Dealing with Mutations

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere already, but I'm signing up and making this post mostly out of frustration..

I was just wondering what people do to deal with mutations in the endgame now? I find the lack of options for curing/resisting mutations to be very frustrating these days. I would assume that they would become less frequent without the ability to get rid of them as easily, but it seems as if I just have to run into one shining eye, or OOF and I am horribly mutated. Is there something that I am completely overlooking? Or am I just fearing the mutations too much? Would love to hear some peoples thoughts on this. I am having a hard time adapting to this.

Drinking 2-3 potions of mutations will usually reset you to only having a couple usually with no downside or a downside you can live with.

New potions of mutation act like cure mutation, (old mutation), and Bene mut rolled into one.

I'd also like some insight into the current mutation mini-game. I recently started my first 0.20 game and just managed to snatch the 3rd rune, all without mutations. Next stop is Zot, and in previous versions my tactic was to carry all curemuts with me and quaff one if I got one particularly nasty one. Should I lug all the mut potions with me now and start quaffing those instead in the same situation?

Oh I see. So one can either treat them as benemut + curemut and start the mutation game early, or hold on to them and use them instead of old curemut when needed.

Yes, although they're more common than curemut was, so if you hold on to them, you'll probably end up with a fairly large stack (interpret that how you will)

Once you're in the endgame, Depths/Zot, or extended game, Pan/Hells, most mutations are essentially harmless.

Slot mutations can be annoying if you lose access to a good item, but that shouldn't break any character.

Wild magic can be annoying, but in the lategame important spells are rarely just above the fail limit. Either way, XP fixes the problem and characters who are all-in on a single difficult to cast spell are rarely a good idea.

Berserkitis can be dangerous if it triggers in a bad situations, but it is entirely avoidable, by either being near starving (a really painful way to manage the situation) or not attacking in melee. That's quite easy. Throw something point blank if you have to.

MP-powered wands used to be pretty terrible, because you could sometimes not use important wands. But now with haste, tele and heal wounds gone (really?!) that seems less impactful. Clouds is nice and bolt-damage wands can be good, but if the life of a character comes down to a wand-shot then something has gone wrong before.

People seem to consider teleportitis dangerous in Zot. As a counter-measure I would suggest a strong god with a serious panic button (Zin, Sanctuary for example), alternatively, cure with gods or potion if possible.

I think blurry vision is bad, and I would try to cure it if possible. Strong panic buttons can mitigate this also.

Frail can also be quite bad, especially on squishier characters. I might not try to cure Frail:1 every time, depending on the circumstances.

Slow healing 3, probably needs curing, unless you want to join Makhleb.

Everything else seems harmless to me. Are there any specific mutations you have trouble with?

I lost a super powerful character due to being stupid and also having blurry vision in pan, so definitely cure that one. But really overall the new mutation potion is a buff because you'll generally end up with a few positive mutations in the late game, with either a negative mutation you don't care about, or none at all. Do avoid quaffing too many potions early on, you want to make sure you have a few around in case you need to change your mutations when you pick up something like blurry vision, but otherwise you'll generally always have a net positive mutation set. I managed to have rF, rC and robust for most of my recent win, with no negative mutations at all. It did eventually get reshuffled, but having those for a long time was great.

UPDATE: Since starting that topic I went on to win a 15 runer with a Gargoyle Tank. Not the most impressive as far as 15 runes go, but I had somehow never gotten even a standard win with a Gargoyle before. Always got lazy and tabbed into something stupid.

I didn't realize that about the mutation potions becoming sort of an all-in one-thing. That's exactly the kind of thing I was looking to find out. It kinda turns the mutations in extended into a managing process of shuffling in and out rather than suffering them until you no longer can bare it and clearing them off. All in all they were nothing major to this character, but it might have been different had I been using something less indestructible. Blurry Vision was definitely the worst of them.

Hat's off to the person that suggested being always hungry as a way to manage berserkitis. That's pure madness and I love it.

My characters always memorize Summon Lighting Spire, because it blocks line of fire and can get rid of single nexoqec or shining eye. It's not enough to deal with cacodemons or OOFs, though, but it may give enough time to find an opportunity to deal with them safely.

I second using SLS for blocking muts. If you put one directly in between you and a shining eye or a neqoxec, it at leasts prevents getting mutated from distance, and if just might kill 'em by itself. Butterflies is also useful, but way less reliable as malmutate blockers.

Is inhibited regeneration worth using !mut for? I've been fine the whole game but now I'm wondering if I should play mutation roulette, since I've been in a few scrapes where I'm running away and regeneration would have been nice.

How many !mut do you have? If you have anything like 3-5 then you're in a good spot to improve your mutation set and keep a couple of potions back, just in case.

If you are down to one or two, I wouldn't use them, because Blurry Eyes is really bad and having a way to get rid of it is good.

That's a nice ring, but haven't you got a better weapon? Tridents have quite low base damage and Oka should be handing over big 2-handers.

It looks like your main way of killing enemies is to skewer them, so get yoursef a bigger stick. That rF+ buckler doesn't seem worth the tradeoff, when you could be chopping stuff in halve with a Glaive. At the moment you don't get much out of your very high polearms skill.

I you wanna stick with shields, aren't there any decent Dtridents and an actual shield around?

I'd rather focus on the fact you have 24 polearms (with oka, which means max allowed melee skill is 22 and in most cases is a waste too) and using a +8 trident, while having a antimagic glaive (and I suppose some ?EW lying around) and cleared Shoals:4 so also most probably some demon trident.

Get a real weapon and you'll see you'll get much lesser situations where you run away.

Plus, blocked regen with monster in LOS means 0.5 hp less per turn of combat - which you can certainly see it is totally trivial. That mut may be only a real problem in places where you can't easily get upstair to rest - e.g. V:5 or pan or hells.

I'm training polearms to 26 so I can use my +2 bardiche of chopping, which is in a stash. I know it's kind of a waste with Heroism but I'd rather have min delay always, and with +4 aptitudes it did not seem like a huge investment.

I've been using the buckler + trident because I wanted rF+, and the damage vs my best halberd is only 2 lower (according to fsim). I have also been using throwing to soften up guys, so I figure while I'm throwing a little blocking is nice. But yeah, I'll switch to the bardiche once it's ready.

No demon tridents so far. :( I could switch to an actual shield but I didn't want to invest that much, given that I will switch to 2H soon.

I have 3 !mut plus one in a shop, but I do like the sturdy frame mutation so I think I'll just live with inhibited regeneration for now.

Just because I haven't seen it mentioned, there's always the option to go to Jiyva to get a new set of muts (and clear the bad ones) or popping over to Zin and flushing all the muts completely.

You don't have to wait until 26 to switch. If your only other option is a regular trident, switch now.
