Tricky early-game weapon choice

XL 11 Human^Gozag, using +2 short sword of electrocution at 6.0 skill.

Should I stick with the short sword for now, or switch to one of these ranged weapons (currently untrained):
+5 hunting sling of flaming
+4 shortbow of flaming

Or buy one of these?
378 gold a runed lajatang
279 gold a steaming broad axe
294 gold a runed glaive

I have 44/9/0 defenses thanks to Lear's Hauberk.

I would go for lajatang. You don't need shield with that AC on D:8.
Underestimated: cleaving, Deep Elf, Formicid, Vehumet, EV
Overestimated: AC, GDS

Another vote for lajatang, you can immediately read your 4?EW and use it until the end of the game...

Needing only 14 skill for mindelay will let you plenty of options for defenses, Evocations or whatever...

Re: Tricky early-game weapon choice

I'd milk the short sword a bit longer, buy the broad axe, and start training to use axes. If the axe is good enough you might just start using it sooner than later. You can swap to the hunting sling with a shield at low or no skill for a few various situations. It may be more useful if you put a few points into throwing. I wouldn't worry too much about those however, training the axe and shield up is a higher priority. With this high AC setup, you also need to be pretty concerned with having good coverage of your resists since you won't evade much. Lajatang have good stats, but they are two-handed so they come with a sacrifice, but mostly the reason for the broad axe is that you'll find cleaving is more useful on the whole than a weapon only made for 1v1 fights. The entire game wants to surround you with enemies. Relying on kiting and corridors isn't a sound strategy overall.

Meh: the +2 broad axe of Courage {pain, Dex+4}

@svendre, I completely agree, long-term.

Actually really what I wanted to know was how that sling and shortbow compared to each other, for early-game use.

The sling is definitely better if you're using a shield :)

Re: Tricky early-game weapon choice

I ended up switching to the sling through the first rune and Elf, then broad axes the rest of the way. http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/rast/ ... 091505.txt
