GrEE - what to do next

Hello all,

This is furthest I've ever made it. Hoping to make this my first win. Got 2 runes, cleared vault 1-4 and depths. Heading to elves then maybe vault 5 (died too many times there). Looking for some advice on which way to go, what to train next. Have GrEE that can spam shatter. Also picked up some pretty sweet plate armor that I'm getting close to being able to cast shatter in. Gives him almost 60 AC. Have some OK rings too, but not sure which are ideal.

Should I go for firestorm? Something else? Have found a bunch of bookstores so can probably find most spells.

Well, I would definitely go for the plate. You already have all the damaging spells you need (LCS, Fireball, Bolt of Magma). If you really want Shatter you can go for it but it is in no way required. I wouldn't go for Fire Storm if you just want 3 runes. Train more Armour: You'll get one point of AC for every 22/13 levels of Armour, and if you had a helmet that would be 22/14, any helmets around?

Get Blink to 1%. Some good support spells: Regeneration, Animate Skeleton, Swiftness, Repel Missiles (although with low EV not so effective).

You have low MR so be very careful around paralyzers, vault sentinels, banishers etc.

Got mutated horns so can't wear helmets. but can't seem to kill much without using spells. I grabbed swiftness and will grab regen. At this point, feel like I need to use melee as plan B. Is there much diff between AC at 60+ vs AC at 40'ish? Do I need to develop melee?

That demon whip should be good enough for killing stuff you don't want to waste MP on. You have it at mindelay so you don't need more weapon skill. AC 60 is much better than AC 40 imo. Put the last stat point into Str.

I often find Slime easier than Vaults 5 as a conjuration user. But if you have never done slimes before, there are several suprising dangers to watch out for, such as azure jellies which can do a lot of cold damage and malmutating shining eyes which can be more easily dealt with by area of effect attacks and long range bolt attacks before they can get line of sight. Unfortunately I think shatter does a lot less damage to slimes.

I think gelatinous bodies have some shatter resistance. What you really want in Slime, if you're going to take TRJ out with conjurations, is bolt spells. He spawns allies from damage and they'll block LCS and Iron Shot.

Edit: or immolation and direct damage to one of the allies.

Most bolt spells will do. Press ctrl-f and see if you can find a shop with a spellbook with bolt of fire. If you cannot, bolt of ice, or bolt of draining, or lightling can be good alternatives. Mainly, you want to be able to kill the eyes of confusion and mutation before they can get line of sight to you. Bolts are useful to kill The Royal Jelly when it retreats behind its own spawns as well. I only recommend to do Slimes as a change of pace to Vaults as you said you die to Vaults a lot. To be honest though with AC 59 and the reliable spells that you do have is good enough to get through Vaults safely.

As jellies having low AC and fighting in a corridor with stone walls, LRD works well against TRJ. This char doesn't strictly need a bolt spell or why the fuck why ?immo - especially without rf+.
Shatter does 1/3 damage against flying or jellies monsters. Don't bother to cast it in Slimes.

Anyway, for a char like this V:5 is certainly much easier than Slimes.

You should absolutely train melee, because the skills are almost entirely overlapping:

"mage": fighting (for hp), dodging, some armor, spellcasting + spell schools. "some armor" depends on what armor you're wearing as a mage, many stay light so they don't need much, but gargoyles love to stack AC, so you're already in a plate anyways, so you want more armor skill.

"fighter": Fighting, dodging, armor, weapon skill

So basically the only difference is training one skill - your weapon. You already have 12 M&F and a demon whip, so you already are a melee character. You could aim for a slightly bigger weapon (I really love eveningstars, although they are rare), but that whip is perfectly fine. Some more fighting/dodging/armor skill would help out a lot.

The other nice thing about keeping your weapon is
when a problem comes along
you must whip it

but I like tasonir's advice: train some armour, crystal spear dudes you don't like, whip monsters in their faces.

also also (others may disagree here) I might learn Stone Arrow for a cheap, quiet way to damage monsters while they move towards you. You really don't need to, but I'd usually rather spend a turn damaging monsters when they can't hurt me than just waiting around.
