Swamp is Only 4 Levels Deep - No Decaying Rune

Good morning!

I'm a relatively new DCSS player, using the standalone OSX application (not online, v0.18.1). I'm currently working with the most promising character I've ever had, and cleared out the 4th level of the Swamp, only to find that no 5th level exists! The ctrl-o screen says "Swamp (4/4)" as though it was only meant to have 4 floors; ?/B and 'Swamp' says the same thing: This branch is 4 levels deep. It also says that 'This branch contains the decaying rune of Zot' but it isn't there! Isn't this supposed to have 5 levels? And isn't the rune supposed to be on the 5th level?

Here is, perhaps, where my naiveté is exposed. Is there something special I'm supposed to do to find the 5th level and/or the rune?

If you fully explored the level and ^f does not show its location, then I would speculate that you picked it up without noticing.

Thanks for the quick response! I can verify that I do not have it. I've used ^f (I'm assuming that is ctrl-f) and searched for 'rune'. Nothing shows up except several runed armors and weapons. Any advice on what I should do next?

You can press "}" and see if you picked it up.

Thanks for the help all! Turns out goodcoolguy was correct: I'd already picked up! However it doesn't show in the inventory and that's what I didn't know. Fairly certain this is the first rune I've actually collected, so I didn't even know where it was!

Runes aren't inventory items; you can see them with the } key.

Don't bother remembering to use the bracket key imo, you can see a list of your runes on the # screen too.
