Midgame Hybrid Help

So what exactly should a mid-game draconian hybrid look like? I have the level 6-7 fire/conjuration spells but now what? I originally was going to try for fire storm but general consensus on past threads is that's a terrible idea. So what exactly should I be training? Should I wield the staff of fire/power and then wield a sword when monsters get into melee? I recently discovered that having your highest skill being spell power is a terrible idea XD.

Going for fire storm is not a terrible idea, it is a bad idea if you want a hybrid as there won't be enough XP until late game.

Becoming a hybrid is quite easy - train long blades until min delay for that greatsword, more fighting and dodging, that's all you need.
After that you can go for fire storm if you want, hybrid with fire storm is more enjoyable than hybrid without it ;)

Fire Storm eats exp too much for hybrids.

Spellcast 24, Fire 25, Conj 25 is criteria for Fire Storm <5% at your INT w/o Vehumet.
This consumes >75,000 skill points for Draconians.

If you want to be 'hybrid' who put "enough" skill points to combat skills, then you'll need at least >120,000 skill points.


Draconians get total 75,000 skill points normally when they reach XL 26.
When they reach XL 27, they normally get total 82,250 skill points. You'll reach cumulative 120,000 SP (= 2,500,000 XP) at Zot:5 normally.

The easiest way for you would be to train more Fighting, Dodging and either mindelaying a 2h sword or training Shields to 10-15 and getting a branded shield and a demon blade.

Learn Irradiate if you can - the malmutate debuff is great, and damage is excellent.

Right, I forgot it is new Sif Muna, it does not protect from miscasts anymore because of not-maxed piety. Previously it was possible to use fire storm at 15-20% and still be fine

Basically, this already looks like a midgame hybrid. Beelining for Fire Storm is an option but for a more 'hybrid' feel, put that EXP into defences and your melee skill. Doesn't have to be until min.delay if you're not intending to kill dangerous things from up-close.

The definition of 'hybrid' shifts as you get familiar with how crawl works. For a newbie, just training melee skills at all is a good first step. Indeed, an 'average conjurer' IS a hybrid - unusual (and short-lived) is the conjurer that completely specialises in just blaster skills.

Having defenses is not enough to make a hybrid IMHO, a hybrid uses weapons vs dangerous monsters and does not care about being silenced or out of MP at all.
