how to defeat this frost giant safely?

I have a TeWz^Ash in an ice cave, and I'm trying to figure out how to safely attack a frost giant. I'm pretty sure he's the last monster in here. The problem is he can take me out in 2 hits / ice blasts, (I'm wearing a cursed amulet of harm). He hasn't seen me yet, so I can still respec if I want.

I've been stuck with my starting spells for most of the game. I recently got access to the spells {battlesphere, force lance, flame tongue, throw frost, Dazzling Spray}, of which I have memorized the first 2. (I got them from a scroll of acquirement which I found in the ice cave.)

Re: how to defeat this frost giant safely?

I wonder how and why a Te^Ash has a -2 cursed club as weapon.

Anyway I don't think you're going to find anything worthwhile in the loot at the end of the cave worthy of the very high risk of dying right here and the consumables necessary to kill him.

If you want to gamble, I'd quaff agility, use wand of cloud and acid hoping to kill him with them.
Another way could be to use conjure flame + force lance but I suspect it less favorable.
screw it I hate this character I'm gonna go melee Gastronok

Re: how to defeat this frost giant safely?

That club was the first weapon I saw in the dungeon, even before I joined Ash. I found Ash on D:1, and never got round to uncursing equipment, because I was trying to conserve cursing scrolls. I have 6 now, so I could afford to spend some. I don't have anything else I'd like to uncurse though.

The reason I'm so keen to defeat the frost giant, is that I really want to find more spell books. I guess I could use a digging charge to check out the loot without fighting him.

Re: how to defeat this frost giant safely?

Yeah, you don't have any good way to safely kill him. If you had enough evocation to reasonably paralyze him, you might be able to paralyze him long enough to have him sit in a cloud and die (with some acid wand shots to speed up the process), but I don't like your odds there (What's it say that you chances of paralysis are with the wand? Probably not good enough)

If you'd earlier gone the hexes route you might have had enough spellpower to confuse him, but obviously that's going to be less reliable than paralyze with your current skills.

Re: how to defeat this frost giant safely?

Same opinions as Nago. Why cursed clubs ans dex ring while sitting on scrolls of remove course?
Anyway, I wouldn't try this encounter. Too dangerous.
If you really want the loot, I would recommend scroll of blinking to land near the mace (or morningstar, I play ASCII) grab the stuff quickly and another blink scroll to get out.

I would use digging if I really wanted the loot, personally.

Re: how to defeat this frost giant safely?

I've used digging+scrying to get a look at the loot, and there is indeed a book. I've tried to lure him out using a scroll of noise + shouting (so that I can take the book without fighting him), but he keeps returning to the loot area.

Edit:
Eventually I lured him whilst keeping him in LOS. He was much closer than I intended TBH. I took 2 bolts of cold to the face, and quaffed Heal Wounds both times. I also spend another digging charge to make the shortcut to the book, and then a scroll of teleportation to get away.

Still, I'm now able to learn Freezing Cloud and Bolt of Cold, so I think it was worth it. I'll need to experiment to see how well scrying works with Freezing Cloud :)

Is it normal for monsters to keep returning to their spawn points?

Re: how to defeat this frost giant safely?

Tengu can move faster than 10 aut monsters and giants are not immune to poison. Giant can be pulled a good distance away from the item vault, mephitic kited until confused (you can cast cloud then back off, enemies often walk into mephitic clouds unlike direct damage ones), then one digging charge can create a circle to jack the loot.

It's also possible to get confusion on it, maintain distance and use battlesphere + darts. There are 3 potions of magic available if mp becomes an issue.

Paralysing would probably also have worked after reading a scroll of vulnerability.

You could also carefully lure him allll the way back to the entrance, then teleport.

That's probably my vote, if you had both of those. You could have made some noise to lure him out then try to pull off this combo at long range. The advantage is that if it fails, you haven't necessarily fatally committed.

I still like mephitic fishing at near max range until confusion --> battlesphere. No need to let it get close, tedious but unlikely to die this way. Vulnerability --> para can still see para fail and the giant doesn't need a lot of hits to kill in this situation.
