Got a pretty badass mage rolling after countless deaths, but of course im missing the last ingredient - Necromutation which hasnt spawned. About to buy a beneficial mutation for 3500, but afraid to get malmutated to shit when I go abyss and so on since I got some pretty damn good mutations. Any spells I should have that is missing? I plan on doing dispel undead and aura of abjuration next.

Haste, controlled blink, passage of golubria are good spells to have for anyone and especially a squishy wizard going for 15 runes.

You have the ability to one-shot almost all malmutators, so I wouldn't worry to much about getting necromut. I wouldn't bother with dispel undead in your case, aura of abjuration is solid.

Dispel Undead is a legit good spell regardless of Aura of Abjuration - the two actually have quite different use cases, once again. Dispel Undead wrecks major non-summoned undead threats like Tzitzimitl, almost everything in the Tomb...

I concur with the comment about low MR. If you really know what you are doing and what the major MR-based threats are, you could probably have a single pip of MR and still win, but I'd easily sacrifice 1-2 pips of spell power and take off that robe for something else (especially if you already have another Robe of the Archmagi or some good +Int light armor).

My advice was not general but aimed at the OP's situation (I also should have worded that a bit clearer). OP already has glaciate, firestorm, OOD and iron shot online; dispel undead is a good spell but probably not necessary in this situation.

I'd like to stress this in particular. I've had around 5-6 extended deaths so far, I think - all but 1-2 were caused exactly by this. Seriously, unless you are totally fine with losing your character, there is absolutely no need to tangle with Pan/Hell bosses, especially not in melee, if you can get the rune through a series of blinks and apportations, or (as in my case once) accidentally teleporting right next to the rune and being able to apport it and teleport away.

Amnesia all the redundant conjurations and learn Haste, etc. Spellforged Servitor might be fun.

Definitely find another armour (or otherwise get to at least MR+++).

Darkness is good.

Personally, I am a fan of Necromutation to prevent torment *and* malmutations, but others are not. Statue Form is a potential substitute, but only gives rN+, torment immunity 50% of the time, and no rMutation, with the big drawback of slow (the big advantages are more AC, +30% HP, and lots more melee/ranged damage).

I agree, it's kind of a shame. Personally, I prefer my proposal in the Pan/Hell merge thread (the runes should pop out of the lords only after they die, which would be a different behavior from the runes just lying around in other rune branches), though on the other hand, Apportation really has only three important uses that actually come in handy more than once in a blue moon: ninjaing runes, apporting valuable stuff in the Abyss to make sure you get it before you are randomly teleported away, and for turncount speedruns (which doesn't matter for design). Fixing rune ninjaing would only leave #2 as a relevant function from a design perspective, which would mean Apportation would be a kind of niche spell with not much use... though as a level 1 utility spell, perhaps that's how it should be.

Statue form gives torment resistance 50% of the time, but never completely prevents it. You are likely thinking of the demonspawn mutation.

I personally prefer statue form because it gives you insane melee damage, which isn't relevant here, but I also prefer it because it takes so much less XP. Esp on this char with some earth to get statue form online faster.

I believe it is optimal to go for Necromutation with DE of Vehumet. Statue Form is worse for the character because its primary way of killing monsters is not melee so being slow means less damage (unlike with melee and especially UC).

It's optimal to be immune to torment, have extra AC and MR. Potions are almost useless in extended for character who kills with spells (brilliance is rare, Haste spell is easy to get for casters and wand of heal wounds is not too rare to get at this stage).

dispel undead is more dangerous than torment and is common in most places where torment is common

necromut also requires large investment in transmutations which will otherwise be an unused school

Dispel undead requires line of fire, has much shorter range, is much more rare than torment (a single fiend has it) and does not bring you to danger level with just 2 casts.

I have never gotten anywhere near that many skills trained up that much on anything but a character that does multiple zigs, because I want to live my life and am not willing to spend almost 40 hours on a single run(of any game, really). Most of my 15 rune games have only 4 or 5 skills above 20... here you have 8, and higher turncount than even my character who cleared 5 zigs... I do not think your extended endgame experience is normal. Most people are simply not getting this much XP because you have to stretch the game out a lot further than it needs to be to get it...

I can agree that generally torment immunity is a reasonable exchange for susceptibility to dispel undead. But with necromutation you spend a bunch of experience in transmutations that only serves this one spell, and in lichform you cannot use revivification, death's door, sublimation of blood, regeneration, or quaff*. That's not usually reasonable imo, even though torment immunity is nice in pan/hells/tomb.

*A few potions of magic, some potions of curing, and CBoE is a great method for MP restoration, especially if you don't have Sif channeling. Takes a lot of evocations, but then you get a *lot* of added value with that. Some other potions come in handy too (e.g. buff pots, cancellation).

Because you don't need to cast revivification and death's door. Sublimation of blood or potions of magic mean you are a fragile caster which is a bad idea in extended, it's much better to use a vorpal or even antimagic battleaxe or something and kill everything in view ignoring those tormentors and neqoxecs. Regeneration is nice true, yet you can use amulet of regeneration and spam high level spells without any thinking about hunger or eating during fights. Pan/hell/tomb is what I call extended indeed.
I agree about CBoE yet it takes less XP to get necromutation for a caster than to make CBoE useful, at low/mid Evo it decreases MP instead of adding it provided we train necromancy for revivification anyway (you can be fine with Transmutations 16 while using CBoE with Evo 16 is often a bad idea). Potion of curing heals rot and poison, you are immune to those in lichform. Confusion is deadly, I agree, so using necromutation as pure caster with less than MR++++ is a bad idea.
Buff pots still can be applied, I do it often, quaff agility/might/resistance, cast Necromutation and kill everything.

I guess we find different things annoying. I don't mind eating occasionally, juggling necromutation on/off bothers me more. I like the safety net of DDoor and Rev much more than the damage mitigation of necromutation. (I have tried necromutation set ups, including with old sif channeling abuse. It works but isn't strongest imo, and I also find it more finicky. YMMV of course)

Really, I think it is reasonable to set up your character in the manner you find least annoying for extended. It just drags on so much. There's more than one way to make a character for extended that has to screw up very badly in order to die.

Yes, I think I understand what you are talking about. I consider Necromutation very powerful but extremely annoying. Casting a spell 826 times (without monsters in view) is crazy and if you want to play optimally like I was playing in that game 3 years ago, you will cast it, then will swap to staff of energy, evoke it a couple of times to restore MP, will switch to staff of death, will cast Necromutation again (Necromutation is Necromancy enhancer), will switch to staff of energy again, will evoke it several times again and finally will switch to either staff of conjurations or power. Have I already told that it is crazy? ;)

Finally did it as a pure caster. Before hitting the pits, abyss, Pan, and Hell I decided to hit the zigg for a couple of levels to get some loot and bail to not die since I play carelessly. I usually only bother with let alone go a full 27 clear after getting all runes, but half way through I have ascertained true power and went ahead and finished all 27. I entered the dungeon as a mere apprentice of the arcane arts laughed at by my peers and immediately written off as dead by them after taking my leave, but have emerged as a grandmaster archmage with max spellpower on ice and fire magic. Now with the orb of Zot in hand, nothing stands in my way of ascension to God hood. The world is now mine and all will bow before and fear Lord Ukuos!

So did two people in this thread both say statue form as a worked/didn't work mechanic against torment?

Statue form gives torment resistance 50% of the time, but never completely prevents it.

It reduces the damage you take by 50%, every time. And it adds a pip of rN, which helps a bit further assuming you aren't maxed. This imho is basically the same as removing it as it can never really do enough damage to really threaten you on its own, but YMMV.

That being said, it's definitely intended for melee characters and the slow effect with no boost to magic abilities will definitely hurt you a lot if you're going to try to cast a lot of spells with it. Don't do that. You can either learn some melee (perfectly affordable if you're comparing it to learning necromutation) or just go with the nuke-tormentors-from-orbit approach. Necromutation works as well but I usually see that as more of a zig strategy than 15 runes, although it can be done for either.

Necromutation also helps for food reasons if your character is set up to spam lvl 8/9 spells. I know I've had Spriggans spam Tornado/channeling enough in extended that I would have run out of food if I had to cover the food costs with permafood.
