DsTm of Okawaru, 3rd rune advice

This is much farther than I usually get on a Transmuter, and I'm completely unsure which 3rd rune to try for.

I doubt I can survive Vaults 4 unless I get lucky and teleport to a quiet spot. But I have no idea which of the other runes to try for.

One thing to note is that I'm playing on my own version of Crawl, with a couple of Transmuter items I'm working on (and a not-yet-playable Shapeshifter race), including the gloves of the claw you see on my character (+4 to hit with unarmed and don't meld into any shape).

Any advice would be appreciated.

On topic re: advice, You might want to delay the third rune a bit and go clear out Elf:2, Crypt, and Depths to fixup your skills a little bit. I guess your plan with that character was to rush Dragonform, but for the love of Xom please don't ever neglect Fighting like that when you are playing a character whose offense comes from hitting things. Fighting acts as a melee damage multiplier and boosts your max HP.

Since you already have Dragonform online, if you skill your fighting up to around the level of your UC, your dude will steamroll the rest of the game. Just don't die until then; Elf to 2 and Crypt will serve as a good platform for you to get there safely. (Don't fuck around with the Elf:$ vault, it's a great place to splat for characters with low max HP.)

After that, I'd go do either Vaults:$ or take the rune from Slime if you find rCorr. ?summoning to block the corridors prevents your character from being swarmed by spawns and makes short work of The Royal Jelly -- you can also cheese TRJ by setting off an ?immolation bomb.

Re: Vaults:$ tactics, duvessa has a good post here that covers the basics. Basically, you want to prebuff, read ?mapping, and immediately move away from the stairs to go fight in whichever quadrant has the safest terrain. You can stairdance the welcome party until a Warden comes onscreen if you want to thin it out a little bit.


Honestly, your character is strong enough to clear the game already if piloted skillfully, but your win will be much safer if you pickup some more Fighting first.

For this character I would suggest that you try for the Abyssal rune. You have a lot of sources of teleportation, a way to consistently output a lot of damage, and have good defenses. Trying to safeport V:5 is almost certainly going to cause you to die, as it's packed with monsters, some of which can put a sentinel's mark on you. I like staying on Abyss:3 to get the rune myself, but your results may vary: lower rate of monster spawn but it may take longer to find the rune.

Two quick observations. Learn Animate Skeleton. It's an impossibly OP spell for how easy it is to cast, and if you animate everything you reasonably can your game will get much easier. Also, you need WAY MORE fighting skill. Unless you have some other compelling needs I would turn everything off and focus on fighting until it's at least 12 or so.

It's available at: https://github.com/Bleyddyn/crawl. Master branch has all three of my changes, but you'd have to build it yourself.

Two of you so far recommended Fighting, but I've read several places not to waste any XP in fighting. Which I admit sounded wrong to me, but I figured "what do I know?", I've never won as a Transmuter, and not very often as anything.

I'll concentrate on Fighting while I clear a few of the things out that you mentioned, then have another rethink.

Excuse me? What? Who told you this? What monster wants to see the world burn like that‽

If anything, you should skimp your weapon skill early in the game in favor of Fighting, since Fighting is one of the primary sources of increased HP as well as having an effect on accuracy and damage of every melee attack. Focusing Fighting until skill level 10 or so before ever once turning on a weapon skill is a common tactic.

I always heard "Turn on Fighting on turn 1 on every character, never ever turn it off unless you max it" and following the spirit of that advice has made me a much better player.

This is very bad advice.
Yes, you shouldn't completely ignore Fighting. No, you shouldn't train it at XL1 either. No, you shouldn't train it before your weapon skill. No, you absolutely shouldn't train it to 10 before your weapon skill. That is like starting a wizard and training your dodging skill to 10 before memorizing any of your spells.

Fwiw, the conventional wisdom used to be not to train fighting. I'm not sure why, or if the skill changed, but as someone who started playing in .9 or so, that was most certainly the case.

The way to think of fighting, IMHO, is to pretend it's down at the bottom of that first column. It's a defensive skill like armour, dodging, and shields. Vitally important, but probably after you've gotten your "kill stuff" skill under control.

As to the matter at hand, I'd go for abyss. I think you can probably handle Vaults:5, but with powered by death, powered by pain, AND an abundance of teleportation spells, I think Abyss is the way to go.

I'm not sure I want to get too into it, but I do recall getting a lot of advice to keep fighting low and not to invest a lot of exp. I'm seeing a lot more emphasis on it lately; if your recollection differs, I will defer, because you know a ton about this game and are very active in the community.

I like training fighting with a fairly high priority, even over weapon skill - especially early game. The reasons why can vary, but mainly what I find is that early on, no matter if you plan to use maces or axes or whatever throughout the majority of the game, you're often better off using a dagger or short blade early on (with a brand like venom for example). A branded dagger even not trained isn't going to take a long time to swing, thus you aren't committing to over a turn to swing it. They are also accurate at a time when you aren't very accurate. Short blades seem more abundant early game. Later on, when you find a branded version of the weapon type you'd ideally like to use, or at least just past the early dungeon - that is the time to start training the weapon skills. The other thing is that if you hold off for a little bit initially, you may find a good artefact weapon (of unknown type) or perhaps some other thing (invis, boots of assassin or other game changers) and you won't haven't committed and wasted as much xp (if any) to any particular weapon type. The investment in fighting will always be useful.

The other reason already stated and fairly obvious is the benefit from added survivability in terms of health. Your survivability is often tested more than once per turn, but your offense typically will only affect one source of incoming damage.

It stuck around longer than that though. People were saying not to use shields as late as 0.14 in some places.

The conventional wisdom was probably "don't train fighting until you have a good weapon skill level for your weapon (except the slowest base types)" and that is still true pretty much.

My criteria for Vaults vs Abyss vs Slime is:
Vaults: character is stupidly strong in all regards. Regen is a bonus.
Abyss: character has regen. Being stealthy and fast are bonuses.
Slime: character can kill slime monsters and win a though fight against the royal jelly (rCorr mandatory obv)

My criteria for Vaults vs Abyss vs Slime is:
Vaults: always, because it is the single most fun level in the whole game.

Objectively thinking, Slime would probably be better for most characters who have rCorr. If you can handle V:5, you should be able to handle Slime.
I could consider Abyss for characters who are very stealthy and/or are with Ash, and are for some reason scared of V:5 and Slime.

But I always go for the silver rune. In fact, as I always do Depths, Elf and Crypt first, my character always feels strong enough for V:5 anyway.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll keep it in mind for future games, unfortunately, I ended up dying on level 2 of the Slime Pits. Got confused by one of the eyes, then more showed up and I never got unconfused long enough to escape.
