Any pointers for third rune/ endgame

So I've got further than I've ever managed before (this is only the second run that I've picked up any runes at all), and I'm hoping for some advice. I'm just trying for a 3-rune win, if that wasn't obvious.

I'm a bit worried about Vaults 5. My only previous run (Draconian Conjurer) that managed 2 runes died in no short order on V:5. But from what I've read, I think Slime Pits and Abyss are probably worse.

Had a few hairy moments; worst was on Shoals 1 when I entered a bit too early, tried to Tele, and then failed to realise that tree form cancels Tele. Think I was on 6 hp at one point, within range of Roxanne and at least two ranged Merfolk.
Brothers in Arms has saved me quite a few times, and Trog's Hand was really useful in Shoals when I hadn't any other source of MR. Berserk was great early on, but I'm increasingly unwilling to use it because it shuts down all my panic buttons.
Phials of floods is really good.
Got a lucky fire dragon armour in the volcano that I've been using ever since. Amulet of Reflection +6 really makes Yaktaurs less scary.
Not sure I should have bothered training slings, but having a ranged option is quite handy.
Depths was getting a bit scary; when I encountered Mennas on Depths:4 I decided enough was enough and went off to do Vaults instead. I haven't yet done Elven Halls; Asterion is guarding the entrance on the EH side.

Any advice appreciated.

Mennas in Dephts:4 and Asterion in Elf:1... Damn, that's rotten luck.

It may be better to wait for a more experienced player to post, but...

From my previous experiences, I think you may be good to go Slimes so long as you have rCorr and maybe rMut. I once slew the Royal Jelly with melee attacks only (Might and Oka helped), granted, I had to run ASAP from the jelly horde after.

The thing is Vaults:5 it's a real crapshoot. It may be worse than Abyss, it may not, depending on the enemy horde BEYOND the welcoming party. A very promising character entered with only vault guards, orc mages and knights in sight, but some teleport later I got surrounded by liches, golden dragons and titans.

Abyss can get scary but it's not as constant. True, screaming starclusters and wicked stars are really bad news, but most of the time it's large abominations and the like. And if an ugly vault spawns you can tele.

If that's sounds too bad try to find a way to avoid Asterion. Or you could use phantom mirror on him to kill him. Getting to Elf it's the better choice since there's a lot of XP and good treasure there. BUT REMEMBER TO BRING MR+ STUFF, also antimagic if you have it.

Still, I only have like 1 actual win and a 11-rune chara who died from hubris. It may be better to wait for other comments :oops:

EDIT: Read your morgue file again. I'd suggest you get a shield and start training Shields, also train more Fighting, you'll need the HP. Slings are underpowered later, you may be better off training Throwing from now on.

I don't think you'd want to melee The Royal Jelly. You have a wand of cloud and nice evocation skills though. You can probably hurt it a lot before it gets to you. With the fustibalus, I don't imagine the Slime Pits would be that hard.

Slings are fine and all, but you have large rocks and large rocks are better. And you're thowing aps don't completely, absolutely, and totally suck like all your other skills. I'd be training the crap out of throwing.

Asterion shouldn't be too much of a problem if you can lure him over to the stairs and escape if his summons turn nasty or if he gets off a lucky conjuration hit.

I'd be really worried about taking on slime without spells, and it doesn't look like you have any potions of haste (edit: or scrolls of blinking) to help you run for the stairs if you do kill TRJ. I've personally never beat slime with a character who was less than level 26.

Wand of clouds + agility + phial of floods + brothers in arms is probably enough to take Mennas, if you absolutely have to. I think silence blocks Trogs abilities but you usually get a turn or two before silence kicks in, so y'can BiA and maybe berserk. Or you can leave him along, head for vaults:5, and if you have to stair-dance back up to level 4 and you see the divine halo, pop a teleport IMMEDIATELY.

L: 21 seems fairly low for having beaten depths already - But that's probably a sign of good play. :)

You could pursue any of the options really. There's no particular reason why this character can't kill Mennas, Asterion, TRJ or do V:5.

For Slime you would benefit from having rCorr and rC+. You have rings, so that shouldn't be a huge problem. Wands of clouds are very good in slime, because all the monsters just happily walk into the clouds. Generally, you don't want to clear the levels in slime, but just make stairs safe, look for next stairs, go down, make stairs safe, etc. I tend to clear around a little bit on the bottom floor, but that may not be the best idea.

My general strategy for TRJ is to head into one of the corridors near the centre, so that you only have 3 (or is it 4?) floor tiles next to you. Buff up, then summon something, BiA, scroll of summining, box of beasts, even spiders. Anything to fill those tiles. That way you can fight TRJ 1-on-1. Then you can blast it with clouds, and just generally shred it with your claws.

You could consider immolation, considering that you have rF+++ and good health. I've never done that, so not sure how best to set it up. Possibly near an entrance to the centre. The general idea is that you hit TRJ a couple of times, then use immolation to put the debuff on the spawned jellies, then kill a couple of jellies and watch everything blow up. Needless to say this isn't risk free.

Before fighting Asterion, you should have a look what gear he had. You can inspect enemies on other floor, I believe. Generally, if you spend some time on other floors then he might not be next to the stairs when you come down. Either way, a couple of BiA and Berserk should deal with him. The most dangerous thing is probably when he uses Major Destruction and gets Orb of Elec. It might be worth wearing your rElec ring just for that. Incidentally, the ring will also let you +Blink away from him. You could also read tele, wait 2 turns, then go down to hopefully avoid him altogether.

I don't know your U:4 layout, but if possible go down stairs away from Mennas. I usually try to avoid Mennas unless I've got overpowered spells. The large shield can make the fight very frustrating. If you choose to fight, remember that Evokables are not cancelled by Silence. You may be able to +Blink out of the silence radius to read srolls if you need to. Once again, BiA are your friends, Trog's Hand may be a good idea too, because Mass Confusion is annoying.

Your character is probably strong enough for V:5, if you do it right. You somehow need to get to an area that doesn't have an open layout. Scroll of Mapping helps. I prefer buffing up (Trog's Hand too!), heading down a Hatch, then reading mapping, then run away/Tele as necessary. Fight with your BiA friends once you are in a relatively confined place. Once again, with rF+++ you could consider scroll of immolation on the entrance. People do this, but I have never tried it. rC+ would be good, because there are enemies that can do high cold damage, like Frost Giants/Dragons and Liches.

Reptisaurus is right, that your best ranged option as a Tr is usually large rocks. -4 Aptitude for training Slings is just too painful, especially because you have a bunch of poor aptitudes to fight with already. Large rocks also do large damage, which is nice!

And finally, also as Repti said, shields are a good idea on Trolls. You get to use them for less XP than most other species and they make a noticeable difference to survival. And since you don't even have to worry about spell success, you can start using it before the penalty is fully eliminated. I would probably look for an enchanted Large Shield if available, or at least a normal shield if it has some good properties. Together with you amulet you'll get pretty good protection from missiles, which is nice for Tr.

Thanks very much for all this, everybody.

I was wondering about large rocks versus fustibalus+9. I suppose I thought the +9 enhancement bonus on the sling made it better. I do use rocks occasionally; one nice thing about them is that you don't need to keep wielding and unwielding the sling to switch from melee to ranged.

I have to admit until now I'd never considered a shield. I lose my auxiliary off-hand attack presumably; does that affect damage output for an unarmed character much? Unfortunately, I've found very few; not a single magical shield has appeared. There is one un-enchanted large shield on shoals:2, a few bucklers and shields in various places, and an unidentified runed buckler on Vaults:2 (my current level!). I suppose I should ID that buckler.

I'm leaning towards trying Slime Pits. Even if I die, I at least learn a bit more about an area I've never done before.

I never seem to be able to hang on to scrolls of blinking. They're such amazingly convenient ways of getting out a nasty situation that I tend to use them up almost as soon I get them.

I haven't cleared Depths, btw. I've only cleared floors 1-3 and a small bit of 4. I poked my nose into Depths 5 just to say I'd been (same for Hell).

Can trolls use any helmets at all? I haven't found any that I can equip.

The rule of thumb I've seen is that 1 point of base damage is worth about 3 points of enchantment/slaying.

I love bucklers. Most of my characters use them -- some forever, others until my defenses and awesome weapon option convince me I can use a 2H. Enchant to max, raise Shields to eliminate penalties (and more later when you need to raise defenses), and consider Amulet of Reflection as your primary neck slot item due to the great synergy (all buckler blocks become reflections). It's fun when a pack of yakataurs kill themselves while you deal with other threats. Reflecting the occasional LCS or Orb of Destruction is neat too (it's better to never be in range, but sometimes it can't be helped).

Trolls can wear hats. AC:0, enchantable to +2.

Okaaaaayy...

So just a few turns after the morgue file above, I get hit by a mace of distortion and banished to Abyss:3. I find the Rune almost immediately, and then spend a rather scary ~1000 turns trying to find an exit with an intelligence score of -2 having been hit by a load of stat draining abilities. But I'm out of the Abyss, and I have my third rune! Still "Brainless", but now only -1.

Oh, and it appears trolls can't wear bucklers... :-(

I don't think it's very obvious what enchantment level actually does, or how it compares to weapon base damage, etc. Let's just say that large rocks are the highest damage (per aut) generic ranged weapon in the game. Also, generally speaking, you are usually better off using something that you have better aptitudes for. A difference of 1 or 2 can be OK for the right item, but 3 is painful. For most Trolls that means unarmed and throwing. For HO it means axes, for Mf polearms, etc.

Weapon swapping is fairly straightforward in crawl, you can swap between the item in 'a' and the item in 'b', by pressing: ' And you can re-assign the items to different letters by pressing =

A normal large shield is fine. I would check enchanted shields, just in case something has great properties, like +3 AC, rF+, rC++ or something.

Trolls can wear hats, but not helmets.

When you go to Slime, be careful with slime creatures, titanic slame creatures hit very hard, azure jellies because of the cold damage and acid blobs because of their strong ranged attacks.

Congrats, mostly!

Trolls can use regular shields with reduced penalties, and only need 9 skill to remove all penalties. (It's 15 skill for normal sized races.)

Do search for any items that give +Int. There are almost always a few rings, weapons or bad randarts.
