How bad is inaccuracy?

I found this amulet of Wariness {Inacc rPois Int+4 Dex+4}, is it worth wearing until I run into something better, or should I just drop it right away?

It's -5 to hit (for all kinds of attacks: melee, ranged, conjurations etc.)

Since you are mostly using hexes, necromancy spells (that don't depend on accuracy) and stabbing, it's ok for you, until you find something better.

Thanks, I did look up the amulet, but had no idea how bad "-5 to hit" was.

It equivalent to Slay-10 because slaying bonus/malus is 1d(slay), whereas inaccuracy is flat -5.

It's similar to, but not exactly equivalent to... it's plausible that -5 would not be enough to make you miss, but -10 would be, so -10 slay might reduce your net accuracy by more than the flat -5 that inacc provides, it all depends on how accurate you are in the first place, and how hard it is to hit what you're trying to hit. The reverse is also possible (That -1 through -4 might not be enough to make you miss, but -5 would be) so inacc could also be worse than -10 slay.

The truth of the matter is that the reduced chances to hit is somehwere between "negligable" and "a whole heckuva lot" depending on what stage of the game you are at (it's worse earlier than it is later) and how hard the thing you are trying to hit is to hit.

It'd depend on how far along you are, but honestly a flat -5 to accuracy isn't that big of a deal. To get the best results you should fsim with and without the amulet, but this character has a +9 dagger with 10 short blades and 6 fighting, with 22 dex.

Even at this low level that's a to hit of around 49 (depending on rolls), and then roll 0 to 48, and finally subtract 5. So if we assume his average result is a roll of 24, then losing 5 is around 20% off. Significant, sure, but I wouldn't call that horrifically bad. As they get more fighting/dex (and if they ever train short blades higher than 10) it'll increase. On a more "pure melee" character who's a bit further along in the game with roughly level 20 fighting/weapon skill, the -5 becomes much more tolerable.

Keep in mind stabs can't miss, and the character is a vampire enchanter.

FWIW I remember that after saccing an eye with Ru, melee still killed dudes pretty okay

of course I also had Ru so there's that

Thanks all for the comments about comparisons with slaying etc.

But, since this is DCA, it's worth repeating: in my opinion, inaccuracy is not really relevant for this character, because it relies on hexes, stabs and necromancy; none of which depend much, if at all, on how accurate your attacks are.

Thanks for all the tips. Stuff seemed to die just fine while I was wearing it (probably because all the dangerous mobs where confused and fighting their own weapons anyway), and I ran into reflection a bit later, so swapped it for that.
