When to commit to weapon?

With most of my book starts, I have this huge dilemma about when to "commit" to a weapon type and start skilling it up. I know it's something I need to do (because there's always some jerk monster that resists your main source of damage), but I always have great anxiety about the decision. Here is an example character walking around with an armory, who maybe?? pulled the trigger on Staves, but is having massive buyer's remorse upon finding a vampiric trident, nd isn't even sure staves was the right choice to start with:

No need to invest too heavily in weapon until late game (if ever). I'd def use the vamp trident over chaos brand anything. Also, there is no need to get it to min delay on your weapon as a mummy caster. Every millimeter of skill gain is pure pain.

Too early to train weapon. Train invo and use cards against poison-resistant enemies.

I like to train weapon when there are no better investments. For instance, getting spells from starting book online, getting defenses (fighting and dodging). The basic idea is that I can reset fight if I am out of MP and that attacking in melee is a bad idea with low defense
