Armor Choice - Orange Crystal vs Plate

So, been pretty lucky with armor drops this game. Found Orange Crystal Plate in a treasure trove but also have a +6 plate armor that has slay +6 and sInv. Which is better?

SInv doesn't figure into this decision, as it's pretty much unnecessary. Clarity is also neither here nor there, unless you've got some kind of super-safe zig-setup ambitions.

So you end up with a choice between AC and slaying. The OCP gives you 9 AC more (!) at Armour skill ~12.2 than the plate. You're a HO with battleaxe at min-delay. Eventually Oka will give you a solid exec-axe. You won't really struggle to kill things. I would take the AC (and free Int / clarity) any day.

Also unrands are fun.

Although really, I think it's small. Pretty much everyone is forced to do Spider without clarity these days and it's still fairly straightforward.

OK, took advice and stayed with orange crystal. Got first three runes (spider, swamp, abyss) and made my guy a little stronger. I don't think I've ever had an easier time in those branches than with this armor.

Now I came across a +14 chain mail that is pretty strong. Curious on thoughts between this and orange crystal. This chain gives me 43 AC and 13 EV whereas the orange crystal gives me 49 AC & 10 EV. Not sure how much damage reduction between orange & chain matters at this point.

I plan on taking this character through some of extended because I want to try and hybrid melee & cast some stuff in the late late game (fun to me). Plan is to clear depths / zot while leveling some combat stuff (fighting, crossbows, armor) then switch to shining one and head to crypt and other extended and build up some spellcasting stuff from there.

That chain mail is 'pretty strong' indeed. Honestly, at this stage of the game the difference is small enough that it probably doesn't matter which one you wear.

Still, if you're interested, let's consider the differences. You're trading 6 AC, 3 Int, clarity and an enhancer bonus for 3 EV, 3 Str and 3 Slay.

Again, I would say clarity isn't important. You have fairly low MR, but confusion is more of an early game threat and you have 18 potions of curing.

6 AC is clearly better than 3 EV, especially at fairly low base-level of 10 EV. However, your dodging skill is quite low and if you train that and wear the chain, that gap will shrink. Then it will probably be about equal as far as defences are concerned. (Your axe gives Dex and will make that dodging skill work harder.)

3 Str gives a bit of damage, but doesn't do much else, because your Str is already very high. I would suggest you picked too much Str at level up. Some of those points could've gone into Int, to make casting easier and spells stronger. Dex probably doesn't have so much value in OCP, but now with the chain it would've been good to have more.

3 Int makes casting easier, but I suspect that is more than eaten up by the ER difference between the armors. It also makes spells marginally stronger and archmagi also makes spells stronger. You probably have too little Int to make use of spells where spell power actually matters. So I don't think it's important.

+Inv is nice. Invisibility can be really good, even in Zot. Maybe that would swing it for me.

So you can go with the chain, train some dodging, maybe raise Dex for more EV. Or stick with OCP and raise Int. Don't raise Str. I'd probably change to the chain, because it'll be faster to get utility spells castable, especially slightly higher level ones.

Don't try to kill things with spells. It will take way too much XP.

You overtrained axes in my opinion. Even if you must train exec axes to mindelay, just stop at 26. That axe is also 'pretty strong'. Just be a bit careful around enemies that can paralyse. I would recommend carrying another axe (battle axe if need be) that does not have MR-. Or you can just shoot enemies at close range of course, once your ranged skill gets a bit higher.

Unless I have an amazing crossbow, I'd usually go with throwing for ranged damage, all other things being equal. With Oka you'll get plenty of ammo either way.

Before investing heavily in ranged skills, I'd get the failure rate of Blink and Swiftness down. That will also take care of RMsl. Animate skeleton and regeneration are also really good. Your summoning aptitude is decent, so you could eventually seek to get shadow creatures, which is very strong. Apportation is nice too.

Get some more invocation too, with +3 apt you can get a lot of mileage out of heroism/finesse.

Thanks for advice. I did some testing with the chain in depths and found that I actually was looking a lot more health very quickly. Ranged enemies really dropped me down quickly. As soon as crystal plate went back on, felt invincible again. I didn't have a chance to train up dodging to see if that made a difference though. Probably going to stick with the crystal.

Definitely noticing lack of MR as getting paralyzed every now & then. I got crossbows trained up to 18 and have a bunch of enchant weapons to make something +9. Also just got gifted triple crossbow so thinking about enchanting that to +9 and branding it.

I find it difficult to imagine that the difference between 49 and 43 AC is easily noticeable. You probably just experienced some variance. There's lots in crawl.

I'd stick to the arbalest probably, because of the XP cost to get the triple crossbow dps higher. Also, brand first, enchant if you like the ego. You might end up with crappy brand like venom. In that case I wouldn't waste the EW scrolls.

What ranged enemies did you encounter? Cen/Yak-taur bands can't see invisible, which your chain mail would provide! (They still probably know where you are and will keep shooting, but they will miss more often.)

A few comments
Don't train Axes above 26 unless your Fighting is 27.
Train some Dodging.
Try to find another Exec. Axe for Ancient Lich (it can have paralysis).
Put remaining stat points into Dex.
I would use ring with rCorr by default (or ring with rN+ if it exists), rF++ is not that important unless you are fighting Cerebov or Orb of Fire.

Overestimated: AC, GDS

There SInv is also relevant. Fighting Ghost Moths is an absolute pain compared to literally anything else in that branch.

its worth nothing that chain mail has 34% gdr while CPA has 48% gdr. combat will feel much less swingy in cpa
