Acquire a better weapon, ideally a broad axe if you want to keep the shield. AC/EV is much improved from last time. Make sure you can swap in a second rF source for Cerebov/Gehenna (the fire based hell branch). Ideally you'd have a second rF ring carried with you.

Generally speaking if you can clear a zigg, you can clear extended. I know it's not easy to cast spells in CPA, but you have basically maxed your physical skills already, so train necromancy/charms until you can use regeneration, it's very handy for keeping your health high when you're getting hit by torments and damnation and you can't stay at full life. You'll probably only need to get them to roughly level 8 for it to be castable, although if I'm underestimating the armor penalty, maybe 10 skill or so. 6 int will keep it fairly weak, although if you replace some of your -int gear (especially if you have +int gear) that'd help. It still won't be super powerful, but as I said, your physical skills are pretty much maxed, so not much else to do. Alternative options: More evocations, or train a ranged weapon.

Yes. A broad axe would be good though. Scythe of curses is two-handed, and you have a good shield. I wouldn't switch.

In general. you don't need any spells. Train evocations or throwing for ranged attacks.

+int gear is plentiful in stashes, and I carry the hat of the ponderous. Even got some Wiz, +int artefact rings along the way.Unfortunately, I was forced to leave some things in the Ziggurat, including DARK MAUL (i dropped it accidentally, and now i regret it)

The dark maul isn't a very good weapon, it's slow and doesn't deal more damage per time than other weapons. It does deal more damage per hit, but a lot of that is probably overkill anyways.

Could you elaborate further? It would be interesting to know your line of reasoning.
If this learnd entry is up to date, then I can't see how the strategic malus of having monsters often acting twice per each of my attacks justifies the extra damage. Stuff can enter my los AND act all within 1 swing. Maybe i'm missing something important here?

It cannot be completely wrong as the weapon is slow indeed. I am sure the weapon can be the worst weapon in the game, it has its own category "scroll of blinking is useless when Ancient Lich gets lucky to hit you twice in a row with LCS".

Probably has something to do with the fact that you are guaranteed to one-shot an ancient lich, or even a gold dragon. I got it once on an OgBe, it was pretty obscene. Granted, using it in a crowd was a bad idea (except for annhilating a must-kill adjacent target), but I tended to avoid crowds as OgBe anyhow and if stuck in one, just switched out to a normal GC.


If you are adjacent to a very dangerous monster, killing it with 50 extra damage with your first action is simply superior to only taking it to 3/4ths hp with that same action.

Nothing is guaranteed with the way crawl combat works. My "record" is something about 17 attacks where fsim showed I was expected to kill the monster in just 2 attacks.

Unless you have an obscene amount of slaying or a bug to abuse, dark maul does deal more damage per time than almost any other weapon; you need something like a triple sword of speed to beat it in that regard. And even then, dark maul is arguably still better because of the high attack delay.
There's this popular idea that doing damage with several small, fast hits is better than doing the same damage with one big hit, and that attack delays over 10 are especially bad because they let monsters get double actions. Now, this line of argument would make sense if attack delay were incurred before you inflict damage, but it's not. No matter how slow an action is, monsters only get to act after the action is done. If you one-shot a monster, that monster gets 0 actions regardless of whether your attack delay is 5 or 50. Consolidating your damage into fewer, slower hits actually results in monsters getting fewer actions.
Sure, an attack delay of like 100 would be really bad, because monsters can do a lot of things in that time if you miss or fail to kill the target. But dark maul doesn't have an attack delay of 100, it has 30 at the most and you're not going to have 0 maces skill for long. If a monster can kill you in 30 aut, you shouldn't be fighting it in the first place, no matter how good your weapon is.
As far as monsters both moving into LOS and getting actions before you can react, this is definitely a problem with using autoexplore/autotravel with high movement delay (you can find countless TVs of instant death to autoexplore even with low movement delay). But dark maul doesn't affect your movement delay, just your attack delay. So you can avoid it by just not fighting next to unexplored territory, which, y'know, is something you should be doing no matter what your weapon is. And you'd need fantastically bad luck for your attack delay to actually make a difference in that situation anyway.

I also find it quite funny that tasonir would say dark maul isn't very good because it's slow, because from what I recall, he's quite happy to endorse statue form and not using haste.

I believe dark maul is the best fixedart melee weapon in the game (plutonium sword would have beaten it in older versions, but plutonium sword's been nerfed a lot).

@Duvessa: I didn't actually do the math on it - I'm mostly just repeating what I "know" from past write ups on the weapon. I did see that it was recently buffed to +10 from +6, and I think the base damage also changed, although I'm not sure what the old value was? Looks like it was roughly 44/45, and now it's 52?

Running some quick fsims:

Vs stone giant, 2 skill:
+9 Great mace of crushing: 6.1 AvEffDam
+10 dark maul: 11.8 AvEffDam

20 skill (min delay on great mace)
great mace: 19.4
dark maul: 22.7

27 skill:
great mace: 21.6
dark maul: 31.0

Seems like the buff to 52 base damage puts it significantly ahead of great maces. It's close if you happen to have exactly 20 skill because that's the most favorable case for great maces, but for other values the maul is even further ahead.

with 27 fighting as well (above runs had 3 fighting):
great mace: 30.9
dark maul: 42.6

I was originally going to try more sims (such as vs different monsters) but I'm feeling lazy now. They should all show basically the same thing anyways - the difference in accuracy is only 2, and the dark maul is actually more accurate, so it's not like it misses more often. If it does miss that might put you into more of a bad situation, but on average it's more accurate. You could make an argument from a worst case scenario against it, I suppose.

Let me clarify the specifics of this separately:

1) I did mention it was slow but this wasn't really meant to be a negative, just a preface to the claim that it deals less DPS (DPAUT?). But since I was wrong about that (the lower dps), it seems like it is in fact a good weapon.

2) It's true I don't mind being slow, but I generally prefer slow movement to slow attack speed - I tend to fight in one location and so once you've 'planted' yourself there you no longer move, but will make multiple attacks. So an attack speed penalty would probably be worse than a movement speed, although this is more subjective and I can see why people would disagree. No need to move when you've got lesser beckoning!

3) Repeatable haste has been removed, so you can't really use that often. It's still around for emergency use, of course. I've never been against haste, I just like chei and the two are obviously incompatible.

The main thing to note here is that tasonir likes to play with Chei, which means that it is hard to reposition. So you are fighting in an open or half-open area with multiple monsters around you. Which in turn means that high defences will help a lot, which implies that statue form becomes relatively better compared to other forms. In addition, statue form is the only late-game form which allows a shield.

Dark maul has high damage, but it doesn't help your defences, so it's not directly comparable.

+1 for defense is more important than offense. I've seen wins with plain spear as MiBe but I have yet to see a win as OpBe in robe with starting Dodging and 1-3 AC.

True, but I generally don't "count" this because unarmed is very fast (5 aut min delay) and so once you slow it down in statue form, it's 7.5 aut on average, which I just consider to be the same as the standard 7 aut delay for 2h weapons.

So yes, Statue form slows attacks, but it slows them (when they are unarmed) to 7.5 auts. 7.5 auts isn't slow - 16.5 auts (dark maul) is slow. I guess it's all a matter of perspective :)

And yes, you don't start using statue form with 27 unarmed skill, and I do consider it to be an issue when you have lower unarmed skill and your attacks are actually slow - usually somewhere around 12 auts since I tend to have at least 10 skill early on. So I just try to train unarmed once I'm comfortable with my ability to cast statue form, and usually also some defenses, and fairly soon my attack is back < 10 auts.

Really if anything it probably just shows that taking slow actions is perfectly fine as long as you have an accurate assessment of the threats around you, and the defenses to survive being around them for a considerable amount of time.

It's mostly likely possible to do this if you worship Yred or something and you roll over everything with your army.

That would again prove that defense is more important for a character. Yred gives crazy permanent offense but there are no such gods for defense

Yes, this is kinda relevant: as long as you can stimate how bad could be the next 1.5 monster's pseudo-turn in in case of you missing, it's better to concentrate the damage in 1 action rather than diluite in several, for the reasons Duvessa gave.

And my point about SF is that it does something similar to what Dark Maul does: it increase your attack power (+50%) but it slow it so you're actually doing more damage per action but in more time.
And while Dark Maul only slows your attack, SF slows everything so the second drawback is more significant (and no, I don't think all the defensive bonus it gives offset enough that drawback unless doing kiting everytime).

Note that I wrote "permanent" i.e. passive and non-random. When playing FeDK I literally skipped multiple turns in a row and still killed all monsters in view, often without taking any damage, I cannot imagine doing it with any other god. Then I rested a bit to heal the army and continued exploring. It does not work with Fedhas and Animate Dead as the army eventually disappears (zombies lose HP, mushrooms lose number of attacks).
