Dumb AM ranger question 5 -buying Armor

Have bought weapons before and unenchanted gear for empty slots. But what about buying enchanted or artifact gear? Seems a big risk without any idea of the enchantment.

Well, it's only a "big risk" if you don't have a remove curse scroll, or there's something else that will definitely benefit you that you could spend the money on instead.

Look at it this way, money does nothing to help you win unless you spend it on something, first priority are all the things that will *definitely* help you win, second priority are all the things that *might* help you win (like unidentified equipment slot replacements that might or might not be upgrades)

Note also that a subtle-but-important way to increase your chances of winning is to buy things that are useless, but buying them will identify some things earlier (So for example it's a good idea to buy a potion of degeneration from a shop if you haven't identified it yet, because buying it will identify it without a scroll and without quaff-iding it)

I agree, money's only worth something if there's something worth buying. Generally unidentified armour gives worse vallue-for-money then identified stuff (except unidentified potions and scrolls, which are cheap for some reason,) but if there are no good identified items for sale it is worth buying unidentified items.

I agree that the expected value of unidentified artefacts is fairly low, but the possible maximum value is very high. Spend the money when you have it on types that you would use if they turn out to be good, e.g. don't buy a robe on a heavy armour dude, etc.
