Sublimation of blood usage

How do you use Sublimation of blood with non-Makhleb?
When I try to use it with "pure" caster, those usually have low HP so it is a bad idea to lose 50 HP to get 50 MP.
When I try to use it with hybrid, I still lose 50 HP instead of attacking in melee or with launchers, seems bad to me again.
The only good use for me is out of fight, when I killed all monsters in view without losing many MP and almost no HP, in this case I can cast Regeneration and then Sublimation after getting full HP to speed up resting. It is not going to decrease my HP by 50 because I lack only a few MP.

When you have 30 pets doing all your work for you so there is no possibility of you ever taking damage from enemies. Requires recognition of what monsters to stop this routine for, e.g. smite targetters. Casting Regen is a big plus.

Here is a morgue of a Felid who cast Sublimation of Blood 320 times. This was one of the most terrifying characters I have ever played, because SoB would sometimes eat up half of my health.

Sublimation of Blood and Death Channel stabilized the character. The cat had enough conjurations + vehu to kill any single target, but did not have enough staying power. Sublimation of Blood + Regeneration + Death Channel lets you largely stay behind a horde of minions, and lets you keep advancing before your minions expire.

I used bloodsub+regen on naga "pure caster", was pretty good. It removed a lot of tedium of resting in abyss/hell.

Death channel summons nowadays disappear swiftly after the target of the spell had died.

Personally, I used it (SoB) on any character that has high-level attack spells and good HP. I also used to play lots of Nagas. Coincidence???

You cast sublimation of blood when you have HP and would like to have more MP. The damage is small and quickly recovered by Regeneration. If you don't care about turncount and are already managing your MP reasonably, then sublimation doesn't matter much outside Hell etc., sure.

Yes, and you cast Regen when you have MP and would like to have more HP :)

The damage is non-linear, last time I checked source code there was potentially unlimited loop which was stopped by max MP and zero HP. It is possible to lose huge amount of HP. I remember I had very nasty surprises.

If you don't care about turncount and are already managing your MP reasonably, then sublimation doesn't matter much outside Hell etc., sure.

The damage is linear with MP recovered. It doesn't stop at 0 HP, it stops at 10% of your current HP (so if you have 100 HP it won't take you below 10) or 1.

Recovered MP is non-linear.
10% of current HP? That explains my problems. Very bad spell, don't cast it with last 2 MP when you have 50 max.

I'm currently playing a pure robecaster HE and, as the action log shows, i'm using SoB a lot (combining it with Regen spell and TLA; the later isn't much of a sacrifice since there were no decent armours all game anyway). Reason? On this kind of character (namely, a HE offensive robecaster who dipped necromancy, whether for Bolt of Draining like i did or for other spells), HP aren't much of a life guarantee; offence and active defences, both via spells, are much safer, and SoB powers them when you need them. That might sound strange; but if you have 100 hp, 12 AC, 25 EV and 10 SH in post-Lair, then you either get hit or you don't; if you do get hit by something legitimately threatening (be it a deep elf caster or, even worse, a melee threat), it doesn't really matter if you were at 100/100 HP or at 70/100 — you're now at WAY TOO LOW TO RISK ANOTHER HIT LIKE THAT. If i didn't realise that while playing a wet paper caster, i'd be dead several times over. Of course, you don't cast SoB after you get hit for TOO MUCH (that would be a job for consumables). You do it before it happens (and when you can afford to whiffle one or two times, casting it for lowly 3 mana recovered or so), you get down to 70/100 hp but get 22 more mana to your 34 that you've already mostly spent on your mana-intensive killdudes, and you either do unto others before they do unto you (offence can be a great defence, and an offensive caster can run out of big guns before all threatening enemies on the screen are gone) or you use your mana for active defences (mostly positioning, but even recasting safety buffs might save you more HP over a battle than you've lost on SoBing for them) and save yourself from running out of consumables. I bet SoB+regen items+Controlled blink is next best thing to wizmode.
Of course that can be made less relevant by Optimal Play in which you only fight enemies one on one, don't fight beefy dangerous enemies who might take more than your mana in bolts if you get unlucky with bolts missing/damage rolls, and therefore have no problems with having enough mana for every fight you pick. I'm not good enough to do that, and seeing myself in a fight with some 6 mana left, full HP and several enemies still standing (not most dangerous ones, of course, but still unpleasant to melee with a rod) is a common enough occurence to have a spell that lets me go "Okay, gimme 20 more mana and none of them gets to melee me alive".

I've also been casting SoB+Regen instead of normal rest after mana-intensive, HP-safe fights, but that might be a bad habit to get into.

Sorry, I don't get it. If 100 HP does not help to live, then 70 HP after SoB makes it even worse. If you can afford to spend 22 mana while being at 70 HP, it means you were in safe spot from the very beginning. Are you casting ranged spells at melee-only monsters? That's trivial, you don't need SoB for that except some convenience to avoid retreating to replenish MP. You still increased your odds of dying by casting SoB because some Yaktaurs or whatever can come into view.

PS. In my current game I survived with 1HP on D:8, every HP counts ;)

Both 100 HP and 70 HP turn into "I did something wrong, time to use consumables to escape" if you get hit for 50 HP and don't matter at all if you don't, which is partly a matter of EV/SH ratings being a chance to negate damage instead of semi-guaranteedly reducing it (a high-EV, low-AC character is considered just as well-defended as a high-AC low-EV one and takes a roughly equal number of hits to die at average, but instead of being mindful of attrition has to be mindful of not letting a lucky hit occur twice in a row), partly a matter of positioning and effective dudeskilling. Getting 22 more mana out of SoB on such a character is nearly just as good as getting 22 more mana out of channeling (and IIRC channeling is usually less efficient in terms of mana per turn) or out of a potion, and it's a bit of a strawman to say these are useless because you can just retreat to replenish MP. Having 30 less HP may increase my odds of dying if some Yaktaurs arrive from behind while i'm airstriking a white dragon like no tomorrow (or more precisely, like i don't want to know how much will his breath hurt if it connects past EV), but having 22 more mana means i'm free to: shoot through them with a Bolt of Cold, killing them in two casts if they've shown up from behind a corner; Summon Butterflies, close a bit of distance to yaktaurs, bolt through them; lay a freezing cloud over yaktaurs, Summon Butterflies, watch them passively die while finishing off the dragon; blink, if it seems to be advantageous (not a common occurence with Yaktaurs, admittedly); if nothing else, get up the Ozocubu's which i didn't cast before because dragon woke up as soon as i've seen it and i've been intending to kill it before it got to me; and still have enough mana left to finish dealing with the dragon as well, only risking one more frost breath from it because of a turn or two spent neutralising yaktaurs.

While none of these options are guaranteed to work (none i've listed really works if it all happens in the open cavern), if they aren't applicable i'll just pick the "use consumables to escape" option; whereas if i'm out of mana, consumables are (on a full caster) the only viable option for me to pick, so they get used even if i've got 100 HP. Of course i'm assuming that yaktaurs, while threatening, can't kill me in one turn due to EV and SH; if they're so dangerous to my character that they can, it's job for consumables either way.

I'm not assuming a level of optimal play where replenishing MP solely through retreating endlessly yet safely is a trivial matter, since i'm not capable of this; nor is it my intention to argue for SoB's usefulness in such a play, since i have no qualified opinion on whether or not it's so. I've provided a perspective on how i, a newbie, use it, as requested in the opening post. I'm sorry if that's not what you were asking for.

I know for a fact that dealing with caustic shrikes two at a time had been mana-intensive enough for me to be sure that i couldn't do it without SoB's extra mana (and i've had to escape via consumables from one of three such fights due to picking my battlefield poorly; that went ugly, but if i were to avoid SoB, giving me more HP for that fight at the cost of not having mana to keep doing anything useful, i don't think it would let me keep those consumables) at the point that i've met them, and i'm not sure retreating from them, either to replenish MP or simply to survive, is trivial without using up permanent resourses.

I see, that's risky play IMHO. If you get 50 damage and have 100 HP remaining, instead of mere running away like I would do you cast SoB and get to 70 HP remaining claiming that EV and SH are good enough to guarantee you won't get 2 hits in a row and that those hits will be for 50 damage again, not a single hit for 80 or two hits for 40 damage each or whatever.
Casters are very easy to play if you are not reluctant to retreat early: if you got hit for 33% of your damage OR if you spent half of your mana, it is already time to retreat for me. I will rest to full HP/MP and will try again, hoping that EV and SH will protect me from getting 33% damage this time.
I wouldn't use SoB vs Caustic Strikes, they are too fast and deal crazy damage. Or did you have some zombies as meat shield and were shooting through them with bolt of draining? Usually I read teleport immediately and while waiting for teleport try to kill one of them. Then I return and repeat. This way I cannot die because I am never low on HP.
Caustik strikes are probably second most dangerous monsters in the game right after orbs of fire so I wouldn't recommend saving consumables when dealing with them. Brilliance, magic, haste, agility, resistance. Not all of them of course, they will kill you while you are quaffing all those ;)

No, i won't. First, my example with 70 vs 100 hp was relating to a phase when the character had 100 max hp. To be clear: i DO NOT SoB when my hp aren't at or near max, and i most certainly do not SoB if i took 50 damage (unless the threat got neutralised somehow, e. g. by succumbing to a freezing cloud right after swinging — even then, a Regen spell is first priority). If i take 50 damage, it means i need to take measures to make sure i don't get hit again, and i need to take them NOW; not stand around spending turns on SoB (which can recover puny 3 mana for 2 mana cost if it's in the mood) and bringing my HP even lower. It is not an appropriate time to cast SoB at all, and i fully agree with the reasons you've listed for that. Nor would it be an appropriate time to use Channeling, even though it doesn't cost HP; which shows HP cost isn't the main concern here (the fact that you're standing around taking damage is).

The way i try to play this character, the priority is to not be hit at all; and that is something SoB helps with. It is cast BEFORE i get hit for 50 hp, and before i fully run out of mana, so i don't run out of options that give me the upper hand. It is cast if i'm in the fight, but i know i can afford the action cost even if it whiffs; same as Channeling. It pays for itself if the extra spells i get to cast prevent more hp than it took.

It's actually quite rare to SoB yourself for -50 hp in a single casting. Outside of safe resting, it only happened to me about three times so far. If it happens, i treat it as any other emergency (e. g. the same as if a yaktaur appeared on the edge of the screen and immediately hit me for the same amount of damage): a reason to pull off and to feel free to use emergency items. Again, it is a far less frequent happening than eating a hit for the same amount of damage due to bad play or two bolt misses in a row.

Nobody said i don't retreat because i have SoB. In fact, it helps in agressive retreat via Freezing Cloud; if i see a monster on the edge of LoS, place a fCloud between it and myself and start running the opposite way while laying Freezing Clouds behind me (at a cost of letting the enemy one square closer each time i do that, of course), there's only so much distance i can ran before running-and-hurting-the-enemy-via-fCloud turns into ordinary running-while-recovering-MP-while-the-threat-recovers-its-HP-and-catches-up-with-you-via-energy-randomisation. SoB means that by spending an additional turn to recover my MP, i can spam almost twice as much freezing clouds and i'm kinda more free to reset the distance via uncontrolled blinks (which can put the cloud back between you and a monster that caught up with you).

I didn't have zombies (nor Bolt of Draining anymore, had swapped it for Bolt of Cold quite a bit ago, so my main killdudes against shrikes was Airstrike with freezing cloud probably helping; i DID have Simulacra in the first and second fights, but they didn't last two turns against shrikes), but in the third fight i've spammed Spellforged Servitor as a meatshield (it's been in a corridor). It's a spell you'd barely call spammable without SoB, and i think it prevented more damage from shrikes than i've used up on SoB. Shrikes DID deal a lot of damage, that's true (that was my first game with them spawning, which is also accountable for me losing one of three fights); that only magnified my need to have enough mana to stay in control. I agree that fighting them at all was an unnecessary risk and the most risky thing i did in that game, though; but i've been very mindful of my HP and when to say "NOW i have to use consumables", so spending HP on SoB has been not a matter of being closer to death but a matter of having less buffer (and therefore less time) before i need to escape.


BTW, does (a potion of) Haste make you tele faster after reading a scroll, or merely let you act more while you'll tele in same determined time?

The latter, teleport time is measured in aut, not player actions:

Teleport delay is 2+d3 in units of 10 aut. Add another d3 if it's controlled, an 80% chance of another 4+d10 if you are in abyss, and 4+d5 if you have the Orb of Zot (this delay will not trigger in Abyss unless the 80% chance failed).


Similarly, chei characters can often teleport after 2 moves.

Last night I was spectating a very good player using Sublimation of Blood with DE blaster of Vehumet in Hellcrawl and it looks like main benefit of the spell is ability to cast loud spells (Fireball) without retreating. It was scary to see HP drop from 101 (full HP) to 57 on last level of Swamp with monsters in view but it worked for the player.
I have DsFE with powered by death 2 mutation and demonic guardian 1 on D15 and I have just learned SoB, it should be much better than usual due to crazy regen and meat shield. Also I have Apocalypse in case something will go wrong.

(Didn't use spells like: deaths door etc.)
Main problem: subl. gave only minor mp very often (at my skill), so I used it a lot....it also was a long game ;)

Anything that was threatening (especially with ranged attacks) got my full attention.
Subl. of blood+regen is excellent while walking. Now you're regaining hp+mp.
CBlink away if you see something where you think your hp is insuff.
Felid still has a lot of stealth. Unless you want to cast loud spells you can choose your fights.
Standing somewhere casting loud spells using subl. of blood is certainly possible but too risky for my taste.
Did it but not very often.
