Recently cleared vaults 4, elf 2, got my 2 runes, and am getting ready for going through depths. I have the age-old problem of hexes petering out in usefulness and I'm not certain which direction I should take this char. I'd been hoping for a good book of earth for some killdudes but that hasn't come up.

My gut instinct is telling me to go summons (I could get Shadow Creatures, Simulacrum, Forest, Hydra, etc.) but I think then it would be more of a ninja-ing strategy and I'd prefer a bit more...breathing room. This would just be a 3-rune run.

You can (and probably should) post the text of those dumps between [code] tags. Also how do you get a floor item dump like that?

My goto on Ens toward the end of the game has always been orb of destruction, but looking at those dumps I don't think it's available to you. You do have a good selection of ice spells, and throw icicle is like a poor man's iron shot, that might be helpful to you.

Another suggestion is don't forget about hasting/mighting and just killing stuff with a weapon, you don't have to use spells after all. I assume there's a better short blade available for non-stabbing purposes.

Also, if it exists in your game, warp weapon would probably be a good spell for you. Distortion is a really good damage brand, not to mention you can banish stuff with it sometimes, so that's a good option for magic immune stuff.

Summoning is always a good option, looks like you're already doing that a bit.

Since you're a spriggan, your best way to deal with enemies you can't kill easily is just to walk away from them, that will work against a great majority of enemies.

Interesting...hadn't considered ice. Honestly, the wep I currently have on is pretty much the best one (I think). There's a +6 unbranded laying around, but I haven't come across a brand weapon scroll. I had a few early acq scrolls but I didn't get anything better than the current wep I have on.

Good point. I was mainly concerned with dealing with OoF/Toe/Lich towards the end...I guess since I'm only going for 3 this time around I don't necessarily need to clear a wide swath of room.

Oh I wasn't even thinking about ash's ability, I just thought he meant where to train from here.

Yeah, your 10 armor skill is probably worth 1 ac with what you're wearing, you could certainly trade that for some dodging or fighting or whatever, where you'll likely get better returns.

As far as the stuff in Zot, you can probably manage to avoid OOFs on Z1-Z4, usually only 1 or 2, if any oofs show up there, same deal with those other nasties really.

For Zot 5, clearing up to the lungs then (teleport roulette --> blink scrolls to the orb -->teleport scroll, grab orb, quaff healing or blink or something to survive a couple turns --> escape with the orb) is probably a pretty workable plan, if you don't manage to come up with a decent way to kill the stuff there. I see you only have 1 blink scroll at the moment, but you're a spriggan with haste so you could probably afford to run most of the way anyway.

I see your point about the post size limit, can you get your chardump into code tags, and leave the floor dump as a link? I only suggest it because I know some people (myself included) are just not very likely to click links to see a dump.

I thought this was the entire point of going Ash for a SpEn? Use hexes through depths and then trade it for something more useful late game?

Your hexes skill is barely enough to cast invisibility, which is extremely strong all game. The idea of hexes "falling off" in the "late game" is a myth with no basis in reality.

Eh, hexes are quite useful in zot as well, just not against everything. Just invisibility itself will kill pretty much every draconian enemy. Orb guardians have high MR, but they're not immune.

Hexes do run into a problem in late game, where the biggest threats (oofs) are magic immune, and very fast. Aliches are also immune, although they're not fast.

But having no way to kill the stuff between you and winning is certainly problematic, and calling that "falling off" might not be the most perfect way to put it, but it still gets the idea across. Invisibility isn't going to help you get the orb, and you need the orb to win.

I always like pointing out that I've died to draconians more often than orbs of fire. That may not be typical, but I doubt I'm the only person for whom that is true. Draconians are the dangerous pack enemies in Zot, hexes (including invis) take them out effectively, that is great.

Darkness can be very helpful. Silence almost completely neuters liches and ancient liches. If you double down on hexes and go all the way up to Discord, you can use non-immune dudes to kill immune dudes.

So I'd say hexes keep up fairly well, really, assuming (obviously) that you find the good hex spells and train for them.

The entire point of going Ash for every char including SpEn is enjoying free skill levels (although is not so important for a SpEn), monster detection and scrying. Especially the latter two are very good when you want to avoid dangerous monsters or stab them before they wake up or just know a vault layout and monsters inside before rushing to steal the rune\whatever.

edit: Btw about hexes falling off the late game: ensorcelled hibernation at high spellpower has 50% of chance to work against not purple|not white draconians.
A lv.2 spell that may easily instant kill a end game monster. Yes it is true.

Clearly from the context what I meant was that invisibility doesn't work against most of the monsters in the zot 5 lungs. But yes, invisibility will surely help you get to that point, just like I said, it basically lets you kill draconians for free. And then I guess if you're into it, you can die in the zot 5 lungs with the 'invis' status light on, if that floats your boat for whatever reason...

You can use invis to kill all the dracs, and use the xp from killing all the dracs to gain another way to deal with the hall of zot. Or invis to clear the rest of Z:5 so teleroulette is safer.

So what should Hexes be for a spen at end game? I figured you don't need more than 15ish unless you go discord. But even then is that enough?

the spellpower returns on spell skills are godawful so don't train spell skills for power generally

Main way to increase spell power is probably INT then? I thought the spell school was at least far better than spell casting. Getting invis down to a good cast rate isn't a huge sink with a SpEn.

The relevant part of the equation is of the form [skill bonus]*[int bonus], where [skill bonus] includes Spellcasting. It's not that skill is unimportant for power, it's that skill levels are expensive and by the time you have a spell at good success the power is usually high enough already that training skill to increase it is a bad investment.
The main exception is when you first start a background, you should definitely prioritize getting something like Freeze or Sandblast or Pain to max power by training only those spell school(s). But as the game goes on you get a bunch of stacked diminishing returns (higher skill levels are more expensive AND spell power has enormous stepdowns AND for lots of spells the impact of spell power on the spell's effect is worse than linear).
