal wounds.
