Which version do you play? Tiles or Console/ASCII

I'm just curious really. When I discovered DCSS, I played the Tiles version exclusively. However, a couple of days ago I felt like trying the Console version and I have to say, I really like that version too. It feels very authentic. Now I play both versions pretty much equally. What about you?

Re: Which version do you play? Tiles or Console/ASCII

All tiles all the time, been playing offline cos I wanted to play .10, but usually it's webtiles so friends and I can make fun fo each others deaths.

ASCII has always done my eyes in, and I really see no reason to tweak it to be usable for me when there's such nice tiles. Also the character dolls are much more endearing than an @ to me. 8-)

I mainly play tiles. I'm perfectly capable of playing ASCII but I like the tiles for fruity bats/mace of variability/etc.

Only the console version. I don't mean offend anyone, but tiles looks so ugly...

My favourite font is monofur, and I always use the default character set. BTW, the glyph that represents the PC can be changed if you don't like it. I use show_player_species=true.

I play mainly tiles. And it's maybe the only game where both are available that I play with tiles. It also allow lazy item management with the mouse for when I'm tired.
Maybe someday I will try the isometric version, just to see. http://rltiles.sourceforge.net/

I prefer tiles, but actually play mostly ASCII so I can play trunk online.

Tiles for me. Offline tiles, even. I like using the mouse for a bunch of stuff.

I've been practicing telling letters apart since I was ten months old, and I can do so fairly well at this point. I can't tell an orc from a gnoll or a slime from a jelly in tiles to save my life. I stick with ascii.

Both. ASCII for online, tiles for local wizmode experimentation.

This is the first roguelike I've ever played that had tiles that were actually worth using, and I love them. :)

Offline Tiles.

I can customise them, after all. And I like my pretties. ASCII makes my brain hurt.

Tiles only. I appreciate ASCII cause it allows you to use your imagination but I love mouse support for quick inventory management way too much. That's why I play offline mostly.

Offline tiles. Mouse support is too handy to give up. I'll check out online tiles whenever it gets mouse support, though being unable to name my characters will be missed.

Eternal and cyclic discussion, I prefer myself ascii because I get a quicker idea of the situation just paying attention to symbols and colors. I, rational human and nerd, prefer symbolic language rather than pictures/pictograms despite how accurate they are.

Console, because it's the only way to play trunk online. I'll probably give glyph mode webtiles a try when it gets trunk support.

Offline tiles, though I rarely use the mouse. Online console.

I have a deep nostalgic love for the ASCII version based on playing an old Hack variant as a kid. I tried out tiles last year though and I really enjoy the extra info available there.

Re: Which version do you play? Tiles or Console/ASCII

ASCII online for several reasons:
- I'm a bit of tradicionalist ;).
- Mouse support. although nice to have, is of little value to me.
- I can play trunk online. And I pretty much _only_ play trunk online, to keep up with the game.
- Attempting tiles felt to me like learning a completely new game.

Bottom line: To my friends who do not feel like going ASCII, I recommend tiles and they are usually happy with them. For me, ASCII FTW!

ASCII. The monochromity is the main appeal: the gameplayic simplicity of using symbols to represent the characters is a benefit unto itself. Plus the whole semiotics behind the symbols and the colour: the blackness between envelopes the player in the dungeon's darkness!
