DS mutation quiz question

I have a Ds game going on, and I had yellow scales 2 mutation. In Slime I got frail, to get rid of that I quaffed a mut pot, and it upgraded my yellow scales 2 to 3. WTF.
Question: what happens next? Will a permanent YS3 come replace the temporary one? Or does it stay as it is, meaning that I lose the permanent one?

Eventually it will become permanent. Until then, more mutation could drop you back down to scales 2.
