DEFE...What to do next?

So...where should I go next? Its been about four years since I played...

Also, what spells would you recommend? ultimately I'm going for firestorm, but right now I want something with good killing power that doesn't wake everything up in the level like fireball does...

Any advice? I have a LOT of spells available to learn, but I don't really know which ones to use... Iskenderuns seems quite unreliable to me? And bolt of lightning scares me.

My only advise is not to worry about noise so much. Just blast everything to smithereens.

My advice is to stop training spellcasting and fire magic as well. Instead get more fighting and dodging.

If you want a spell to kill resistant enemies and do not like Iskenderun's blast then I suggest fulminant prism. But there are not so many fire resistant enemies now, and you also have wands.

Since you trained so much fire magic hope that you find bolt of fire, but have a secondary plan if you do not.

You may not want to use noisy spells if you enter an open level or when you cannot retreat fast. However, in most situations you can simply lure the enemies to safe terrain, kill it with a noisy spell, and then leave the area to rest mana points away from the noise location. Noisy spells still can be very useful if you can judge when you do not want to use them (mostly open terrain or far away from stairs).

For some reason, you never learnt conjure flame. I've never seen an FE that didn't learn conjure flame. Please learn it.

In general, as a DEFE, you just want to blast everything from a distance. Fire spells are good for most of the monsters; for the rest, you want some kind of Earth spell or pure conjurations. If you're worried about noise, use sticky flame more. Set the monster on fire and back away from it.

Train more fighting. You have enough spell training for now. Learn Ozocubu's Armour.

I used to learn conjure flame as a matter of course, as you say. However now I don't tend to worry so much about it. I find I'm either blowing stuff up in groups very quickly, or positioning myself and aggro'ing correctly so I never need to worry about blocking monsters paths to get away. Having said that, I have learnt it in my current game; But I have never actually used it looking at my current morgue file!

I'm not denying its usefulness, and I am almost certainly "doing it wrong".... but I do manage to get by without it.

Sticky flame is my favourite spell until fireball. And even then I often prefer it. I throw stones at a monster then back away for 8-10 tiles letting it chase me. Then I just wait on the spot until its close and set it on fire. This is how I avoid needing conjure flame, I tend to only draw aggro from 1 or 2 monsters at a time. My current game I have used sticky flame 300 times. Its tricky to use this tactic on a completely unexplored floor though.

I never used to train any fighting, but this is something I've started doing now. No substitute for raw HP! Thanks for all the advice :)
