I'm on D6, I have 7 in axes with a war axe of chopping and I've just found a vampiric scimitar and I have 0 in long blades. Should I make the switch? I'm with Trog if that makes a difference.

Scimitar is not a great base type. I think it's better to keep up with the axes, Trog will probably gift you great ones. And if you train up swords, he'll dilute his gifts between axes and longswords, which do not crosstrain.
