Deadliest monster per floor

Anyone with Sequell skills care to create and share here a table of the deadliest monster for each dungeon and branch level? (Where "deadliest" = responsible for more player deaths at that level than any other monster.)

Or I am happy to if I can get an assist on the methodology. :-)

EDIT: list posted in second comment below, and updated after further guidance.

Use * in the name field to search all games. Use 'place=foo' to find kills for each floor you like. Use !boring to exclude games that quit. recent limits it to version 0.20 or 0.19. and thisweek returns only games from the last seven days.

's=' summarizes the field you specify by number of occurences. so s=killer lists how many times each thing killed someone.

I really suggest using '/msg sequell !Lg * foo' both so you dont spam the channel and you get a full list of killers instead of a truncated list.

Check https://github.com/crawl/sequell/blob/master/docs/listgame.md to get more keywords, fields, functions, and learn the syntax.

Deadliest monster per floor

I note that many of the deadliest are ranged enemies. Some of that is probably from stealing the killing blows from melee monsters.

Titan's in Crypt are from Oka's wrath:

  Code:
!lg * !boring recent crypt:2 s=cikiller
Cerebot: 78 games for * (!boring recent crypt:2): 17x the fury of Okawaru, 8x Khufu, 6x a vampire knight, 5x a phantasmal warrior, 4x a curse skull, 3x a necromancer, 3x a lich, 3x a vampire mage, 3x Mennas, 3x an ancient champion, 3x an ancient lich, 2x Xtahua, 2x a death knight, 2x Margery, the wrath of Vehumet, the rage of Trog, something's death curse, Lugonu's corruption, Boris, a stone giant skelet...

So that's more the fact that Crypt monsters are so relatively not dangerous combined with the fact that a lot of people use it to Crypt as a quick way to gain good god piety when abandoning Oka.

Also The Royal Jelly not being the "deadliest" monster in slime:5. I know why it isn't there but it's still funny.

The list that mattlistener compiled looks like it uses the `killer` field, which means direct killer. The `ikiller` field will follow summon kills (and the like) back to the responsible summoner, and when you check this way, TRJ definitely wins.

  Code:
advil: !lg * recent !boring place=slime:5 s=ikiller
Sequell: 822 games for * (recent !boring place=slime:5): 494x the Royal Jelly, 203x an acid blob, 29x an azure jelly, 14x a slime creature, 14x an eye of devastation, 11x, 11x the player character, 10x a death ooze, 8x a titanic slime creature, 7x a great orb of eyes, 6x Dissolution, ...

ikiller vs killer shouldn't matter too much for most places, though it might also be a good idea to use `ckiller` instead of `killer` to get the immediate killer: this will fix hydras among other things (with `killer` they are differentiated by number of heads). For example (also shows how to limit by count, which is kind of useful for these sorts of queries):

  Code:
advil: !lg * recent !boring place=lair:1 s=ckiller ?: n>100
Sequell: 8960 games for * (recent !boring place=lair:1): 2544x a hydra, 1295x a spiny frog, 1222x a komodo dragon, 614x a blink frog, 604x a black mamba, 521x a yak, 369x a player ghost, 317x a wolf, 267x an oklob plant, 216x a porcupine, 190x Gastronok, 158x Harold, 146x Sonja, 140x a crocodile, 135x an electric eel, 116x a killer bee, 106x a rime drake

Here's the distribution of hydra killers for lair 1 by `killer` (top results for `!lg * recent !boring place=lair:1 s=ckiller, killer`), showing why hyrdras appear in 2nd place when not aggregated:

  Code:
10526 games for * (recent !boring place=lair:1): 2544x a hydra (663x an eight-headed hydra, 492x a seven-headed hydra, 395x a six-headed hydra, 258x a five-headed hydra, 142x a four-headed hydra, 117x a nine-headed hydra, 108x a ten-headed hydra, 79x an 11-headed hydra, 75x a 12-headed hydra, 53x a 13-headed hydra, 35x a 14-headed hydra, 28x a 15-headed hydra, 27x a 16-headed hydra, 16x a 17-headed hydra, 14x an 18-headed hydra, 13x a three-headed hydra, 13x a 19-headed hydra, 8x a 20-headed hydra, 7x a two-headed hydra, a one-headed hydra), 1295x a spiny frog (1295x a spiny frog), ...

`ckiller` will also canonicalize other stuff, such as player ghosts.

Edit: from gammafunk's example, I noticed the (previously undocumented, I just added it) `cikiller` field which also seems to canonicalize while counting ikillers where they matter. So this is probably the best one to use in general. (Though there aren't any cases I can find where you would actually need to canonicalize an actual indirect killer so this always seems to produce either the ikiller or the ckiller winner for these queries.)

One of my least favorite crawl experiences: "You can see Rupert."

I don't really understand what makes Death Yaks so deadly. By that point players should be well adjusted to speed 10 melee hitters. They've seen yaks, elephants, ogres, etc. Hmm.

Maybe it is because death yaks have more MR. It may also be surprising to some that death yaks are so much tougher than plain yaks. Also some may think that surely elephants must be harder than yaks, death or no.

Yeah, death yaks are really a *lot* tougher than yaks and even elephants, when I was a novice, I overextended myself trying to kill one or two death yaks only to realize I wasn't going to be able to kill the others in the pack, but now I was surrounded, in large part because I underestimated them (It's possible to be unable to kill a death yak pack even with consumables, when you can burn through a regular yak pack just by tabbing.)

Re: Deadliest monster per floor

Thanks advil for the guidance about ckiller and ikiller. I have gone back over all the data looking at those summaries and updated my list where appropriate.

Player Ghosts hover around #3 deadliest throughout the early dungeon starting at D3 (where they're #2).

Ugly things taken as a group are the deadliest in D11, D12, D14, and D15.

Hydrae taken as a group show up as #2 in D11 and D12 -- probably dragged up from the Lair entrance.

Hydrae are by far the deadliest monster on every level of Lair. Story at 11! Also Swamp levels 1 and 4. Thorn Hunters on 2 and 3 are even deadlier.

When credited for kills by its spawns The Royal Jelly is the deadliest monster on Slime:4, where it cannot go. Also on Slime:5, of course.

Also due to [edit: ???] the Ironheart Preserver is deadlier than Vault Wardens in some of Vaults.

Similarly, Curse Skull and Khufu are the deadliest in Crypts 1 and 2 respectively.

The other thing that makes it easy to underestimate death yaks is the randomness of Crawl's combat. If yaks are easy for your char to deal with and the first death yak rolls low damage at first, it's easy get careless and let two of them stand next to you, and then they both hit for 27 damage and whoops.

Fortunately it does not apply to 0.20+ where max damage is shown in monster description, devs are great.

They probably confused ironheart preserver with ironbrand convokers. Ironheart preserver doesn't have any summons. They usually spawn with an ogre pack or something like that.

And convokers technically don't have summons either, they actually teleport real mobs from elsewhere on the level to you.

They are probably the biggest non-magic/unique/ghost threat in depths. Juggernauts are quite a lot easier to deal with by comparison.

A single caustic shrike is not much more dangerous than a single juggernaut IMHO. It's just that juggernauts don't come in packs of 5...
