Hunter starts generally can't clear lair with just ammo unless the dungeon floor is exceptionally kind or they are slings.

I do not want to remember my CeHu which set out to prove exactly this by learning 3 ranged weapon skills. My sanity broke long before that CeHu.

I don't know why you'd call melee skill "wasted" but yeah, you can probably do it if you're willing to thwack things with 0-skill weapons and reset lots of fights. A lucky weapon find (elec, venom) will make it easier. As a challenge condition, you can probably make it go but it'll be way more annoying than just training some melee.

If, instead, you want to kill things using only arrows, you probably can't unless the floor god is insanely kind and you also run away from everything you don't need to kill.
