Request for advice for tackling player ghost

So I found this ghost on the Orcish Mines:

The apparition of Malvoorn the Fencer, a journeyman Demonspawn Berserker of
Trog.
 
Max HP: 115
AC +++++ ++++
EV ++
MR +++
 
It looks dangerous.
It is immune to poison and negative energy; very resistant to fire and cold;
and resistant to steam.
It can see invisible.
It is intelligent.
It can fly.
It can hit for up to 29 damage.
It is incapable of using stairs


He looks kind of scary. I have several wands (but no skill atm), I have Ru (but no max piety) and potions don't heal me as much as they should. His AC seems very big. I have a plate mail that gives me +2 AC (for a total of 22). I could use wands of acid, scattershot or lighting, use apocalipse and down a !might of !agi.
What should I do? Avoid him? Fight? If I fight him, what are the best tactical options?

problem is its in the mines. There are four shops that could have interesting loot. However, OM2 + this player ghost seem kind of scary. And it must be difficult doing them with him around.

Lure ghost to stairs. Go down another set of stairs. Clear orc. If he shows up again, repeat. If your stair situation is not conducive to this, tank him w/consumables on stairs (if you arent willing to wait a couple levels for orc loot)

Rule of thumb: if you never die you will eventually win. So its almost always better to play safe

I frequently forget this rule.

Has anyone compiled the murphy's laws of DCSS? Like:
  • Hitting a death yak with a quarterstaff of chaos will hasten it.
  • The next hit will make it invisible.
  • The unidentified potion you drink to save your life will be be a potion of Brilliance.

A lot of my stupidest deaths have been in portals i was ill-equipped for where i recognized pressing on was dangerous and pressed on anyways. You always end up w/ more loot and xp than you need. (this is where the old dont-do-elf meme comes from) (i always do elf tho lol)

YASD, killed by the Lernean Hydra. Tried to run away but it is fast. Downed several potions of healing and a potion of flying. Apocalypse didn't refresh soon enough to try to kill it or at least stun it to be able to flee. Sadly, I had no potion of haste and of course, being a Formicid means no Tele.

This is pretty niche advice, but TLH dies more-or-less automatically to a phantom mirror. If one has spawned in my game, I'll always bring it to S:4.

In a similar vein to the ghost issue you really have no reason (other than the obvious one: convenience) to touch either lair branch end vault until you've done both lair branches through floor 3. Most of the time you are powerful enough to clear S/N/P: 4 w/o too much trouble as soon as you reach it, but especially as a Fo you should be cautious about overextending into a situation you can't easily walk away from, and swamp terrain + fast enemies (in this case hydras in water) + no shafting + no diggable walls = exactly that.

And while it's difficult/dependent on the layout, if you can, try to flee from a hydra over non-water tiles, and then it won't be hasted. You may have no choice when there's a lot of water, but it can help you get to stairs if there's at least some path of mostly land. Remember chasing monsters don't always take the same tiles you did, so what matters is the tile that the hydra takes, not you. You also need to avoid water if you aren't flying/swimming, of course.

I did try to go over land tiles. When I reached a zone with lots of water, I drank a potion of flying.
In hindsight, I never had seen the Learnean Hydra before or I would never have tried doing the last level of the swamp without having done other parts like amaril said.

As far as the death is concerned...

That's quite a lot of enemies. I suspect you could pull back to the stairs more. If I'm patient I rarely have to fight more than one or two enemies at the same time in swamp. So when you attract attention, immediately run walk back towards the stairs. Fight when the monster catches up with you if the circumstances are OK. Then repeat. Also, to fight fewer enemies, make sure you use those antennae!

Hydras, drakes and dragons are slowed by cold attacks, so you could've tried that wand of iceblast to maintain distance.

No scrolls is rough, otherwise fear might have worked. Lerny has 120 MR though, so maybe not.

Similarly, your Evo is probably too low to use confusion on Lerny.

I'm not sure about using apocalypse in that situation. Leap is great for Fo, especially near stairs. It might have bought you more time.

Lerny gives a warning message from the distance, something about 'crashing trees'. That's a good signal to stick close to stairs. You can always shout from the stairs and see who comes.

The character...

You have quite a lot of strength, more than you need really. With dodging sacrificed, put stats into Int to learn useful utiliy spells! Passage of Golubria is great and works for Fo. Again, a low level ice spell can slow hydras/drakes/dragons. Freeze never misses for example. There are quite a few useful low level spells, although unfortunately for you summons and animated minions were out.

You have no real way to do ranged damage. Get some throwing or something.

Your AC seems kinda low, considering you are wearing plate. Not sure why. Did you have a lot of drain?

All that said, my most recent death was to Lerny because I was stupid.

Also, TLH doesn't see invisible, which may be useful to run away or setup a fight.
