Ashenzari, equipment slots, and general advice (GnWz)

I'm playing a game as GnWz^Ashenzari. If I understand correctly, the way to get piety with Ashenzari is to explore wearing cursed equipment. The Wiki says "You have four equipment categories: armour, weapon, shield and jewellery. A category is considered "partially bound" if more than half the slots available (for your species, but including later effects such as Ru's Sacrifice Hand, the macabre finger necklace, or Lear's hauberk) contain cursed equipment, and "fully bound" if all slots available contain cursed equipment."

So, playing Gnoll, for jewellery there are three slots: two rings and one amulet. But what counts as slots for weapons and shield? With two hands, to get to partially bound I'd need more than one cursed weapon equipped, i.e. there's no way to be partially bound in the weapon (or shield) category (for a Gnoll)? Will using a two-handed cursed weapon make the weapon category fully bound?

Is it also correct then that you can't be even partially bound in both weapon and shield?

And I'd need three cursed armour items to get to partially bound in armour?

Look at the table lower down on the Ash wiki page for better information. Hand slots are special, kind of. They're either bound or not, and their boost depends on what kind of weapon you're wielding (ie - if you're using a two-hander, you get a bigger boost than with a one-hander.) I don't think "partially" or "fully" matters except in places where you actually have multiple slots - jewelry and armor.

Gnolls need 3 pieces of cursed armor to be partially bound, correct. (Headgear, cloak/scarf, gloves, boots, body armor.)

Thanks, I don't know how I missed that table. I guess then that the bound levels listed there affects both the piety gained and the skill boost level at 2 or more piety.

Rings and spells

I have two remove curse scrolls and am thinking of using them to switch out one of my rings (a +4 ring of dexterity).

Available choices are:
* +2 ring of protection {AC+2}
* +5 ring of slaying

Which would you choose, and why? Or should I save my scrolls?

Also, this is my first character that casts spells. Which spells (of the ones in my library) should I learn? Animate skeleton or Animate dead? Anything else?

As for weapons, my best "generic" weapon right now should be the fustibalus (thanks to the gloves or archery), right?

(I guess I'm off to Orc next, hoping to find more spell books and something that gives me some rPois/rF/rC.)

Of your spelllibrary animate dead\skeletons are the only spells really good but allies interact badly with ranged combat - at best, they are an annoying interface screws - so it's up to you if you want to memorize those spells, as a a solid wall of meat shield is one of the best thing to have, but also ranged combat is very very strong.

Personally I'd memorize the spell(s) and cast them only in the case some strong zombie wold be animated.

Hehe, I just took a +2 scale mail of poison resistance and a +3 broad axe of venom from a skeletal warrior on D:11. :) (I wonder where he came from? I thought I had cleared that level...)

Actually, compared to my +4 ring mail the above scale mail gives me {AC-1, EV-3, Stealth-1, +rPois}, so I'll just keep it for when I need poison resistance and/or find a scroll of enchant armour. And at my current skill level (9.0), the broad axe isn't much better damage-wise than my +2 rapier of venom (22.8 vs 21 median damage per 10 auts, I think) - except of course I can use it to poison a bunch of monsters at once if I ever find myself surrounded. :twisted:

You could get portal projectile, though.

And there's nothing wrong with standing back as zombies melee things, and then start shooting once the zombies die.

I've been trying out Animate dead a bit. Those Zombies/Skeletons are awfully weak, aren't they? They haven't really been helpful. The Imps seem to be much more useful, if only because you can create a new one as soon as one dies. But perhaps I'm a bit too far into the game now for either to be really helpful.

On another note, Blowgun with poison needles rocks! At least in Spider, which is the only place I've used it yet. Hit anything that isn't poison resistant with two poison needles and just wait a few turns! Combined with Conjure flame and a narrow hallway it's pure slaughter! (I don't know how large a part of this is the fact that I have Slay+5, Archery +4, and my Blowgun is +4 too. It seems to be the poison that really does the killing, not hit damage.)

At the risk of starting a forums war, I'll agree with you to say that I also think that zombies/skeletons are pretty lousy to use to any great effect.
The reason the blowgun is rocking in spiders is because they take extra damage from poison. Unless throwing is well trained, I don't think blowguns are really great. Curare are great for slowing non poison resistant stuff (like uniques), and poison is pretty helpful in killing anything slower than you (that slug Gastro.. is a great target.) If you have a lot of space and time and really can't afford to take a few hits, they are useful early/mid game. I guess some people use them later on, but that's not me.

Actually skeletons and zombie are strong in any point of the game, because the monsters you raise are stronger the further you dive - after all they're the dead comrades of the others they're gonna fight. Animate dead is one of the broken spell of the game because it's very strong, it's easy to cast (at 30ish fail rate is already usable), has a tremendous mp cost/benefit ratio, don't care of spellpower and stay relevant until post-end game - when the corpse pretty much disappear unless being with kiku

Some things about:

1) Undead strength depends on the base stats of the monsters. So, a orc knight zombie in orc will be very strong and quite resilient, while a plain orc or even a sorcerer zombie will be almost useless.
2) Zombie like other summons work better when you tank for them - as long as the monster isn't immediately dangerous for you to tank - as the char has far higher defences\hp than almost any monster in the game.
3) Zombie like other summons work better when they are an horde. A single orc knight zombie is a good ally. 10 mixed orc zombi are better, when they surround the enemy and don't fight 1vs1
4) In spiders animate skeletons is awful because you can't animate nothing, in other places is good. However, animate zombi is always better than skeletons, the point of animate skeletons not always being outclass by the other is that is a lv.1 spells so castable pretty much by any not Troglodite char. With a Gn, you obviously don't have this question - animate skeleton is still useful in the remote case you have less than 3 mp, you need to separate from a monster and don't have sbutterflies.

Derived undead also get to use weapons (with brands) and armour, which can make them pretty effective. There are a lot of demonspawn in Pandemonium, so I wouldn't amnesia animate dead before Pan.

I still think the HD of the creature being raised by necromancy should be limited by spellpower. (With animate skeleton having a lower spellpower cap than AD, that would make it virtually useless late game, as level 1 spells should be)

I don't know that that really solves the problem with the spells, I mean obviously removing AS solves it's problem, but I think there's room for a low-powered necromancy spell that isn't pain, as long as it is *actually* a low powered spell. AD's problem isn't really how it works when you get it, it's that it keeps getting better without adding any spellpower to it.

Also, the difference between Skeletons and Zombies isn't large enough that it makes for a meaningful power limit on the spell, if there were no AS, and lower powered AD *only* produced skeletons, it would still be disproportionately valuable at low spellpower in the later part of the game.

ANYHOW yeah derived undead are pretty great; even if they aren't up to the job of directly killing everything for you, they hurt and distract the monsters you're fighting so it's a little like getting irresistible slow and poison on them.

Unless you're with kiku and then zombies can kill pretty much anything you want as long as they can see it.

Hehe, I didn't know this was such a hot topic. :) Anyway, interesting to hear everyone's opinion, as usual! I might have to give these spells a second chance.

nago suggested tanking for the zombies, but isn't that mutually exclusive to using them to slow down enemies? And if I don't tank for them, they die pretty much instantly? Even the ettin zombie I raised was classified as "harmless" by x-v. Also, they seem to crumble to dust before even engaging the enemy - maybe my ca. 12-13 skill level in both Necromancy and Spellcasting is a bit too low? Or do you lure enemies back to the last place of battle and then raise your dead? (Obviously I'm still confused about how to use my undead!)

You should mostly just ignore the "danger ranking" in x-v. All it measures is the experience value of the monster, which has only the loosest correspondence to how dangerous the monster actually is. For example, it considers two-headed ogres more "dangerous" than black mambas.
Skeletons happen to be worth very little experience, so that ettin skeleton is ranked as "harmless", but it will still do a ton of damage to other monsters.
