One reason why axes>swords?

One reason for this is that one of the best sources of 2 handed weapons of these types in a 3 rune game are frost/fire giants, who wield freezing battleaxes and flaming great swords respectively. Axe users are pretty much guaranteed a freezing battleaxe, while sword users have to use a flaming great sword. The freezing battleaxes are better, because orbs of fire only partially resist cold, while they completely resist fire.

Re: One reason why axes>swords?

no hard feelings, but you can post this here:
Give advice using the absolute worst reasoning possible :)

you can find an battleaxe or great sword way before you meet an frost/fire giant,
also knowing that those are wearing battleaxe/great sword should not affect your weapon decision

Dodging is bad, because it is based on luck. If you are unlucky, you will get hit over and over and die. Armour is better, as it gives some gdr.

Re: One reason why axes>swords?

Short blades are better than axes. One reason for this is that one of the best sources of short blades in a 3 rune game are spriggans mobs in the depths, who carry quick blades; you can then convert to Lugonu and get distortion brand on the fastest weapon in the game. Short blade users are pretty much guaranteed a distortion quick blade, while axe users have to use a freezing battleaxe. The distortion quick blades are better, because ancient liches do not resist distortion, while resisting cold.

Fortunately having good AC and good EV are not mutually exclusive.

FR add in old fire-vs-ice style antitraining for armor vs dodging and for fighting vs spellcasting to force everyone to play like new players.

Anti-training (for opposite elemental schools) has been removed in the 0.15,
before that you would get -4 aptitude for ice magic if you train fire magic and vice versa

...and I spent the last 6 months avoiding training both to avoid anti-training.
(I stopped playing some 3 years ago, maybe more, and got back on it only recently).

It still a bad idea to train both because they do the same thing, like training two different weapon skills.
Train something else
screw it I hate this character I'm gonna go melee Gastronok

Probably we should remove this no-brainer. It is boring not to waste any XP when switching body armour.

Train something else

On the other hand now that they don't have to be "opposites" we should add some fire+ice or air+fire spells like "steam blast" or "dust vortex".

I think PF was working on one of those recently actually-something Fire/Ice which exploded and left a water pool I think?

Re: One reason why axes>swords?

I am happy that antitraining has been removed. One of my Cj tried to trick the system: learned Fire/Ice spells and split XP between the two schools equally. I was expecting that antitraining does not trigger if I have exactly the same skill levels in Fire/Ice. That game taught me that XP-distribution is random in crawl :(
