Cheibriados spellcaster?

Well I have something I've wanted to try out for a while now - a spellcaster who worships Che. Simple enough, I guess, however lately the game seems to have taken a liking to screwing me over more than usual, so I'm considering about mixing things up. So far my default "spellcaster" character is a deep elf wizard with flame book, but I am starting to wonder if a Che worshiper might need to be something different. Does anyone who has played characters who worship Che have any thoughts on the matter? (Oh and I know Transmuters supposedly work well with him, but I'm not looking for a transmuter and more of a blaster type of mage)

Nagas are naturally slow and have decent HP. Might be worth a shot.

Even if you don't want to be a tansmuter you will probably want to learn spider form if you can for escaping bad situations. This would link well with Naga's poison aptitudes. Also you would need blink to help get outta trouble, especially with control teleport. Without either of these options you are just going to have to stand and deliver your spells all of the time which sounds pretty dangerous.

Which is the main reason I'm not quite sure about the nagas (nagii? I dunno?) They are already slow as it is and if I slap on a bunch of ponderous armor on top of them there would probably be glaciers moving faster than me. Blink and Spider Form were both spells I was considering, which is why I also plan on sticking with a Wizard since they have blink in their spellbooks (and I usually find at least
one other spell book before the Lair or so, baring unnaturally bad luck of course. )
Hmm well I guess I might give a Naga Wizard a try and see how it goes. I'll be reporting my observations in this thread.

Is there a limit on how slow you can get like there is with how fast? Looking at the wiki and learndb it doesn't seem like it. A naga with a full set (although getting a naga barding is another story) of pounderous armour would be moving at speed 24 rather than 20 for a normal worshipper of Che. This equates to 0.42 times normal rather than 0.5, not that much difference.
I actually really like the idea of a 25 str 40 int Naga wizard, the extra strength should make training fighting easier right? If you focus on getting fighting up 5-10 levels when you start getting the bonuses then the guy should be able to take a lot of hurting.

STR reduces armor penalty so it may be possible to cast in heavy armor, especially with the ridiculous INT you'll have. Also, I'm aware that spider form can no longer be used to escape with in 0.8. It makes Chei mad just like casting Haste.

That's why I'm hoping I survive long enough to get my hands on a bit more translocation spells and rely on teleporting and blinking to get out of danger. So far I'm level 7, found Che's altar in a room surrounded by lava (which wasn't that impressive since I had a ring of levitation) and currently wear 2 pieces of ponderous armor. First book I found in the game so far? Minor Magic [frost]. Yeah....great. Here's hoping for something better.

Doblepost, yeah. Level 10 I get cast into the Abyss by weapon of distortion. Start wandering and blinking around. Found the Abyssal rune after a few steps and later on got killed by a demon that set all of my scrolls on fire with sticky flame. Ironically, this is the first time I have ever had a character get a rune....yay. Might give this combo another try, it was pretty fun.

Fast transformations don't anger Chei, they just keep the ponderousness from their melded armour.
If you can get Leda's Liquefaction up and running that might work nicely as a reverse Haste while you spam conjurations at things.

(Another NaWi down the drain. This time it was a troll and ogre + a hound that somehow cornered me. Blinking proved useless and i soon ran out of MP. Oh well.)
Hmm the wiki has nothing on Leda's Liquefaction - what the hell is that spell, and in what book is it found?

It's a new spell in trunk that creates an area of liquefied ground around you, irresistibly slowing anything that's standing on it, letting you fire more attack spells at them as they take longer to approach you (less useful for melee because you fumble like in shallow water while it's active).
From Henzell: "Level 6 earth spell, found in the book of the Earth. Generates a halo of "liquefied" ground around the caster. Moving on liquefied ground has a -3 player movement malus (slightly more than one item of ponderousness). Applies slow effect to monsters. Doesn't affect flying, clinging, insubstantials; cannot be cast by these."

they make good hybrid builds. i had a deep dwarf necromancer/fighter (i know, i know, but i loved the bloody fella) who was just incredible, and got killed on snake:5 due to my playing half-sleep (a guardian naga or something like that got me, when i had dispatched half a dozen already). the little guy made great use of all three stat boosts: str for bashing things and carrying stuff, int for casting and dex for evasion, as i was going for light armor. the resistances were also nice, and the special abilities were pretty good (piety gain is alright).
i also got two necronomicons by dungeon level 7 or something like that, just nuts. i didn't get to memorize any of those spells (the only pure-necromancy is torment, for which i had no use whatsoever as a deep dwarf).

Tried it out as a mummy wizard and I gotta say - it worked really well most of the time (I don't get why people have such a problem with mummies. Sure they learn slow, but why are you in a hurry to go anywhere?) except the lowest level of the Lair kind of got a bit too much. Things that I can't Mephitic Cloud out of the way I had to try and take down, and then came in the main problem with wizards - the lack of higher level damaging spells. Che was pretty fun to use, and I was planning on enchanting and then converting that cloak of darkness before it was turned to shit by some kind of slug or something, I don't recall it. It had an acidic bite. I suspect a Mummy of Ashenzari would be a good combo, since Mummies would benefit from Ash's extra exp.

A MuCj (ice book) has Mephitic Cloud, Bolt of Cold, and Freezing Cloud. It's an easy combo and I didn't need to scum for xp.

Mummy's also benifit marginally more from Che because of their less than average stats. ie an increase from 10 to 25 is more benificial than an increase from 25 to 40.
