General Help With DEWz Survival

Is there something I'm doing generally wrong, like not managing skills well, or bad tactics like being too aggressive with hand-to-hand combat with my fragile Deep Elf, or not upgrading my armor enough? Is there a way to avoid those situations where one wrong move = death, or to figure out what the one right move is?

As you can see, I can't seem to make it past XL 10-11. I've played many more games (too many, probably), but this performance is fairly typical. Just when I feel like the character is starting to get some good spells in combination with armor, weapons, jewelry, etc. I fall into a trap, drop 3 floors, and get hammered by nasties.

First of all, have you already won spellcaster games before? I know this is a very basic question, but DE chars are not newbie material.

Second, some of the things you have already typed out can be good points of improvement - skill management is very important, so let's focus on that. Do you use manual skilling or automatic? What is your typical skilling in the early levels like L1-6? How do you branch out from L6-10? In the three morgue texts you provided you had 8 or more skills being trained at the same time. This is bad practice - you generally want to focus on no more than 4 skills at a time in the early levels. Later on, taking several ranks in a new skill is much easier because there is more XP to invest.
You also mentioned getting aggressive in close combat, which is a problem. Close combat on a frail species like DE should be seen as a last resort, and not a necessarily good one at that. There are many ways to avoid bad situations outright, and some ways to manage them as they happen. Splatting with a stack of unused teleportation or fear scrolls, or something even more powerful like blink or summoning shows you may be too conservative with the consumables. They can definitely help if not save the day when you suddenly get shafted down 2-3 floors. Finally, unless you like challenge games, you should stay very far away from Qazlal with a DE char.

I did recently win with a DECj under Gozag. The partial chardump (under code tags) has the skill progression and spell and ability uses listed, and separated by level brackets. Perhaps those can help.

First of all, good on you for providing the character dumps while asking for feedback. There is a lot of information there. I am going to try not to nitpick the small stuff, and instead direct your attention to what I consider your three biggest causes of death:

1. I see that two out of three of these character dumps have multiple enemies in the final message log; centaur + tyrant leech, and Nergalle + cyclops. Crawl is a game of numbers, and the best way to swing the odds in your favor are to fight one monster at a time. In order to do this, you need to beware of making noise near unexplored tiles. Unexplored tiles are where the monsters are, and making noise draws them out, to the source of the noise (you). To prevent getting swarmed, what you should really do when you see a monster, is walk away into a big circle of explored tiles (preferably near stairs, since a staircase up is a great escape route as long as you use it BEFORE all monsters on screen are adjacent to you). When you're fighting in a big circle of explored tiles, you can make as much noise as you want, and that noise won't travel far enough to reach unexplored tiles. Now, this isn't possible in every situation (for example, against fast enemies, walking away lets them get closer or hit you), but 90% of the time this is the correct way to start a fight.

2. I see you tried to kill Snorg on D:12 without any lair exp. Crawl is not a game where you should kill everything you see. Some enemies, even one-on-one, are super strong and it is better not to take the risk. Again this boils down to crawl being a numbers game; even if your chance to die is only 10%, if you do ten separate and unrelated fights with a 10% chance to die, your overall chance to die in one of them will be 65%. So, you could say that caution is the greatest virtue in this game. If you see a sleeping centaur on D:2, it is best not to wake it up. If Rupert is at the edge of your line of sight, it is best just to walk to an upstairs and go down a different one. If an orc priest that you expected to kill, is now 2 tiles away with half health and has dropped you down to 30% health, you need to escape that situation (perhaps with a scroll of fear or blink).

3. I see that in all of these character dumps, you saw, but chose not to enter, the lair. The lair is generally the easiest part of the game and you should enter it as soon as you are able to, to essentially farm exp.

# of skills trained is much less important than simply ensuring that what you're training will be of benefit in the near or immediate future. I've had ~10 skills going at once relatively early and still had an easy run, but that's an outlier (caster/stabbing hybrid). Most cases you simply don't have that many different *useful* things to train.

Note that in one of those runs, you're still training conjurations (with emphasis) while being power-capped on stone arrow/all blasting spells you have at present. You don't have slow or blink memorized at all. Slow gets something of a bad rep, but it's useful for wizards. There are only a handful of things you can possibly encounter early that can still run you down while slowed, and most enemies can be outright kited freely. Getting some space with blink is useful too.

Similarly, in the other one bolt of fire is good, but you're training magic skills for stuff you already have easily castable. I know the fighting aptitude and base health are bad but you do still want some points in that.

One strategy comment:
You are choosing weak gods. Veh does nothing useful early. Qaz actively puts you in danger.
Consider picking the first strong god you find: Kiku, Hep, Gozag, Usk. They help immediately or shortly after joining. This is not exhaustive and there is some debate.

One tactics comment:
You die to speed 10 melee monsters. Consider walking away before they hit you. Run away/hide/stairs/pillar dance to regenerate MP. Empty your MP from range. If the monster is still alive, don’t melee, instead reset the fight.

One general suggestion:
DE is pretty unforgiving because of the low health. Wz is tricky because the skilling path may not be obvious. Consider other casters: HOFE, MfIE, GrEE, etc. to gain experience on easier combos.

Good stuff already said here. I'd just add that I've had most success with fragile caster types (Tengu, DE specifically) by training as much offense as possible as early as possible, and ignoring armour and dodging entirely for some time.
Wz might be a tad bit harder than other starting books for a very new person because the skills are spread out more. You may be interested in trying a FE or an EE first as an elf. One last thing would be not worrying too much about dying on D1-4, since your investment is very low at that point (both in terms of time and emotional attachment) -- splatting a level 1-5 DE is par for the course for a newer person. As others have mentioned, you may want to try someone other than a DE first if this is frustrating to you.

I don't understand this comment. I believe Vehumet is ideal for a beginner, as you get common-sense benefits without additional choice management, and 1 less skill to train. (Qaz of course is lovely for a beefy melee guy without much offensive AoE magic, but very challenging for a hang-in-the-back stealthy person who already has good AoE options with spending MP.)

There are two difficulties. One is that Vehumet doesn't provide immediate benefits on worship, but DE is extremely fragile and would ideally like help right away - compared to, say, Gozag where as soon as you walk away from the altar you can use your first Potion Petition.

The second is that Vehumet helps the character where they are already strong, rather than patching up their weaknesses - and DEWz's weaknesses need help because they are in the "not dying" department. DEWz has a flexible starting book, so has no immediate need for spell gifts, and good apts so is likely to already have a low miscast chance. The range extension is useful, but it's a long time in coming. In contrast, say, Usk patches up your fragility by rendering enemies unable to hurt you quite a lot of the time.

This has been said before and I disagree.

The main weakness of a wizard (up to Lair) is not having good level 5 spells. Vehm solves this weakness.

Further, a Wz^Vehm should be playing such that they are never adjacent to an enemy. Vehm helps here by his wizz powers (allowing higher level spells). As such Vehm makes "not dying" easier (in the sense of less hassle, because fewer retreats are necessary).

As a bonus Vehm also makes the situation where you can't progress without using items/piety (because all available branches are too hard for your character) almost impossible.

Quoted is a pipe dream, and it's why Vehumet is not considered a strong god. Lots of things before, during, and after lair are either faster than you or have ranged attacks. Low HP and flimsy AC/defenses in general are a big price to pay for using even level 5 magic at this point. Regardless you will sometimes have stuff next to you that can kill you in 3 hits and you're going to have to react and do something about it appropriately. This is doable w/o a god to help with those scenarios, but it's easier if you do have one.

Vehumet is fun though.

Comparing with an old MuWz^Vehm, it's true I did about as much hand-to-hand fighting with monsters as the OP did. So I overstated what a wizard can/should hope to achieve.
I meant something closer to "a Wz^Vehm should be playing such that they are never forced to fight an enemy in melee," but even that would take a whole paragraph to fix all the caveats.

Was the spirit of what I meant really unclear?

You’re better off framing that statement in terms of ‘trying to avoid fighting enemies in melee range’. Which is true for many non-melee weapon characters.

Edit: Some monsters are best fought at close range (centaurs etc.). The real objective is to minimise taking damage...

The problem is that it isn’t possible to avoid completely. So you need to prepare an answer before it happens.

Spiny frogs, black mambas, blink frogs and wyverns will spawn in Lair. They can be next to stairs or around a blind corner.

For the record I don’t think rushing to lvl 5 conjurations is the most successful strategy for Wz, and probably not even a good one.

Seems to me what we have here is a bad, meme-y gameplan. As others have said Vehumet is bad in general and has a very bad early game. It's absolutely true that you should learn to play a number of strong gods and aim to take them early, but as a newer player it might be easier to have a set gameplan. I suggest you always go kiku and use the pain brand ability on a dagger as early as possible. That should put you on a reliable path to dealing with anything going into the mid game.

About not meleeing things, you should be able to escape most of the things these guys are talking about with summon imp and conjure flame, but kiku will give you everything you need to keep monsters off you.

Also, you're overtraining spellcasting.
This is where mechanical excellence and one-thousand four-hundred horsepower pays off.

I'll try to defend my position in a way which benefits the OP.

You've got mephitic cloud for centaurs, orc wizards, orc priests, and anything poison-susceptible. Note you need to limit the distance to ~3 tiles for this to work well, but the early D has plenty of choke points.
You've got conjure flame to create a wall between you and any melee enemies. Very cheap to use in the Dungeon, because of 1-tile corridors. If you're below half mp when you see a non-trivial threat, you can just block it off and walk out of it's LOS whilst maintaining LOS with the fire cloud. (This works best with a little stealth.) You can also safely engage a group of melee enemies by blocking them of with fire and then using a spear/sling/whatever or even magic dart if you can spare the mp.
You've got Imps. Not only can these take out most pre-lair threats by themselves (including almost all pre-lair uniques), they combine well with mephitic cloud and can be used to let you run away. Can also be used to create a gap for CF.
You've got blink to get out of situations where you made a positioning mistake. It's also amazing when you've isolated a monster via stair-dancing. In that situation you're almost guaranteed to be able to create a gap, or just create distance.
Often you can just walk back to the nearest stairs and go back up. It's very rare many monsters can follow. If there are many, you have Blink. Even if a monster you were dragging along damages you (eg because it is a little faster than you), you now have it isolated from all it's friends, and you should be able to deal with it with the above tricks.

Early in the dungeon (before you've leveled up enough), this strategy can fail due to adders. They can usually be dealt with using magic dart, or random potions or scrolls or wands you're carrying.
Rarely a ranged rPois enemy will show up. That's what consumables are for.
You probably won't be seeing cyclops (high HD -> not as good for mephitic cloud) before you've had a chance to get into Lair. If you do you can tempt it to throw all it's rocks from the edge of LOS.
In lair you do get Spiny frogs, black mambas. If you drag them up stairs and blast them with your best (Vehm-given) conjurations, they won't stand a chance. You take some damage, and are in melee range, but you've got good burst damage. This is what I meant with "fight an enemy in melee" rather than "fighting enemies in melee range". You can also block them of with a wall of fire, though this usually needs 2-3 casts of CF, and you'll need to tank a few hits whilst they fry.
Blink frogs shouldn't be a problem because, stairs.

Wizard is very strong in the early game. You don't need any help pre-lair.

BTW, though not mentioned above because it doesn't help you control the dungeon, magic dart is very nice for popcorn. And if I don't have access to higher-level spells (with eg Sif) I'd train some short blades for stabbing.

Point is, Veh isn't doing much to keep monsters out of melee range until you get the spell range extension, unless they happen to offer a spell that's just right. DEWz's glass jaw means you might well die before then.

I think Veh is okay, just like DE is okay and Wz is okay. The sum result is an average combo, so I definitely don't recommend it for inexperienced players. This is especially true for Wz. All 4 elementalist starts are much more straightforward and easy-to-use.

However, all this strategy stuff is secondary. The main mistake that I see is bad tactics. Take the first example game. You are standing next to a berserking Snorg (who you probably shouldn't fight in the first place). You had summon imp, but you didn't use it. You had blink to get out of melee, but you didn't use it (it seems like you didn't even learn it). Just standing there and lamely shooting bolts of fire while you are ripped apart is madness.
