Pan lords during orb run

I had a YASD just now:

http://crawl.develz.org/morgues/trunk/s ... 095345.txt

I know that it could have been avoided, but I am still a little bit annoyed. A pan lord petrified me with chaos attack, then paralysed me while I was petrified, and I died from max hp. I read teleport (before he petrified me), but it did not seemed to trigger (or maybe I landed badly, I do not know). (I should have been hasted because I had Gozag, and I could have uncontrolled blinked. That's all that I can think of.)

What are the safest options for pan lords during the orb run? Also, why are they in the game? Is it safer to farm a little bit of xp before picking up the orb now? (I have only collected 3 runes.)

Please only give advice about pan lords during the orb run for 3 rune characters. I know that I built the char suboptimally, and I played very badly elswhere, but I only want to hear about reliable strategies to avoid pan lords.

Re: Pan lords during orb run

Probably not much you could have done about this. But before each orb run, I learn Passwall, if I have any chance of learning it. Not a useful spell in any other circumstance, but it might have allowed you to break contact with that Pan Lord, as you seemed to have met him on D4.
Edit: I guess Passwall would have been out of reach for your 8 Int mummy without any spell experience, so that would have been bad advice in your particular situation.

Re: Pan lords during orb run

It's a level 2 spell, so it's quite possible to cast it, especially with switching to wizardry.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I'll just reiterate my hatred for paralysis, because IMO the player should always have tactical options, and paralysis has none.

Re: Pan lords during orb run

Yes, it looks like we need to farm Abyss for potions of haste and every Mummy should worship Gozag. Great design, paralysis needs some preparation to be dealt with! (sarcasm)

Re: Pan lords during orb run

Actually it was petrification, so I had time to act. Also, it's only chaos attack that could bypass my MR, so it does not apply to other forms. I guess I should not have been adjacent to the pan lord, that is the design intent.

Actually it was petrify followed by paralysis.

You got petrified via MR+++++ so I believe it an effect of Panlord melee too.
Another "great design"

That's a very bad intent, if it's not clear from my previous messages. Every Mummy should follow Gozag and pray for haste potion or risk dying. Teleport, random blink, passwall don't guarantee anything, just haste does.

Re: Pan lords during orb run

While I am not sure, I think that the pan lord hasted up, and he was faster than me in the first place. So haste also does not guarantee anything.

Only Stasis would help, and I think its removal was a mistake.

I do not think that statsis prevents petrification, is it?

Ok, "great design" again. Random number of random speed monsters with random spell sets and random melee attacks, some of those irresistibly kill characters from full HP (petrify/paralysis melee), prevent escapes (haste, silence) and do some other silly things like summoning floating eyes or casting level 9 spells.

No but it prevents paralysis. You can !cancel yourself out of petrification, meaning you actually have a tactical option. I've often ?tele'd myself out of danger, can't do that with Para.

Re: Pan lords during orb run

Well, I could not have quaffed cancellation since I was a mummy. I also teleported, and it did not helped. Maybe it was too slow due to the orb, or I was landed badly.

Re: Pan lords during orb run

Panlord melee is very dangerous. I can't tell from the morgue how you encountered the killer. Reading tele immediately, then checking potion for haste would've been my approach probably, if caught out on the open. Near stairs I would've tried to go up/down and then use different stairs.

You didn't learn any spells. This is relevant because Swiftness / Blink / Butterflies can help in these situations. And every character can learn those.

You didn't train evo, despite having a load of strong evocables. Fan of Gales would've probably allowed you to get to the stairs.

Scroll of summoning might have put something in the way of our friend. Even a couple of rats getting killed immediately would've give you a few extra aut while waiting for tele.

Re: Pan lords during orb run

It's worse than that because a very small fraction of Panlords have chaos attacks and a very small fraction of chaos attacks are paralysis (or petrify), so you have to be vigilant even though a powerful character can easily tab almost all Panlords. By contrast, Eldritch tentacles *all* have chaos attacks, so you know what you're risking.

You should have bribed branch as soon as you made it back to D:15.

(This is not a defense of pan lord chaos brand bullshit)

At least the Pan lord descriptions should tell what kind of attacks the Pan lord has.
