AFAIK, Haunt is very good, but you don't actually kill powerful creatures with it. It's a great tool to pester Orb of Fire and the like, while you're preparing for the real nuke spell.

I see. Since I came across swiftness and Shroud, I've been trying to keep them both on. There's a way to edit a file to put up a reminder when spells like that fade isn't there? Also is there one to make my summons stop spamming the shit out of my message screen? I know I've heard it mentioned before. Lol and if MuSu of Sif wasn't enough of a clusterfuck, I can throw in some Summon Butterflies at any point if a line is broken to my me I think this is definitely a strong (at least 3 rune) build. Just gotta remember to surround myself with ice beasts and swift up as I go down stairs, and but out if it looks bad.

I have shoals and snake pits. I was thinking I'd finish the lair or make L7, maybe do some of orc, maybe a bit of the dungeon (but I'd rather not it's scary out there o.o) then try snake pits. I almost did it before but a naga guardian 2hit my heavy EV SpBe with a great axe of electrocution. I've heard shoals is quite a bit harder, would attempting vaults be better before shoals?

From what I've read on Sif's channeling you want to stop at 4 or 8 invo as it goes by multiples of 4.

I wouldn't do Vault:1-7 before Shoals:1-4, though I'd definitely do Vault:1-7 before Shoals:5. Vaults is nearly always harder than the equivalent level of the main dungeon, because it has the same monster set but a more open layout (very, very few characters like open spaces). It does have the entrance to the laughably easy (except for the final level) Crypt branch, though.

Anymore as in .9? I decided to play the "latest stable" for a bit because I was getting raped by things I didn't expect/know very well in trunk and I am paranoid about crashing (I think it would be a good idea to get my first win on stable)

I just cleared out the lair expz. I only almost died when I had a relatively low swarm (5 or so) and summoned a demon stupidly, who OF COURSE was unfriendly and NATURALLY summoned 5 more demons while I was running from a hephalump. Well it wasn't so much an almost death but I got to probably 30-35% hp which does not make me happy on naked summoner.

As for open spaces, well.. I LOVE open spaces. Orc first though

Also @bobross: I remember you were wondering about a summoning spell. I tried summon demon and I like it a lot. The unfriendlys really aren't that often. I HIGHLY recommend you dont start summoning them until you have a large swarm of something else to target down any unfriendlys, as unlikely as they are, or THEIR summons. With channeling you can easily replace your first scrap army (hounds / ice beasts) with demons (having enough demons to kill bad demons) and get a large demon train going as some of them will summon more friendly demons. It takes a bit to get started on a new level but I almost always do it on the stairs it seems unbeatable. Just remember to immediately kill all mean demons ASAP (I rarely see any) and friendly summons are guaranteed friendly I believe (like when your nice demon summons more nice demons)

Also isn't there supposed to be some loot at L8 or something? Or a harder room? L8 seemed ridiculously easy except for a small room full of elephants with an annoying corridor.

Those skills were at two because it makes early game slightly easier when I was playing slightly like an enchanter with curare

Make sure you at least have repel, if not deflect, missiles. Centaurs/Yaktaurs will rape you from afar otherwise once at the lower half of the dungeon. Also, if you can find a Necronomicon, or if Sif grants you an artifact spell book containing Haunt, spam it. It makes everything except the Tomb/Pan/Zot a breeze.

I gave Slime a try with my MuNe Haunter of Sif and it worked like a charm. Now to clear out Elf. Still haven't done Vault:8 because that entryway is pretty nasty for a weak caster I always stair danced whenever I got there (always with melee classes before).

No Alistair's Intoxication! I did Vault:8 after the Tomb, actually, with ~20 abominations + Mephitic Cloud and Sif's mana channeling.

Haunt made both Slime and Elven Hall vault pretty easy. I did have to bug out twice in Slime, but since the RJ seems to not regen at all I wasn't that bad. I bugged out once on the Elven Hall vault when a blademaster chewed threw all of my summons and moved in the same turn. Other than that it wasn't bad at all, just spam Haunt at the edge of my vision, summon a demon or shadow creature for close in support and Sif Channel.

Vault:8 wasn't too bad either. I took down a strong force of Shadow Creatures around me for early defense, blinked down a side tunnel then used a combination of Haunt (blockers/crowd control) and Demons/Shadow Creatures (Damage dealers). Once the break in was complete the rest was trivial except for one Gold Dragon that was waiting right around a corner. Blinked away and ganged up Haunts and SC on him.

D is clear and I'm thinking of taking on Tomb now that I've got Summon Dragon. They really rock. They last quite a while (200+ turns -ish) so summonig up a few then Sif Channel isn't as frustrating as with Demons or SC. Every few dozen turns I'll summon up another one and before long I've got a pack of dragons chillin' with me.

I actually started one for fun yesterday as a transmuter. Fulsome distillation and evaporate/sticks to snakes WILL keep you alive until you can find Kiku, and fulsome will give you a huge head start on his first book, enough to learn everything when you get it. This start is TOO EASY provided you don't get 1-hit by Ijyb with a wand of fire. I suppose I could have blinked when I saw him, but I don't generally immediately retreat from Ijyb when I have 5million potions, evaporate, and full mana. Still though, After that splat I made it to and cleared the lair easy. I think I'll drop Kiku eventually and pick up Sif. I like this start a lot (only train transmutations up to 3 or 4) except all the damn potions can be a bit tedious. Still, you AND you pets are immune to most of the clouds you can produce anyway. Ezpz

Oh ya, definitely. The above char was a MuNe going to go Kiku, but I found an early Transmuter book sitting right next to a Stalker book. I figured what the hell, memmed Fulsome+Evap and went Sif right off the bat. So far he's doing well. Cleared one of the hells. Kind of worried about the rest. Didn't a handful of Pan levels before hopping over to the Abyss.

Was considering giving Zig a try but a run in WizMode with a seriously beefed up character made me realize how much of a noob I am. I got to about Zig:3 before I realized I wouldn't be able to do this on my real character lol.

Ya it seems to me if you're going to go Kiku anyway, might as well pick up a different book guaranteed at the start especially if it's going to help you train necro anyway. Unless I wanna go hardcore necromancy I like to start as something else. Wizard has more utility but you have work for some necro. Good start on summoning for haunt though.

In other news I'm either getting better at this game or at mummies (or both) because starting mummies is easy in most cases. Just use floor trash and whatever you start with for early game, then pick up kiku if you don't have the books to carry you (or if you want to go necro anyway, which is always a good choice for mummies) then maybe sif. If feeling confident skip kiku. I still haven't won yet but I've got some promising characters!

Nice, how is Summon Greater Demon working out for you?

I've found that I rarely cast Summon Demon or Shadow Creatures anymore now that I've got Summon Dragon and Haunt. I'm currently working on Fire/Conj so that I can get Fire Storm to give Ziggurat a try hehe.

Since Mummies have some trouble with experience (their horrendous aptitudes notwithstanding), perhaps switching to Ashenzari for Pan/Abyss and Ziggurat raiding is a viable strategy? Piety gain is ridiculous in the Abyss. What about getting 27 in all the crucial skills and go for it? By that time cursing every item shouldn't be a big problem.

Here's my current MuNe. Will be heading to Gehena after work for Rune #9. I visited Pan and the 4 levels I did weren't really any problem at all with the Haunt/Dragon combo, so I'm going to try for a full 15 rune win. Might as well see all the sights, right?

I'm in lab class now I'll look at your char in more detail later but i think of you're going for the whole necro/summ thing it's better to go necro first (or second if u picked a different start) BEFORE heavy summoning. I went summon first and am suffering very hard from lack of exp. I think pan/zig is a little too far past my understanding of this game I'm just trying to 3rune.

Oh sif please give me a dragon summon spell. I will love you forever. I better double check that store in shoals2 but I'm pretty sure I haven't seen it yet

Its not really too bad... I like pushing Nec hard because Haunt seems to be so much better than Pois/Ice Clouds for mid-late game lockdown and can be made castable just as early. Since I learned Haunt I really haven't killed anything myself and hardly damaged anything. I haven't been feeling the effects of low exp all that much. I've got Bolt of Fire as a DD spell and Ice Cloud because it is smite targetable and has a nice symmetry with many undead rC.

Got another MuSu going. I really like this build I basically have macro
F1=aa
F2=spamable summon spell
F3=stronger summon spell
F4=haunt/other special

I rotate between o F2F2 o F1F1 o F3F1 etc
This method always keeps a cloud of pets. I put in more F3s if its close quarters and ore F2s if in the open. (until a fight) then whatever is appropriate. This game I will NOT be reading the Grand Grimoire for ANY REASON. I will not attempt any summon spells with less than "Very Good" success rate. I will not accidentally forget my spells misclicking because of the above macros. I will not summon demons without a pack/abjure. I will not underestimate and splat in the Abyss.

This is my path to success (hopefully)

I've been trying to run Mummies countless times since their lack of a food clock is something I enjoy a lot. Gone with many possible backgrounds, even melee ones. The crappy aptitudes are really bad and you can't scum for exp after a while on each floor or the OOD mobs will get you so the only way you can play a melee mummy is to hope for an uber ring of slaying and some artifact weapon, which frankly isn't the way this game should be played. The best advice is obviously the one that the game gives; Play mummies as casters! I recently got my first mummy to near lvl 20. Began as a Wz. Worshipped Vehumet. He didn't give me any f-ing books. I found/bought some books though. Had great fun with Olgreb's Toxic Radiance + Mephitic Cloud + Imp Army guarding me in Orc 1-4. I also had a trident of venom to add some extra poison to tough mobs. My regular weapon was a staff of energy. I got fireball to excellent. I don't remember where and when I died, though.

Eventually I died. Apparently "teleport scroll" means "-ctele+blink" because 3 brought me within 2 steps of a LICH I was trying to avoid.. Also teleporting (randomly) next to a silent spectre is not much fun on a summoner.

That was so unfair! I stumbled onto an awake Erolcha. That turn I used was to blink away but apparently it wasn't fast enough.. There goes my next promising summoner

This time I started a MuAK to GUARANTEE I will not have troubles in the abyss. I did it out of frustration but I'm just now clearing the lair and it seems pretty solid. Not eating means TONS of corpses for Lug and really the build has plenty of utility. See something scary? Blink away and run. Too scary/ don't want to deal with it? Banish it. The whole not eating thing leaves room for plenty of banishing (I banished probably 5 or 6 electric eels and still remained at *****)

I don't know what corrupt level is for or what it even does but banish and blink seem pretty damn good. Also I have NO IDEA what time to turn off invocations with this I guess banish gets more effective as you go up in inv? Just found an amulet of guardian spirit. Mu resistances are helpful when worshiping a god who doesn't gift. I never play melee builds so idk if I'm doing it right but here it is:

Corrupt level creates a huge block of Abyss terrain around you - along with a nice horde of Abyss creatures. They'll be neutral to you. Not quite as good as if they were friendly, but you can lure other monsters into their zone and watch them fight it out.

I guess this is to be used on levels that are excessively difficult? I don't like using such a large chunk of piety though

On the few occasions I've tried Lugonu, I've used it mostly as a panic button - when I felt threatened and needed a buffer zone between me and some horrible monsters.

I did this. It's an AMAZAZING panic button. Also you can lure scary monsters into it.

In other news.. Erolcha is waiting just outside the lair next to my next runner. I swear to god if she banishes me to the abyss I'm going to have a seizure..

Why so serious? As a Lugonu worshiper, you have an automatic "Get Out Of The Abyss Free" card...

If you can stick allies between you and her she shouldn't be able to banish you, or if you get your MR up high enough.
