How can I see what killed me? Last Char was at full 50 health and died in one turn and it says I took 16 Damage.

Click on your signature and scroll down to the recent games.
Unfortunately, CAO doesn't update those player pages as quickly as CKO does so consider changing servers if you can.
Another option is to go directly into your morgue folder on CAO, which is: http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/DeepDeath/

I looked it over and it says I took 6 damage before the 16. That's not even half of 50. (50 -16 -6 = -11) must be that new math there teaching now

If you look up slightly in the log you'll see that he managed to hit you twice with the wand of acid after you did your last attack, a spear attack with no polearms skill takes slightly more than one standard monster turn. He got two turns after your last attack, and used both of them to zap you with the wand, the first wand attack clearly did more damage than the second (which was enough to finish you) (Bolded relevant bits for ease of noticing)

"Wand of acid (6)" means it was a wand with 6 charges, not that you took 6 damage from it.

There is only one !, so it's from 7 to 17 points.

I wonder if creating a browser extension to automatically convert the mysterious symbols into known data would be convincing enough to add an option to crawl to simply display more values.

We've been asking for a straightforward values display for ages, I wouldn't count on it. I'd use it if you made one though.

I would prefer if the exclamation point represented a percentage of total HP. Something like:

That wouldn't be sufficient, since you can also attack monsters for more damage than their health (and the player can be overkilled as well, although only once). We're going to need to go to !!!!!!!

Note you can edit your RC to have it save more lines of message history if you want to see further back. You were hit twice by the acid wand, and made 4 attacks, all of which resulted in zero damage. That's crawl combat for you
