Should I unwield?

I'm wondering if my current character looks like he might survive a trip to the Abyss if I unwield this dagger of distortion I've had since D2... Not sure how to post an online character dump, but he's a L15 KoBe, with a ring of sustenance, evokable levitation, and a pair of Stlth++ boots, so I figure I can probably manage it. What do people think?

I've got a ring of levitation and an amulet of controlled flight, and a bunch of scrolls of blinking in my stash; does that improve my chances..? Bah, on second thoughts there was that guy recently who won whilst never unwielding his dagger of distortion, I might just try that ;-)

I'd go ahead and try it. There's only a chance you'll be banished. For some reason 12.5% chance comes to mind on the odds, but I have no clue where I got that number or how accurate it is, but banishment chances are not that high. And if you do get banished, just keep moving and run from anything that looks remotely threatening. If you take too much damage, shake whoever is chasing you, teleporting if needed and then go find a nice, quiet corner to rest in. That, of course, assumes you don't get very luck and have an exit near you when you get banished. After all, you're not going for the Abyssal rune, so you probably won't have to hang out there as long as someone who is.
The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.

If you do go to the Abyss, be sure to run from any nexoqecs or especially cacodemons you see, cause they'll mutate the hell out of you (one of the worse dangers of the Abyss). You DO have an amulet of resist mutation, but you're also currently wearing an amulet of faith, and for Berserkers, choosing between the two is not an enviable decision (especially when the faith amulet is already on).

If I were you, I'd wait until I found a ring of teleport first. (If you haven't seen one, check any cursed rings you might have thrown away without ID-ing them.) They make the Abyss much more survivable.

Last three times I've unwielded, no banishment.

Well, I was unwielding a +2/+3 battleaxe of freezing.

What were you guys unwielding?

I'd just go with unwielding it with a mutation amulet and all the scrolls and potions you can carry. Maybe you'll get lucky in the abyss and maybe you'll get lucky in your un-wield, but at some point you'll probably want to get rid of it, and you may as well do it now than further down the line

Just played a KoBe 4 Rune splat. I got banished by Louise twice. TWICE. but managed to survive. if you're stealthy you could get out of the abyss. Make sure you have some food though. Run from Neqoxecs and Cacos as mentioned above and you should be fine. Draconians too.

But if you can, save it for later.

This may come a bit late, but...

why didn't you unwield it immediately? If your character suffers a YASD after a few minutes, you can just make another one. But losing it at L15 because of a lack of weapon variability does hurt.

Unwielding a distortion weapon if you can possibly avoid it is an unnecessary risk if there's an alternative, but the example character is XL15 and still trying to use a suicide weapon in melee as their primary combat tool. The character is guaranteed to survive direct damage, teleportation, and status effects associated with distortion unwields, so the worst threats of unwielding are banishment and mutation-inducing heavy glow. If they don't kick in immediately, the character is safe. On the other hand, if the character continues to use the distortion dagger in melee eventually a big bruiser will get blinked behind them in a tunnel and they'll be unable to escape when they need to. Not to mention they're facing the late game without any access to rods, blowguns, or slings.

More useful loot would tilt the odds in the example character's favor, but there's no guarantee that this loot is going to come up. Until it does, using distortion to fight presents risks of its own.

Oh, yeah, sorry. I did miss that. Unwielding it immediately on D2 is only slightly more likely to be successful at correcting the problem than using the quit command immediately.

Well, the way I see it, there are two ways to play: Optimize wins per time or optimize wins per games. I am firmly in the former category and always thought that I'd share it with the majority (and given that a serious attempt may take 24 hours or more I still consider it the more sensible one). That's why I take a lot of risks in the early stages (The only early unique I run away from on principle is Grinder) and only become more careful in my approach when I try the first side branch.

Sounds like you don't pick Xom very often Silk :) Admittedly I am a crap noob who has only managed to get one rune in his entire crawl career, but sometimes its fun to not worry so much about optimal play. Wielding a dagger of distortion might not be terribly smart, as explained by KoboldLord, but it is pretty entertaining.

More lateness:
OP, my second trip to the Abyss ever was a level 10 KoBe with less gear than you have - I ran from everything, absolutely everything, whatever it was, wherever it was, I just ran and ran, and got reasonably lucky - got back to the dungeon without having made a single attack, and was only surrounded by 3 monsters, which I promptly doubled up on the BiA to kill off. So even if you get banished, death is not certain, just possible :)
