Unexplained Happenings

Share with us your experiences that you still don't know what exactly happened. I'll start:

So I was rolling around on level 17 with my SETm doing my thing. I had just carved up my first rakshasha without breaking a sweat. Anywho, I'm on auto explore and I stop because I see some steam in the hallway behind me. Weird, so I pull out my Wolverine claws (blade hands) and get a message that there is a strange disturbance nearby. Swing a few times, get some misses and finally get a hit. Don't get any experience, but it does reactivate auto pickup. I'm figuring it was just an unseen horror, but why the steam? I'm baffled.

Any guesses?

Was there lava beside some water just out of sight? That would make steam. The the disturbance would be inside the water.

Maybe the horror wandered into the steam and died?

Nope. No lava or water on the entire level.

I'd speculate that an invisible monster triggered a pressure plate trap, which eventually killed it. Are you sure it was steam clouds, and not miasma or roiling chaos clouds?

But he would still get exp if the horror was killed by a trap.

Not if he never caused damage to the monster, right? A hit does not necessarily mean he woulded the monster.
