Having just lost a XL15 Ko to friendly fire from my own ballistomycete --- when is it a good idea to grow one?

Any big fight, just make sure it's not too close to you. I usually put them to the side and then move a bit back. It's also good vs high threat single targets since it confuses breathing targets and deals decent damage.

But won't you still be caught in the explosions, if you're near the thing you're fighting? Or am I misunderstanding how they work?
