newish player help

Hey there!

I have yet to win a game, but I got my best character yet going (see below). Was going to try and make a hybrid caster but then got some +5 crystal plate armor so abandoned that path for now. A few questions.

1) what to skill next - was thinking about shields
2) is it even worth pursuing casting - i was going to go for blink at some point
3) does it make sense to change gods? If so, to what? Also, any advice to survive the penance?

Train more dodging.
Stop training shields at 4.0 (maybe a bit higher in case you get drained), until you find a bigger shield.
Don't aim for spells. Train evocations instead. Blink is fine, but you don't need it.
Don't change gods.

Use your id scrolls on your wands.
You seem to have never used your rod of clouds. Use it often; it's very good. If you find a recharge scroll, consider recharging it.

Got it. Thanks. Giving up on spells. Upgraded that rod with several scrolls of recharging and going to give it a whirl. I did find regular shield with reflect so in process of training that up a bit. Will focus on dodging & evocations.

1. found crossbow manual & have several decent ones stashed around - worth training?
2. trying to figure out if slaying +5 on that ring is better than my ring that gives +4 dex & rElec

Just cleared elven hall 3. Went to crypt and ran into Mara right at entrance, got scared & ran away. Currently pursuing depths...

1. Sure, crossbows are good, especially when you have a manual and Heroism.
2. Yes, +5 slaying is better. Just switch to rElec when facing storm dragons, spark wasps or electric golems.

As OP as ranged combat is, I don't recommend switching to crossbows when you already have a +9 vorpal eveningstar and a sacred scourge

Mara is easy to kill with stairs and you have a sacred scourge, though it would be better to have rF+.

Wield-id the sacred scourge.
Use your id scrolls on your wands.
After you get shields to around 15.0, train more evo, dodging, and armour,
Drop the dire flail; it's two-handed, and you've committed to one-hander with shields.

Looking like a strong character and go Hill Orcs! First time I've ever seen someone besides me play them on the forum lolz.
Answers: 1) Train Dodging, armor, fighting maces. I personally wouldn't go for shields until later (extended?).
2) I wouldn't... maybe suboptimal
3) You don't need to change gods until the extended game. Its just too much risk for little reward okwaru is chill.
Random Advice: 1) If you can camp the stairs you will win. Go down the stairs, wait till one enemy reaches you and then go up the stairs and beat it to death, rest and repeat. It may not be glorious but its effective. Cowards win Crawl
2) Resist the urge to fight anything that's name is in red... just don't do it. (how I die -30% of time)
3) Remember your panic buttons, blink, teleport, invisible, etc Also scrolls of fog are surprisingly useful. Odds are you can escape somehow.
4) Antimagic branded weapons to turn orbs of fire into puddles.

Evocations to 14 will keep the rod useful for a while. Good against packs.
I would train Dodge and Shield at the same time. You want at least 20 EV with that crystal plate & ring equipped. And at least 20, preferably 25+ SH with that shield of reflection equiped.

At that point you could easily train Dodge and Shield to skill level 27 and probably be fine.

You can cast anywhere from level 1 to level 3 spells easily with heavy investment. Not really worth it, but simple things like swiftness/passwall/regeneration could be a nice to have for the orb run.

@1158511: He's already wearing a shield, and has 13 of the 15 (ideal) skill to use it, so there's no sense in not training those final two levels. After shield skill is 15, I'd probably train more armor/fighting/dodging, in roughly that order. Try to keep armor/fighting about 3-5 levels over dodging, eventually getting to roughly 25 armor/fighting and 20 dodging. Feel free to take breaks from this to train evocations or any other skill you feel you need, but for a melee character, you generally get weapon skill going first, and then spend most of the rest of the game training armor/dodging/fighting. Mix in invocations/evocations and possibly some minor spellcasting or a ranged weapon as appropriate.
